The call to the Christian faith alone does not ensure salvation; what is decisive is that the baptized person lives in such a way as to keep the garment of baptism pure and to participate worthily in the Eucharist.
Let no one deceive himself into thinking that, because he is a Christian, he is already saved! That is nonsense and arrogance! To the Lord belongs judgment; to us, to keep the garment of our baptism pure and to keep it with us!
The homily interprets the parable of the wedding feast (Mt 22,1-14) as salvation history: God has been preparing the feast of the new covenant since creation, Israel rejects the invitation, and the Gentiles are called in their place. The preacher links the parable with the destruction of Jerusalem in the year 70 and with the Eucharist as the present feast. The festive garment is understood as baptism and as a life in keeping with the Gospel. The central admonition is that it is not the call alone that is decisive, but the faithful preservation of the garment of baptism. The text warns against the self-deception of being automatically saved as a Christian and calls for self-examination. The listeners are urged to participate worthily in the Eucharist and to reflect on their Christian life.

Ps 22
Phil 4,12-14.19-20
Mt 22,1-14
The Word of God from last Sunday spoke to us of the vineyard; the Word of God of this day speaks to us of a banquet! How many times in Sacred Scripture is the Kingdom of Heaven compared to a banquet! For the Orientals, the banquet, the feast around the table, is a sign of blessing, for it is the place of fellowship that gives joy to existence, of abundance that guarantees life, and of wine that gladdens the heart. That is why Jesus tells us today that “the Kingdom of Heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding feast for his son.” Now, most beloved brothers, this is what God has been doing since the creation of man: little by little, he has been preparing the wedding feast of his Son, Jesus our Lord, with humanity!
This is what the first reading of today deals with: already in the Old Testament, God spoke to Israel about the destiny of life, light, and peace that He was preparing for all humanity: “The Lord will give on this mountain, for all peoples, a banquet of rich delicacies, seasoned with pure wine, served with delicious dishes and the finest wines. He will remove, on this mountain, the end of the chain that bound all peoples. The Lord God will dominate death forever and will wipe away the tears from all faces…” Behold, most beloved, it is peace that is the thought of the Lord for us; it is life, freedom, happiness! If the Lord had chosen Israel as his people, it was so that they would be the minister of this salvation. Mount Zion would be the place from which salvation and the blessing of God would spring forth for all humanity. Unfortunately, Israel did not understand its mission. This is what Jesus explains to us in today’s parable (the third that deals with this issue: the first was that of the older brother who said he would do the father’s will but did not; the second was that of the murderous vine-growers, the third is that of today).
In the parable, the king is the Father; the wedding of the Son Jesus is the New Covenant that God wants to seal with all humanity; the servants are the prophets and the apostles. God prepared everything; in Jesus he made the invitation: “Come to the Feast!”, but Israel did not accept! The feast of welcoming the Messiah, the beloved Son, the One who brings life to all humanity! “The king was indignant and sent troops to kill those murderers and burn their city” – here Jesus refers to the burning of Jerusalem, the Holy City, which the Romans would carry out in the year 70, forty years after his death and resurrection. Behold! The invited guests did not want to participate in the feast, Israel rejected the invitation of the Messiah! What to do? The king orders the servants: “Go out to the crossroads of the roads and invite to the feast everyone you find.” And the hall was filled with guests.” We are the ones who were formerly pagans and did not know the God of Israel. Through the voice of the Apostles and the preachers of the Gospel, the Lord gathered us from all the peoples of the earth, from the crossroads of the roads of life, and made us his people, the new people, the Church! Thus, the hall of the banquet, the hall of the new and eternal covenant, was filled to the brim, because the desire of God is that all be saved!
Most beloved, we should never forget that the Church, of which we are members and children, and which we ourselves are, is the fruit of a design of love of the eternal Father who, in the fullness of time, called and gathered us in Christ Jesus! We should never forget that this Eucharistic Banquet in which we participate now is the Banquet that the King, the eternal Father, has prepared for us: Banquet of the covenant of his Son, the Bridegroom, with the Church, his Bride! Behold: we are the invited guests to the Banquet of the nuptials of the covenant of Christ with his beloved Bride… and the food, the Lamb, is Jesus himself given and received in communion! Let us think a little about the responsibility of being the People of God, of being the chosen ones to be the people of the Covenant…
Let us also listen to the end of the parable: “When the king came in to see the guests, he noticed there a man who was not wearing wedding garments!” Christian, invited to the Banquet of the Eucharist, Banquet of the Church, Banquet of the wedding of the Lamb, what is the wedding garment? It is the garment of your Baptism, that white garment, which you must keep pure throughout your life, by your works, by your conduct! Let it not happen that you are that man who entered the feast without the appropriate garment! That is what would happen if you came, that is what will happen if you come to this holy Eucharist with a life stained by actions contrary to what the Gospel of the Kingdom teaches you! “Friend, how did you come in here without wedding garments?” – behold, what a tremendous question the Lord asks us! What shall we answer him? “The man had nothing to say!” There is nothing to answer! Beloved, called, invited, why do we not strive to be worthy of such a King, of such a Son, of such a feast? “Then the king said to those who served: ‘Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness! There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth!’” Behold, dearest ones, our responsibility! The Lord gave us the gift of being Christians; he will decisively demand an accounting of what we do with our faith, with our life in Christ! Jesus himself warns us, very clearly, that “many are called, but few are chosen”... Let no one delude himself, thinking that because he is a Christian he is already saved! That is nonsense and arrogance! To the Lord belongs the judgment; to us, to keep pure and with us the garment of our Baptism!
Let us think carefully about how we are living our Christian life and, in a special way, our Eucharist! And may the Lord grant us the grace to participate worthily in the Banquet of the Lord, in this life, in the Masses we celebrate, and one day, for all Eternity! Amen.

Sl 22
Fl 4,12-14.19-20
Mt 22,1-14
Eis, caríssimos, a nossa responsabilidade!
