The petition for God's kingdom and will in the Lord's Prayer is not a distant projection into the future, but a present declaration of intent to let God's heavenly sovereignty and intimacy become effective in earthly reality.
These words, I believe, are meant to be a declaration of intent as to what we should be doing now. And so a new picture emerges from them: in heaven.
The text is a sermon on the phrase 'in heaven' in the Lord's Prayer, delivered by a guest preacher in an ICF congregation. The preacher uses everyday examples, such as the unexpected reunion with a colleague or the consecration of Oman's dishes, to illustrate the sovereignty and intimacy of God. He argues that the prayer is not a purely future-oriented petition, but a declaration of intent for the present reality, in which God's will is to be done on earth. Through the reference to Psalm 115, the Christian God is presented as the only living ruler in heaven, in contrast to dead idols. The sermon calls on the listeners to integrate their relationship with God beyond Sunday worship into everyday life and to actively support God's reign. It is emphasized that God, from his heavenly perspective, knows the future and can intervene, which creates hope beyond earthly circumstances. The text closes with an appeal to open the heart and experience the presence of God in the here and now.

Today is also something very special, and we have a guest preacher with us today, namely the one and only Jakob Adolf is in the house, friends! Jakob, I simply celebrated so much, and recently we were just at Jakob’s home grilling, and there were so many people, and I find it so admirable that Jakob has a quality that truly few people have. He has the gift and the quality of bringing people together who otherwise would never sit at the same table. I have spoken with people I otherwise would not have spoken with at all, but you have a gift for bringing people in, for drawing people in, for simply connecting them, and I find that so cool. And then, what I also find really cool is that at your home you have some kind of random stuff, but behind this random stuff there is always a special story. So if you should ever, for whatever reason, be at Jakob’s home and ask, why is there, I don’t know, an airplane or something, exactly, like? A wing, that is random, how random is that, friends? Yes, mega, it is a mega start. A wing, and it can truly tell you so many stories, where you thought, wow, everything here has a story, and I find that totally cool. You are so special and above all fascinating, your stories are always so interesting, and I am glad that you are with us today and have brought a heart message for us. For you friends, if your heart is not yet open, then I invite you now to use this moment to open your heart wide. We are going to look at our vision statement, vision clip, how we truly envision the church in the end. And afterwards I wish for you that we welcome Jakob with the applause of our lives. Can you do that, or? Okay, look, film start. We dream of a church in which Jesus Christ stands at the center. He kindles in it an incomparable passion, which unfolds in life-changing sermons, the power of worship, and overflowing creativity. In this church we celebrate and enjoy the relationship with our heavenly Father full of enthusiasm and learn to know him in all his facets ever more deeply. We wish for a church that is open to everyone, regardless of where people come from and what their story is. Here everyone finds a home. This church is a family characterized by unconditional love, cohesion, and serving leadership. The needs of society move them to merciful action. It is known for its generosity, looks and does not look away. We look forward to experiencing the power of God. We know that for God all things are possible. We expect the work of the Holy Spirit and experience his power. Our passion is for a church that gives its best for God, speaks the language of our time, and understands itself as part of the answer. In the church we dream of, many people come to faith in Jesus Christ and become ever more like him. While this church constantly grows, it simultaneously becomes ever more personal through small groups and thus has a positive influence on our families, friends, and society. May God fulfill this dream through all of us. What are you drinking? A few days ago I was with an American colleague in Barcelona, here below, in the evening for dinner. We had just sat down and then the waitress came. I almost fell out of my chair, because the waitress was another colleague from the office. We have an open-plan office and she sits way over on the left. I don’t know much about her, except that she writes texts. We don’t work together that closely. And she is incredibly funny. I hear her laughing across. So it’s relaxed, so 10 meters, 3 doors. I hear her laughing across the room. And suddenly she is standing there as a waitress.
I didn’t even realize that I know how to navigate a menu and can distinguish all the beverages. That was simply a new dimension for me. I didn’t know her like that before. You probably know that feeling too, when you’re standing in the supermarket. Suddenly, your dentist is standing in front of you. It’s a bit surreal. You don’t associate that person with this context at all. You can’t quite put it together. Or the auto mechanic is sitting at the hairdresser’s. He might not usually look like that, but on weekends he grooms himself. These are always those “aha” moments where we then think, “ah, they have to do grocery shopping too.” Even though these are people with whom we might have a relatively good relationship or whom we might know quite well, but always only from one environment and always in one context. And suddenly there is this additional dimension that was completely unknown to us. I’ll ask you a few questions. What would it mean for you if you could get to know God much more closely in the next seven days, until next Sunday? So, completely differently. What if you could hear what he is saying to you? And on the other side, what if everything remains as it is now? What if you don’t hear God, even though he is speaking to you? What if God remains in that one dimension in which you know him? Sunday mornings, perhaps during worship music. But then it’s over. A few months ago, I stood up here with my daughter Lea, and we told you about the Lord’s Prayer, the prayer that Jesus taught his disciples, and we didn’t get very far; we only reached “our.” And then the half hour was up. Today I want to continue speaking. And the text continues in heaven. “Hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” And actually, I only wanted to speak about “in heaven” today, until I then continued reading myself and then realized, “ah, the theme keeps coming back.” And then I said, “no, I have to take the entire passage.” My question to you is, how have you understood these words so far? “Hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done.” That sounds, and heaven, that sounds at first glance as if it were somehow in the future, right? But then again, well, he already has his name. That means, if we are to hallow his name, why not already now, because he already has the name, and we don’t have to wait until we are all in heaven someday. And if we then continue in the prayer, “give us this day our daily bread,” that would already be great if that refers to now and not to some indefinite future time. That means, suddenly we realize, “oh, this actually has a reference to reality.” It is formulated in such a way that we are to hallow his name now, that his kingdom is to come now, that his will is to be done now, just as in heaven, wherever that is, as here on earth. I believe these words are meant to be a declaration of intent regarding what we should do now. And from this, a new picture of “in heaven” emerges. The word appears twice in this very short text passage. Why does heaven appear at all? Well, I can only imagine it this way: because heaven is somewhere a different place where God lives, reigns, has always been true and will always be, and where hopefully we will also be someday. And heaven has different resources than we do here on earth, because that is the place where God is. It is a heavenly location. And God can see and do things from his perspective there. He can see the past, which he celebrates, but also the future. And he knows what we need here before we know it ourselves. In this regard, it is such that gods in general are usually not necessarily located in a heaven. Especially in traditional religions, gods are somehow associated with other things
knotted. I am often traveling in India, and there is very flat terrain east of Hyderabad. And there are not many hills there, but on the few hills that do exist, there stands a temple on each one. Because people think, well, if something rises up, it must somehow be a seat of a god. And so many religions know of gods residing in rivers, in mountains, in valleys, in elevations. And this was already noticed thousands of years ago. In Psalm 115 we read, yet their gods are only figures of silver and gold, made by human hands. They have a mouth, but they cannot speak. They have eyes, but they cannot see. With their ears they do not hear, and with their noses they do not smell. Their hands cannot grasp, with their feet they do not walk, and from their throats no single sound comes. And that is a reality. And whoever among you has already read the psalm before it, Psalm 3, which stands directly before it. But our God in heaven does what He wills. Therefore, heaven. Hope above the circumstances. Our problems are never too great for Him, such that He could not intervene with His resources. And no matter what happens, this God sits on the throne in heaven. The first statement of the Our Father is indeed this Our Father. And it is about the fact that this relationship is above all characterized by this strong intimacy. The second statement, which in heaven shows above all God’s sovereignty, because He is not bound here, but is everywhere and has His seat in heaven. In heaven, His perfect will is already taking place; what He desires happens. And we pray that this existence in this prayer, that this reality here on earth becomes visible. For the contemporaries of Jesus at that time, heaven was quasi God’s seat of government, the headquarters. That was where His authority resided. When one says “Father in heaven,” one acknowledges Him as the highest instance in the universe. Roughly, as if you go to the German embassy abroad and ask for your passport, and the ambassador says, we have some problem with Berlin. Then we know, he cannot decide that at all, he has a higher instance somewhere, and just our federal capital is enough, and then everyone already knows, oh, higher instance. The temple, by the way, in that time was the interface between this God in heaven, this higher instance, and our perishable existence here on earth. The temple in Jerusalem was the place where heaven and earth met. Heaven, the sphere in which God’s will has already perfectly taken place, in contrast to chaotic earth. Hallowed be your name. Holy means especially important. We all know that from Grandma. I always use this example, because it is such a deep example, when we go to Grandma for coffee and she takes her precious, most expensive dishware out of the cupboard. We all have to be very careful, we are not supposed to. And above all, Grandma herself drinks her coffee on Tuesday morning from the best cup in the world that you once gave her, and not from that dishware. So holy is that stuff. I currently have a project running in one of our company halls in Bottrop, where we produce from grass, i.e., hay, straw, not such a project, from grass, charcoal briquettes. And that is a surprisingly simple process, but because we are not yet doing it industrially, but first only testing how it can be applied later in Africa, later at the end of the month. How we can apply it in Africa, we have to look for a few aids, because we simply cannot produce these quantities. And as aids, we have looked at all possible tools that Amazon and the internet have to offer, and ended up with kitchen appliances. We have, without joking, an ice crusher, four air fryers, a sausage machine, and a few other small kitchen appliances.
to stand, with which we crush charcoal. That is truly unholy for kitchen appliances, okay? The whole hall gets filled with dust; we killed the sausage machine because we pumped a charcoal mixture with starch into it and checked whether the sausage machine could extrude our briquettes—it didn’t work. Absolutely unholy; you don’t do that. It doesn’t belong. Sometimes, when I imagine myself in different settings, I say “hot Jakob” and everyone goes, “Oh, a nice Jewish name, and quite popular,” and then I say “Adolf” and everyone goes, “Oh, not so nice anymore.” Somehow, none of us—not even I voluntarily—would choose it. It is so bad that there are now two films about it, the first name. Once the French version, very worth watching, and a Hollywood version of it, which is precisely about what is connected with this name and how this name ultimately became, in a way, a kind of swear word. And then I sometimes sit somewhere in a setting, and someone loudly calls out, “Oh God, oh God, oh my God,” in the US “Jesus Christ” and “God in heaven” and “oh my God.” It runs cold down my back, because I think, hey, for you, apparently something entirely different is connected with it than for me. And I know, some of us it hits right between the eyes. But we have, in a way, a different reference to who God is, what he can do, where he dwells, and what he means for me. In our church earlier, in youth, there were a few names that you were not allowed to say; you had to make a certain gesture if you had to say them, otherwise you’d get a slap. Imagine that were your name. Or imagine that some great mishap happens to you and you call out very loudly, because everyone does that. “Damn it” may mean nothing to you, but here sit two. One of them is my daughter; she means the world to me. And I know, hey, you will not know a “Leer,” at least not the way I know “Leer.” It seems not to mean much. Unholy. It is like the charcoal pieces in the ice crusher. Why should God’s name be hallowed? Well, by doing so, we assign him a status that he already has. He is not merely the God we perhaps know in some easy way, but he is the sovereign, almighty, merciful, just, one, and only-knowing God. He is that anyway, but with the hallowing of his name, we testify that we also believe that. Your kingdom come. Which kingdom would that be? Well, the one that already is in heaven, where he dwells, the one to which everything belongs. How does his kingdom come? Well, his kingdom always comes in the form of some presence. If we simply look back, earlier it was like this: when a king, for whatever reasons, waged a war, he would always occupy a land or a region, and that then became part of his kingdom. And for that, he himself did not even have to be present. It usually sufficed if his soldiers, his commanders, his ambassadors were present. And thereby it automatically became his kingdom, because they ultimately did exactly what the king had commanded them to do. By the way, that is exactly like when we say, “We have become world champions,” “Germany has become world champion.” That is only conditionally true, because usually it is somehow only 11 or 6 or 7 people who have become champions. And we simply count ourselves in, because we have the same nationality. How can God’s kingdom come? Of course, through God’s presence. But also through us, his disciples, ambassadors, his team. Your will be done. That comes relatively easily to my lips. But one must say, it is incredibly difficult for me to know God’s will. Why? First, I have enough of my own will, and I am surrounded by people who also have not just one will, but thousands of different
to have a will. And some of them pay me to carry out their will. And then there are these expectations from others that, as a favor, I fulfill their will. And one can imagine that it is not quite so simple to still figure out what God additionally wants. And I want to make it a little easier for you. The question is, what does the Father in Heaven want? Well, a few things are logical. Pure common sense, we can figure out what God wants. That it goes well for everyone, blah, blah, blah. But most of it, or much of what God wants, is in such a book. I have not had any book other than the Bible for almost 30 years, so only the Bible. So it is here, so while I use the Bible. One can find out, if one spends time with it and looks into it. And at the very end, the question remains, well, is this or that really his will? Or not? Well, good, we can of course ask. And a great example for me is Gideon from the Old Testament. I have already told about Gideon, later in his life. But at this point, Gideon is a relatively simple man. And God calls him, speaks to him and says, there are enemies and you Israelites should fight against them. That is fine so far. And God says to him, I want you to do that. And Gideon has the task to gather all the able-bodied men from his people. And the others are, of course, professional armies. Not only are they significantly outnumbered. No, Gideon’s people, they are all shepherds and carpenters and probably interior decorators or something like that. And you can perhaps imagine, when Gideon then sees his band sitting there, that certain doubts come to him whether this will go well. The story intensifies enormously afterwards. But we are in the initial stage of this story and he sits there and asks himself, oh my goodness, is this really God’s will, that I should do this action here with them. And he prays to God and says, please give me a sign that you really want to deliver Israel through me, as you have announced. There is already a bit of worry and fear involved, isn’t there? And then to ensure, he says, God, I will lay out a fleece here, in the evening and in the morning please dew on the fleece, everything around should please be dry. Then I will know that you have this in mind with me. And the next morning everything is dry and he spreads out the fleece and there is water in it. And he thinks to himself, oh, no. And then he says, okay, do not be angry with me, one more time. Now the next morning the fleece should be dry and everything else should be wet. And that happens. And he says, okay, I will probably do it. At the end of the year I am a lot on YouTube, so not as a creator, no worries, a lot on YouTube. And there I came across Jamie Winship and his wife. A former CIA agent, who was always sent by the government, you know which one, somewhere to crisis areas, if it threatened that some group of Islamists somehow gathered, then he was sent as a mediator into this situation. An incredibly exciting life story, I can only recommend, feel free to google him. And he and his wife say that they have always lived their lives in such a way that whenever something happens that is a bit strange, they immediately said, God, what do you want to convey to us there? No matter what happened, whether it was good, whether it was bad, whenever something ran a bit differently than usual, that was their first question. Not why, me or so. They always said, Lord, show us what you want to say with it. And we know, God speaks through burning bushes, through donkeys, voices in the night, dreams, storms and from clouds. And that is also what we wish. And we wish
all, that God speaks to us very clearly, preferably with such speakers, very clearly in a megaphone-like manner, so that it is truly unmistakable, or perhaps a note under the door, so that we are all excellent. My experience is not like that. Mine is always very quiet, extremely quiet. Why? No idea. A few years ago, we were sitting around the table with friends, and one friend told us that when she was five or six or seven or so years old, they had a Christmas dinner in the family, a huge family table, and at some point she set up her huge video camera and filmed the entire evening, the whole dinner. And somehow later, no idea when, someone from the family sat down and watched the whole evening again. And then noticed that the little girl was sitting at the table while everyone was discussing and there was great atmosphere and everything, and she kept saying, could I please have a little more meat. All evening long. She didn’t get it until the end. Very quietly. She was clearly understandable. No one noticed. Sometimes God speaks very, very quietly. I find that both embarrassing and funny and uncomfortable at the same time. Then I want it to be on earth as it is in heaven. Just because you have, until now, until today, placed God in some dimension, in some place, perhaps here in this backyard or on Sunday, just because you have limited and restricted him to some area of life, that does not at all mean that he is that. I have a video about that. Many of us have limited God to baptism, wedding, and funeral. And occasionally a few other events in life, among the Evangelicals, in

Was trinkst du? Also sind locker, also 10 Meter, 3 Türen. Also ganz anders. Was wäre, wenn du hören könntest, was er dir sagt? Deswegen Himmel. Dein Reich komme. Also steht hier, also während ich die Bibel nutze.
