Parashat Nitzavim || From the Prince to the Water-Drafter

Community · main message Justice · carrying Responsibility · carrying

The covenant with God encompasses all members of the community, regardless of their social status, and requires a shared responsibility for the future and the cohesion of the people.

You all stand before the Lord your God. Then it is listed who that is, and then the leaders of course first, the politicians and the princes and the officers. But then also the small people... from your woodcutter to your water-drafter.

The text analyzes Parashat Nitzavim (Deuteronomy 29), which gathers all members of the people of Israel, from the princes to the water-drafter, before God. The speaker emphasizes the democratic dimension of this enumeration and the inclusion of strangers and servants in the covenant. He connects this with the current experience of distance and the desire for physical community, particularly in the context of the pandemic. The grammatical shift from the plural to the singular is interpreted as a reference to personal responsibility and the continuity of the covenant across generations. The text concludes with a warning against falling away from the covenant and the danger that poison and bitterness may take root within the community. It calls for nurturing the shared identity as the people of God and taking responsibility for one another.

I am glad to address our viewers again and ask for your understanding that we are ten minutes late today. However, this is because our Chief Rabbi of Thuringia from Erfurt is ill. We naturally wish him a speedy recovery and send him our warmest greetings, should he be watching or watching the recording. I am very grateful that Rabbi Walter Rothschild from Berlin agreed at short notice, saying, “Okay, we will not cancel.” I am all the more pleased, as he is just returning from a trip to us in Thuringia. I therefore cordially invite you: on Sunday he will be in Eisenach for the opening of the Acha-Wa-Fest-Spiele from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., together with me in the Tent of Encounter. And regarding what we are doing now in dialogue, we will then have six hours. I cordially invite you, especially those from Thuringia, to come to Eisenach. Above all, at 6 p.m. you will be able to experience Rabbi Rothschild as a biting rabbi. For then he will perform his cabaret program, “Beware of the Biting Rabbi,” in the festival tent of the Acha-Wa-Fest-Spiele. The whole thing is easily found on Lutherplatz, next to the museum and next to the Georgenkirche. And perhaps we will also meet each other personally. So, Walter, it is good that you have come to speak about Nitzavim. You all stand today before God. And that is, first of all, an incredible democratic parashah that we have here. It begins, so, Nitzavim. You all stand before the Lord, your God. Then it is enumerated who that is, and naturally the superiors first, the politicians and the princes and the officers. But then also the common people; the Torah says, the small folk and your sojourners, both of them, that is, the foreigners, and then from your woodcutter to your water-drawer. So all of Israel from top to bottom. That is wonderful, Walter, isn’t it? It should be so, it should be so. By the way, yes, I apologize personally again. It is always interesting, every time, that the backup does not try to simply put something into the laptop, and if something does not work. I do not understand why. I can only say that my children laugh at me when it comes to computers. And three days ago my younger daughter tried to help me with something, to do something. I had to save something and send it and so on. And in the end she was so frustrated. What is wrong with your computer, Papa? Everything with your computer is always difficult. So, I am currently using my daughter’s laptop and not my own. And at least we can see each other. And that is interesting, because here it says, “Nitzavim, to whom.” Here we are all together, and ten minutes ago, we were not at all together, only because of the technology. And that is also an interesting problem for the last few months. To what extent has one this feeling of being together, in a time when we do everything via, here is a ClickMeeting, or WebEx, or Zoom, or Skype, in which we are only somehow in connection through screens. This has really become a great psychological problem for many people now, a virtual problem, this lack of physical, physical togetherness, simply being together in a room, being in a divine service, being in a celebration. Of course, some people take that a bit more lightly. And now there is always a lot of talk about where and when and how one should wear a mask, and whether that will really help, and so on and so forth. But where is this feeling? Nitzavim, to whom, here we have all of you. So, Rickle, you have already very nicely felt what you have said, but I would repeat it here. Nitzavim, to whom, here we have all of you, that is the whole people, that addresses the people. They all stand today before the Eternal. Interesting, Nitzavim means, they are present. They are located here now, approximately. They are located here now, here. All of you, in the presence of Adonai, your God’s. Rashichem, the chiefs, the VSIP, very self-important people. We know the term VIP, but no person is truly so important. Even if they think they have earned a limousine and a better hotel suite. Shiftichem, that is the tribes, the tribes as such, the Zitnehem, the elders. Back then, people thought that as one grows older, one also becomes wiser. Not everyone achieves that, I must sadly say, but yes, if one has survived several catastrophes, has gathered more life experience, then one could say so. Shiftichem is sometimes also the modern big word, the police officers, the watchmen, the garden. Kulisch Israel, all men. This is interesting, because there are all these men plus under all men. But then comes Tabchem, the little children. Nuschichem, the women. The children come before the women. One sometimes says, women and children first, but here the children come before the women. Begercha, asher, bekerr, machanercha. This is interesting. The stranger who is located in the midst of your situation. Not only them, but also others who, one could say, are completely guided, also the one, as any fate, with you just now. Mechothefeitzeche, asho eich mei meche. The one who gathers or cuts wood is the water carrier. Interestingly, in many tribes, now in the third world, it is the women who are always made to fetch water, running kilometers to get a little water in a crock from the wells. Lavraka bis mit Adonai al-Achecha, to enter into the covenant with Adonai, your God. And here suddenly, from one verse to the next, Entities, from nine to ten Entities, from plural to singular. Your God. And in this relationship, this covenant, which God has sworn with you, you, singular, today. There is the question in the comments as well, whether "you" means you individually or you the people, i.e., a common singular, is also grammatically possible. But I find it interesting, not to mention despite the. Leman hakim idotra hayyom lo leam, so that he, he is indeed the people mentioned as a group, that you as a people become his people. Now? I mean, at this point they have already been in the wilderness for 40 years. And how can it be that they must decide just now whether they can or should do it right. So, what else is there? Heireitimch haiö endman hakimotra leam fitting. Huya hilach leel infinity. KaÖ tabsch ade Bellach. KaÖ săn ishto, labetechha, labraham litethicak li Dragons You will be his people, he will be a God to you, just as he promised to your forefather, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Where is the stranger in this combination? The stranger, the servant, what can one say? The person who does bone-breaking labor in the camp, fetches water and fetches for the firewood. These are not the intellectuals, these are the manual workers, the servants perhaps enslaved, because I know exactly to what extent, but they also belong. They also enter into this covenant, otherwise they would not be mentioned. It does not say here, they, the Israelites, they enter into the covenant and the others stay at home, stay in the tents. I find this interesting. Not only you are bound to this covenant and this oath, but also, besides the one who stands here today with us, with our eternal God, also the one who is not here with us today. Here is the Lord in the presence, with Hayyom, the Fnähtin, the Hainu, and here is the Lord in the presence, and here is our God, the Hainu, these small, grammatical things can have such importance. Whether a word comes before another, or in the plural, or singular, or however else. And also those who are not here are here. How can that be? What is the point of being here, if one is also included, even if one is not here? It sounds a bit strange. So the Rabbis understand this as those who have not yet been born, in the future. We, now. Back then, back then in the wilderness, or actually, they are already, Outside the Wustesinae, who are already in the land of Moab, who are just ready to cross the North Rhine river, to come into the land. This is almost the penultimate Citra of the Toraus. Just as they are ready to come into the land, they are also to enter into a covenant with God. Also those who are not there. I see here a very important concept, already Continuity. Of course, Moshe is now speaking mainly to the next generation, the children, from whom the Außengebungen have come. These people perhaps had less knowledge of the Patriarchs, of Avramidsaken, which also buys. They had less concept of the besprochenes Land, of covenant and so on. So now, before they leave the Wanderung, this life phase, they are to enter into this covenant, before they come into the land. As we know, when they come into the land, they must then also set up two large stones, that was the last Wochenabstieg, in Schemm, the Eberl and so on. And then they are to write words, and everything is to be remembered. This must carefully not be forgotten. But here is an Andertone-Art somehow. Moses is still desperate. There is always the risk in Tewtchnobium that one repeats oneself always. Because he repeats himself always. The whole book, he repeats himself and repeats himself out of fear. Out of fear that he would forget after his passing. But here, so that we together with our God drill, that is an Andertone-Art. And also those who are not here with us. This is no confrontation, Moses against the people. This often occurs in Tewtchnobium. But here, not so here. Here it seems to be, a commonality, an important commonality, a shared fate. They are a fate of community. These people, with whom Moses speaks, did not personally choose to go into the Wuste. Their parents did not want it either, if we read it correctly. They also had Riesenpanik. They did not want to go through the Schuls anymore, but they made it. And now, now comes the time, Moses must step back. How do they continue? With which jointly connected identity? And the answer is, they go there as Volk-Gottes into the land. God wants to be their Volk Gott and they will become his Volk. One can of course argue, all people are God’s Volk. That is also true. That is part of the contradiction. We are frequently confronted with this contradiction, also in the Schmar. There are Echoes of the Schmar in this Sidra. The Düsseldorf God loves with whole heart and whole Sehmer. If we say in the Schmar, that is the Dutinium chapter 6. Hear Israel, has our God, has the newest Einzige God. That sounds a bit contradictory, so to speak. If God is the Einzige God, then of course he is our God. Or if he is our God, then, how shall one say, is he the Einzige. Where then for other people? There is really, here I have seen it, a contradiction. But if we have arrived at this point, from Moses almost ready is, to die, these are not quite his Famous Rust Worlds, but they are quite close to it. One notices, a certain resignation perhaps or an attempt, something with the people to share, so that they internalize it more positively in themselves. But after that comes a warning. What happens, if it does not go so? What happens, if you deviate, if you do not take this covenant and then it becomes problematic? It could be, we are now at verse 18 of chapter 90. Maybe just a little earlier at verse 17. It could now be one among you, a man or a woman, a family or a tribe. So man, woman, family, everything is possible. Whose heart turns away today from the Medikamente and the God. Goes away, and then another Volk is served. It could be among you a Wörter is, poison and Wehrmutters fruit bears. These are an interesting metaphor. Among you grows something into the ground. It could bear a fruit that is truly negative and destructive. And it could be that, when he hears this curse word, he will bless himself in his heart and speak, ah, ah, ah, it will go well with me if I am unbridled, is my second walk. That is what one does with such a curse. The answer actually is, it is done by no one; God does it. The Eternal will not forgive him, but the wrath of the Eternal will be kindled against the man in vengeance. And but the curse words that are written in this book will rest upon him, and the Eternal will erase his name from the world. So the curses are already mentioned earlier, and they occur frequently, and you do not do them anymore. There is always the choice, good and evil, life and death, blessing and curse. If one has earned the curse, then one comes to the curse. It sounds so simple. I no longer believe it is so simple. And certainly not so simple when my Robine tries to comfort people who grieve, who have lost someone. We are today, if one has not forgotten, September 11, yes, 2020, but not so many years ago there was a huge violent destruction and loss in our world, the beginning of yet another long war. One could truly not say in his family, well, your father, uncle, grandfather, brother, husband, deserved it. Because in other voices the office, buildings, work, etc. It does not work. One cannot simply act in black and white. From Robine one must always seek other concepts, other comforts, other problems. Nevertheless, here it stands relatively clearly that there is a great perspective: if they have earned it, they will be destroyed, annihilated. The land shall then be desolated, with sulfur and salt, to the cities of springs. It will be the destroyed Adman, the trees, Sodom and desolated alike, which the Eternal has destroyed in his wrathful fury. I personally do not find these beings very beautiful, of course. I personally have huge problems with a God who can always become so wrathful, so quickly, always with his wrath so... What can one say? Violent, destructive is. He cannot give a second chance, he cannot open dialogue. Here is the warning, one perceives the warning. If not, too late, what do you define about that? The books, the texts, have been before our noses for thousands of years, and we know what is written there now. It will be so bad, says Moses, that other peoples will be able to say, what is going on here? What has this people done that they deserve this? Why has the Eternal done this to this land? Why this great fiery wrath? The answer is, they have left the covenant. We have here in modern times, not only in modern times, many people who have left the covenant with God, but many people who think, we no longer need God. I can provide for myself everything. I am doing well. I am okay. In English one says, I'm alright, Jack. Why does one need this old-fashioned religion? Why does one need this old concept, that is so kingly and so on? So we know people, we know this situation. We know a society that has actually become secular, where the churches stand empty, where the synagogues stand empty. Where many people seek something, perhaps, but not necessarily God. They seek a spirituality, they seek a kabbalistic mystery. They seek something with autohedonic, all kinds of things. People are always on the search. Secular people, even more than others sometimes, they seek and seek, those who have not found it, believing people will think, at least I have found something. But one cannot say that all who are secular, they are automatically killed by God, annihilated, destroyed. It is even good so. One would like to have a region in which people are only borrowed out of fear. I must regularly appear in church, otherwise God will... Puh, bam, bum, bum, bum. It was full So, we know that. It was sometimes the situation that if one did not regularly appear in church, then one had problems with the U-righteousness. I know the situation in England in the 19th century. There were in many large industrial cities, which were really administered by only one Company-society, let us say a railway company, if one did not regularly appear, there were problems. In the department of his people, where were they on Sunday, Mr. Schwot? I do not want such a region either. The people should be free, to choose voluntarily, to decide, to come into this covenant. Here we stand, let us tell ourselves. Everyone, listen up. Men, women, children. Important people and small people. The U-righteous and even the foreigners who do all the bone work. Please, please, please, let us tell ourselves, choose that. That will become clear in the next chapter. I must not speak too long, today, one can, in the deception of the Nuremigen, what to talk about. We have, I have previously laid, Kohladre with everyone, I also still have a Klapp, on a Tatjille to interrogate, what I wanted, or what I also still have, what I would have, what I would have, what I would have. The time comes, lying empty. All these words, which I have presented, which it takes to heart, if you know under all the peoples, under whom the eternal your God has banished you. So also, if you live among other people, other peoples, of the legions, also of the culture, please remember your own identity, please remember this conversation, this covenant. That is also interesting, the people have not yet arrived in the land, the people are soon to come into the land under Joshua. And already now, says Moses, do not forget it either, if you are no longer in this land, if you are under banishment, and punished by God. That does not mean that there is no God, it only means that there is a God in whom one can still believe. And he says later, I lay before you, life and death, please take the right decision. Man is free, man is free, to make his own decisions. Man is free, to come into a covenant with God or not. That is the great difference. We are free to decide, but we then take the responsibility for the consequences, if we make the wrong decision. Perhaps I should now conclude the reference there. And you certainly have questions, other people too. It is an interesting text, not always simple, not always very positive, not always very friendly, but an important text, almost at the end of Moses' career and the end of his long speech. Already? Ah, I see you again now. Thank you very much. Now I see everything better. A pity that we cannot see everything, but perhaps yes on Sunday still. I believe, to agree with what you said, perhaps in our Zidra there is also a key. You have also pointed out, secular people search and search perhaps in the hidden, in the Heimnisse, in the Kapala and on the other hand there are also far too many interpretations, where the wrath of God is. There is hatred-vershalom, Farrer and also perhaps Rabina, who say, it is the wrath of God, which now comes over us in the pandemic. Or it is the wrath of God, which 9.11. today 2001, on this day 2001 has come over the people. It is still 2009, verse 28. After every car accident there is one, in which one has been asked, one should check his knives and so on. And perhaps there is a verse, which makes the whole thing even simpler, verse 28 of chapter 29. The secret is with him and his God translated. Buba, that. And the open is with us. And he then to sons and daughters, for world-time, namely all words of this instruction to do. There it says, the key is, perhaps very simply, not to get lost in that, but, that is almost the closing word of Moose, this To simply do the words. This is reinforced again in chapter 30, where we translated: "The commandment that I give you today is not beyond you, nor is it far away, not in heaven, so that you would say, 'Who will ascend for us to heaven and bring it down to us, that we may hear it and do it?' Nor is it across the sea, so that you would say, 'Who will cross the sea for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?' No, the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, to do it." And perhaps another little point about the covenant. I wanted to say, the quoting Brubobesetzung is, of course, beautiful German, better than my German, but the hybrid texts of, what you mentioned, we say 28, interestingly there is a tradition, no one knows the exact origin of it, small dots over the two words, Lanu, Oliver, Neynu, who to us and to our children. There are several, sometimes bizarre traditions, when one writes a Safe-Toura, that is, makes it by hand, where certain letters should be longer or larger or th

Das geht los, also Nizza Wien. Rashichem, die Chiefs, the VSIP, very self-important people. Man sagt manchmal, women and children first, aber hier kommen die children before the women. Begercha, asher, bekerr, machanercha. Huya hilach leel infinity. Also Mann, Frau, Familie, alles ist möglich. Was kann man sagen? In Englisch sagt man, I'm alright, Jack.
