The apparent split between soul and being is an illusion; reality consists of the constant flow of cause and effect, which is experienced through mindful awareness and the integration of inner parts.

When you understand what reality is, you will notice that we shed one shell after another. Like a traveler who spends each night somewhere else.

The text analyzes the Zen kōan 'Sejo's Soul Is Separated from Her Being' from the Mumonkan. It uses the story of Sejo, whose consciousness detaches from her physical body, as a metaphor for the split between the adapted, functioning ego and the authentic, rebellious self. The speaker argues that in Buddhism reality is understood as constant becoming without fixed essence, which renders the question of a 'true' soul obsolete. By way of the example of the missing biologist Roland and a shy seminarian, he illustrates how inner parts can become separated from outer life. Healing is described as a process of integrating these separated parts through empathic listening and the letting go of illusions. The text calls for perceiving one's own reality in the here and now, rather than remaining in separated identities.

Sen, the podcast of Chukka Sangha. Iho san si si si va si sunbu sam ko sa ko ja ho romi. So, today I would like to speak about Case 35 from the Mumonkan. There are two major collections of cases, the Mumonkan and the Hekiganroku, which together contain approximately 150 cases. And frequently we take one of these cases as a starting point for some discussions, in the hope that it might be helpful in some way. Well, I have that hope now as well, but one only knows at the end. This case is called "Sejo’s Soul Is Separated." And it says: Gosho said to his monks, “Sejo’s soul is separated from her being. What is the true Sejo?” And Gosho is a famous Zen master who was contemporary. He was the teacher of Engo. And Engo compiled most of these cases, at least in the Hekiganroku. And here, too, Gosho is quoted. So, Mumon comments on this statement by Gosho as follows: If you understand what reality is, you will notice that we shed one shell after another. Like a traveler who spends each night in a different place. But if you do not yet understand this, then I mean it seriously: you should not rush ahead too quickly. If earth, water, fire, and air are suddenly separated from one another, you will be like a crab flailing its seven or eight arms and legs in boiling water. If that happens to you, do not say, “I did not warn you.” And his poem: The moon above the clouds is always the same. Valleys and mountains are separated from one another; all are blessed, whether they are one or whether they are two? Gosho refers to an old Chinese ghost story. In this story, it is reported that Sejo, the girl, was betrothed as a baby to her cousin Otcho. And when she had grown up, her father suddenly wanted to marry her to another young man. Upon this, Otcho, upset, left home and traveled up the Yangtze River by boat. At midnight, someone ran along the shore and called Otcho’s name urgently. It was Sejo; they then traveled together into the distance, lived there together, and had two children. After five years, she became homesick. They wanted to see their parents again. So they decided to revisit their birthplace. When they had come down the river, Otcho left Sejo in the boat and went alone to her father to apologize for their running away together. But to his great astonishment, he was told that Sejo had been lying unconscious in bed since the time he had run away from home. Then there were two Sejos: one in the boat and another sick in bed. But when the Sejo from the boat entered the house, the other simultaneously rose from her bed. They met on the staircase and merged into one Sejo. Since then, the question has arisen: which was the true Sejo? Yes, and Mumon says that this is a question of the realization of reality. In Buddhism, reality is a very serious topic. It is always about being in connection with what is functioning. Not with the ideas about what is functioning, and not with any consequences about what is functioning, but directly with what is functioning. When one looks at what is functioning, one must conclude that there is no constant, fixed reference point to which one can refer, but that everything, including people, is merely being driven within causal connections. There is nothing permanent, no unity, nor any unity that could be called a soul. Everything constantly changes in the stream of cause and effect. What has happened is indeed alive here. But when it is over, it is over. Moment by moment, it flows past. In the face of this arising and passing away, there is nothing else real. The forms of manifestation themselves are reality. If you So, if you ask what truly is, you are actually already wrong. Reality actualizes itself precisely in this play of causes, and you can perceive it in your Samadhi. So, if you become completely one with the Here and Now and with what is in this very moment, then you have contact with reality. Yes, and an important topic regarding reality is that, alongside the external appearances and processes, there is naturally also the inner side of reality. There is always also an inner side of that which acts. And these two areas of experience, which we can call authenticity and reality, sometimes separate. That is to say, our inner side of the experience of truth or the experience of reality splits off for some reason from the reality of causal connections, from what is. And this is apparently what happened with Sejo, whose soul has become separated from her being. So, on one side she lies in bed, and on the other side she is having children. Where is the inner experience of authenticity of these two sides of Sejo? Of course, it happens to us in the same way that our true being separates from our imagined being and our projected being. And again and again we struggle to bring all of this together and to make it into a consistent area of experience internally. We had in our community, you know that I come from a life community, and in this life community many people come and go. And we had there a person, Roland, a biologist, a scientist, who had deeply engaged himself in various projects of the Life Garden. He was involved with the construction of the neighboring greenhouse. He was involved with research reports about it. He was very familiar with permaculture and had many ideas about which plants might thrive well with us, and so on and so forth. He had many projects running and he had a very perceptible voice in the community. And he was friends with a woman within our community. And one day he had disappeared. Overnight, his VW bus was gone. He had not left a word with his girlfriend, no message. And he gave the appearance of having died. His VW bus was found in the water of a river beneath a bridge. His body was not found, but the general opinion was that the man was dead. It was, of course, a sad news for us in the Life Garden. There were people who tried once more to find him somewhere. But that was fruitless. Peter, it was said, lives with a woman and children in southern France. Apparently, his soul had separated from his being. What he was with us, he was no longer. He was a father in southern France of two children and had a partner there. One could not even address him. It was just that someone had seen him there. That was all. And I often asked myself back then, what was truly real in Roland? What was true? What was his true nature? What was driving him? With us, he was a cheerful, energetic person. That is how his girlfriend had also met him, and then suddenly gone. Without a sign. As if he had flipped an inner switch. So we all had no explanation for a long time. Yes, and that is, of course, now extreme. But we all somehow know the situation that certain parts of us do not appear to be truly integrated. Or they torment us, without us knowing the reason for it. And another young man, who had taken part in a seminar part on healing relationships, lived in a world where he always shamed himself. He shamed himself for existing at all. And although it was clear to him that this was simply just thoughts of his, which were running around in his head, and that there was no reason for his shame, it nevertheless kept appearing again and again without reason, without him being able to defend himself against it. For example, in a conversation with his school principal and so on. And in this seminar on Healing of Relationship, there was a miraculous opening of this young man and a wonderful transformation. Namely, when empathy was given to his deep pain, which he had experienced as a baby in the hospital. He had been left alone as a baby in the hospital and had screamed and screamed and screamed and screamed, and neither his mother nor his father came. And when he experienced, through empathic listening, that Avalokiteshvara was the same, space-giving listening, that he was welcome and that there was security for him and deep acceptance, he burst into loud laughter and subsequently never spoke of his shame again. Somehow it had fallen off him. For me, still a miracle, a miracle triggered by empathic listening. Yes, so, this Sejo, this girl who was promised to a cousin as his fiancée already after birth, lived in a world where she was totally determined by others as a woman. And it belonged to her fate that either she conformed or she escaped, fled. And this was a revolutionary story for Chinese conditions, that Sejo, after her father said, with the Oddschulers we are now done, I have an important business friend here with whom we will now marry her, did not go along with it. But she lived in such a context that did not actually give her the room to resist it. Above all, it was clear to the young Chinese woman that what the heads of the families determine, she must implement. And Sejo did not do that, but she did not do that. And this is in the hand of the Wise, when the father announced it, she fell ill into bed, into a coma. And I find this image so meaningful, because it shows that this world of functioning is a world of coma, where we simply follow certain rules and adapt and become weak. Like Sejo, lying there in bed, can no longer move. And interestingly, there is just this other Sejo there. There is this functioning Sejo, who almost dies. And there is this rebellious Sejo, who sets aside the will of the father, drifts to the shore of the Jankzerent with her Otschuh and travels with it. For five years, she brings back two children. So, a completely different being is expressed in her. Of course, one asks oneself from the outside, who is the true Sejo now, the one lying in bed or the one who has had children, how can that go together? And so it is also with us sometimes, we cannot be with what our movers want to set in motion. We cannot stand up for our needs. We are inhibited. And then we are like Sejo in a coma. Then we can no longer advocate for life. But if we simply run away, as I for example also did as a young man, I separated myself from my parental home, plunged into the student movement, was against everything I had previously experienced in my life, at home, boarding school education, English, Feineart, I left everything behind me. And I felt very comfortable with that. I liked my rebelliousness, but I noticed long-term that something must still heal in me. And it took a long time until I really allowed myself to admit that it is also about making peace with my father, for example. When I left, he still wrote a letter after me. I hope you have not become a victim of the red injection. That was his diagnosis towards me. And after that, our contact was broken off. And it took a very long time that, strengthened by my new experiences and my own life path that I had taken, I could finally invite him to come into my world. At the taking of refuge of my children, Janis and Miriam, he came into the life garden and for the first time with confronted with my Buddhist identity. I sat there in my robe and questioned the children about the Buddha’s teaching, and they answered obediently. And he sat in the front row and listened to and watched all of it. And afterwards he said, I understand, I now understand more about your life. And afterwards I was able to say, I now also understand more about your life. Finally, I was able to thank my father. I could see that, although he seemed to have no contact whatsoever with his feelings, many of us have experienced this with their parents. We sat alone with our feelings and were not accepted for them. We were demanded to function. That was praised, that was emphasized. But what was actually going on inside us did not come forward. I still remember that, as a 14-year-old or 13-year-old, on a trip to school... My father often had to drive me to school, because we were in such a summer house in the countryside during the summer. And he had to go to work, in the town where I went to school. And we drove in silence side by side as usual, these 50 kilometers, occasionally reaching for his car phone or writing some notes on the paper. And it was boiling inside me. And then I said to him, don’t you wonder that I cannot trust you at all. No word was said about it, it was not addressed. Yes, and later, in later years, I was able to tell him, I have seen your life. And I thank you for having freed me from a hellish dilemma at home by putting me in a boarding school. And I thank you for having ensured that I could learn foreign languages at an early age. That you put me in foreign families in Europe, that you sent me there. That was a great joy and a great step in my development to be with people of other cultures at the age of 15 to 17, 18. And I would like to thank you for having become a strong branch on the trunk of your tree. And I wrote that to him. I thanked him, he still spoke of war experiences that had shaped him. But overall, we came into a reconciliatory contact. And I felt that these two sides of me, as with C.E. Joe, on the stairs, came together again. I could accept him as my father. I could deal with his own life story in peace. And I could be the one I had become and present myself to him with that, and could notice the shine in his eye. Yes, so, how do we get out of this split experienced as a dilemma? Momen says, by finding our true self. But how can we, if we are in this strange coma of functioning, how can we touch our own nature there? How can we come into contact with it? Dauteaching says something interesting about this in chapter 28. In advance, I would like to say that Emmy and I will be giving a seminar on the topic of courageous communication between women and men. And ultimately, it is also about communicating in accordance with reality, daring to appear in conversation in accordance with reality, revealing ourselves, even if we might offend with it, accepting equally offending information with an open heart. So in chapter 28, Lauzzi writes, this is now my translation, recognize the masculine and yet preserve the feminine. Receive the world in your arms. If you receive the world, the Dao will never leave you. And you will be like a small child. Recognize the white and yet preserve the black. Be a model for the world. If you are a model for the world, the Dao will be strong in you. And there will be nothing that you cannot do. Recognize the personal yet hold on to the impersonal. Accept the world as it is. If you accept the world, the Dao will be in you shine. And you will return to your original self. The world is formed from nothing. Like tools from a wooden block. The Master knows the tools yet preserves the block. Thus she can use everything. Hi. To enable young people to stay at Togenji, we ask for their donation. Also jedenfalls im Hekigan Rokko. Wenn du also danach fragst, was wirklich ist, dann liegst du eigentlich schon falsch. Was war denn wahr? Was war denn seine wirkliche Natur? Was hat ihn umgetrieben? Also wir hatten alle lange keine Erklärung. Also in dem 28. Hi.
