The Berlin day of action against "Islamophobia" is problematic because it involves Islamist actors as partners of the state and thereby endangers the free democratic basic order.
Persons or organizations that advocate Islamist positions or about which there are findings relevant to the constitutional protection authority should by no means be partners of the state!
The text informs about the origin of the term "Islamophobia" and the UN Day against Islamophobia on 15 March. It refers to resolutions of the OIC and claims that Islamist actors in several states use this approach to suppress criticism of political Islam. The text describes the resolution of the Berlin House of Representatives to observe the day as a memorial and day of action from 2026 onwards, and names Raed Saleh as the driving force. It mentions the involvement of the "Expert Commission on Anti-Muslim Racism Berlin" and the Forum Islam Berlin in a state-wide strategy of action. Project leader Tugay Saraç rejects this approach and criticizes that state-funded actors are being shaped by Islamist networks. He warns against wanting to combat extremism with actors who are dependent on Islamist actors from abroad. The text distances itself with an acceptance campaign from Islamist actors and their interpretation of Islam.

Information on the Berlin Day of Action against "Islamophobia" on March 15 ↓
The terms "Islamophobia" and "Islamphobia" have increasingly been the subject of international political initiatives since the 1990s. In particular, states of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) have introduced resolutions at the UN level on so-called "defamation of religions." The stated goal was to better protect Islam from "defamation." However, in several of the driving states – including Pakistan, Qatar, Turkey, Iran, or Saudi Arabia – it has been clearly observed that Islamists use this approach primarily to suppress criticism of political Islam and its claim to power – and furthermore also want to exert subversive influence on politics in Europe and Germany.
After years of lobbying, the UN General Assembly decided in 2022 to introduce an "International Day to Combat Islamophobia," which is observed annually on March 15 – the anniversary of the Christchurch attack in 2019.
In September 2025, the Berlin House of Representatives passed a resolution to observe this day for the first time from 2026 as a memorial and day of action against "Islamophobia." According to media reports, the main proponent of this initiative was Raed Saleh, the chair of the SPD parliamentary group in Berlin. The state of Berlin announced that it would develop a key points paper for a statewide action strategy for the prevention of "Islamophobia." Among other things, the "Expert Commission on Anti-Muslim Racism Berlin" and the Forum Islam Berlin (FIB) are to be involved. The goal is to "consistently combat all forms of extremism, discrimination, group-based hostility, right-wing extremism, and racism" and to identify "needs for support" for Islamic organizations and mosque communities.
Project leader Tugay Saraç rejects this approach by the state of Berlin:
"First of all, I was shocked. Because the UN Day against 'Islamophobia' has an unspeakable history and was driven forward by Islamist governments – and Berlin is, in a sense, going one step further: the state-funded 'Forum Islam Berlin' is shaped by Islamist networks. State authorities are ill-advised to want to combat extremism with actors who are partly dependent on Islamists from abroad and who themselves do not clearly stand on the ground of the free democratic basic order. Persons or organizations that represent Islamist positions or about whom there are findings relevant to the constitutional protection agency should by no means be partners of the state! This should be self-evident. Nevertheless, Berlin has caved in here. One can hardly do greater harm to our free society and to the many people in the Muslim community. With our acceptance campaign, we clearly distance ourselves from these Islamist actors and their interpretation of Islam."
