The critical comparison of democracy and dictatorship based on concrete biographical experiences enables learners to recognize the worth of democratic freedoms and to develop political judgment.
Value-based political judgments are to be learned and tested. These enable new perspectives on our democratic system: what in it is worthy of esteem and protection, but often disappears into taken-for-grantedness.
The text describes a pedagogical workshop by the Ibn Rushd – Goethe Mosque that deals with the graphic novel 'Persepolis' by Marjane Satrapi. The aim is to enable students to position themselves critically with regard to the consequences of political upheavals and the restriction of civil liberties. The workshop uses the three dimensions of the political (Polity, Policy, Politics) and is guided by the Beutelsbacher Consensus in order to test value-based political judgments. In doing so, the comparison between democracy and dictatorship is thematized in the context of flight and integration. The method aims to make clear the worth of the democratic system, which often goes unnoticed in its taken-for-grantedness. The workshop is aimed at various grade levels and subjects and includes a pre-discussion of the film. It is offered by a progressive Islamic institution that promotes diversity and self-determination in Islam.

Workshop: Persepolis
How do people fare in a country when, after a political upheaval, civil liberties are suddenly restricted? How do young people grow up in these countries? How do they fare when fleeing repressive political systems, and what difficulties can arise during integration in the new country? Our workshop "Persepolis for the classroom" enables students to critically position themselves on such questions. Using the graphic novel "Persepolis" by Marjane Satrapi, options for action in a non-democratic system are discussed. Value-based political judgments are to be learned and tested. These enable new perspectives on our democratic system: what is valuable and worthy of protection in it, but often disappears into taken-for-grantedness.
About Marjane Satrapi's "Persepolis"
The Iranian-French comic artist Marjane Satrapi, born in 1969, experienced the Islamic Revolution in Iran as a little girl. Her parents sent her to Vienna as a teenager to escape the Iran-Iraq war. She spent her university years back in Iran, until she later emigrated to Paris permanently. Her experiences with the regime of the Iranian mullahs she processed in the four-volume graphic novel "Persepolis." In 2007, the film of the same name was released, for which she wrote the screenplay and directed. Both the graphic novel and the film received numerous awards.
Methods
The workshop is guided by the question: "Adaptation or resistance? Individual and collective scope for action in non-democratic states." The comparison between democracy and dictatorship is made taking into account the three dimensions of the political: Polity, Policy and Politics. We always orient ourselves by the didactic guiding principles as formulated in the Beutelsbach Consensus: prohibition of overwhelming, controversiality, student orientation. The classroom is not a neutral space, for it is committed to the democratic basic order. This also means that everyone is allowed and should be able to position themselves without fear. Our methods will support the students in this.
Target group
The workshop can be adapted for various subjects and grade levels. In connection with the framework curriculum, the following thematic areas are conceivable in politics lessons:
Thematic area 3.3 "Migration and population" for grade 7/8
Thematic area 3.5 "Democracy in Germany" for grade 9/10
Thematic area 3.6 "Conflicts and conflict resolution" for grade 9/10
Topic Area 3.3. "Democracy Formation" in Cross-Subject Competence Development in Politics and History
The workshop lasts 90 minutes. Part of the preparation is the viewing of the film "Persepolis" (2007) in the class group (an additional 90 minutes).

Workshop: Persepolis
