The connection between faith and reason, as well as the synthesis of historical exegesis and traditional scriptural interpretation, are central theological and philosophical concerns that are expressed in the work of the two laureates.

Professor Gerl-Falkovitz is a witness to the mutual reference of "Fides et ratio." Faith without reason (and that means without philosophy) becomes fanatical; reason without faith ultimately becomes blind.

The text introduces the two laureates of the year 2021 of the Fondazione Ratzinger: Professor Hanna-Barbara Gerl-Falkovitz and Professor Ludger Schwienhorst-Schönberger. It outlines their biographical and academic careers, their teaching activities, and selected publications. Gerl-Falkovitz is presented as a philosopher with a focus on philosophy of religion and cultural anthropology, who has made particular contributions to the works of Edith Stein and Romano Guardini. With Professor Dr. Hanna-Barbara Gerl-Falkovitz, the Fondazione Ratzinger honours a philosopher with a certain focus on philosophy of religion and cultural anthropology. One can also point to names whose work she has particularly distinguished herself in: Edith Stein – the saintly Sr. Benedicta a Cruce, and the philosopher of religion Romano Guardini. What unites her with these two great figures is the method of phenomenology, of careful looking and describing. Professor Gerl-Falkovitz was born in 1945 in the small village of Oberwappenöst in the northern Upper Palatinate (Diocese of Regensburg!). After studies in Munich and Heidelberg, she received her doctorate in philosophy in Munich in 1971 with a dissertation on the Renaissance philosopher Lorenzo Valla. From 1975 to 1984 she was director of studies at Burg Rothenfels, that institution of learning which is also closely linked to the work of Romano Guardini. She received her habilitation in 1979. The habilitation thesis is entitled Leonardo Brunis's Translation of the Nicomachean Ethics. From 1993 to 2011, Professor Gerl-Falkovitz held the chair of philosophy of religion and comparative religion at the Technical University of Dresden. After 09.06.2026 20211113_Final_Vorstellung_der_Preisträger_2021_D_Presse.docx 2 her emeritation, she continues to be tirelessly active as an author and speaker, not least also at priests' conferences and for retreats. At the Hochschule Papst Benedikt XVI. in Heiligenkreuz near Vienna, she has directed the EUPHRat Institute since 2011 (the abbreviation stands for "European Institute for Philosophy and Religion"). From the wealth of her publications, I shall pick out only a few: Romano Guardini 1885–1968. Life and Work. Matthias-Grünewald-Verlag, Mainz 1985. Expanded ²1995 (translations into Italian and French). Introduction to the Philosophy of the Renaissance. Wissenschaftliche Buchgesellschaft, Darmstadt, 1989. Unrelenting Light. Edith Stein – Philosophy, Mysticism, Life, Grünewald Verlag, Mainz, 1991. ²2015. Forgiveness of the Unforgivable? Excursions into Landscapes of Guilt, Repentance and Forgiveness, Graz: Styria 2007. Expanded: Dresden ²2013. Woman – Female – Human. Between Feminism and Gender, Kevelaer: Butzon & Bercker 2009. Mary. The Other Beginning, Heiligenkreuz 2016. Margins. Between Nature, Culture and Religion: the Human Being, Dresden 2020. In addition, there are numerous honorary positions and advisory roles: Professor Gerl-Falkovitz has been chair of the Friends' Circle of Mooshausen since 1992, she has provided scientific advice to the editors of the Critical Complete Edition of the Works of Edith Stein at the Herder Publishing House in Freiburg, and she is co-editor of the Italian complete edition of Guardini's works. 09.06.2026 20211113_Final_Vorstellung_der_Preisträger_2021_D_Presse.docx 3 Professor Gerl-Falkovitz says of herself that she was above all kept in the faith and led ever deeper into it through philosophy. Her experiences as a philosophical pathfinder to the Creed in a largely atheistic context at the Technical University of Dresden in East Germany she brings again and again extraordinarily fruitfully into the discourses in the West, where secularization is likewise advancing. With her research on gender anthropology and her dialogue with many great female figures she gives us a valuable counterweight to the Gnostic leveling of the polarity of man and woman. Professor Gerl-Falkovitz is a witness to the mutual reference of "Fides et ratio." Faith without reason (and that means without philosophy) becomes fanatical; reason without faith ultimately becomes blind. She thereby upholds one of the central concerns of the namesake of the prize, which is awarded to her today with full right. Professor Dr. Ludger Schwienhorst-Schönberger is a biblical scholar. Born in 1957 in Lüdinghausen in North Rhine-Westphalia, he studied theology in Münster and Jerusalem. After his doctorate in 1989 and his habilitation in 1992, he was appointed in 1993 Professor of Old Testament Exegesis and Hebrew Language in Passau. In 2007 he received the call to the chair of Old Testament Biblical Studies at the Catholic-Theological Faculty of the University of Vienna. From his book publications I single out: The Conquest of Jericho. Exegetical Studies on Joshua 6, Stuttgart 1986. The Covenant Code Ex 20,22 – 23,33, Berlin / New York 1989 (Doctoral dissertation). "Happiness is not grounded in man": (Eccles 2,24); Ecclesiastes in the tension field of Jewish wisdom and Hellenistic philosophy; Herder Freiburg, 1994. (Habilitation) 09.06.2026 20211113_Final_Vorstellung_der_Preisträger_2021_D_Presse.docx 4 Studies on the Old Testament and its Hermeneutics, Stuttgart 2005. A Way Through Suffering. The Book of Job, 2007 The Book of Ecclesiastes, Freiburg ²2011 (Herder's Theological Commentary on the Old Testament) The Song of Songs, Freiburg 2015. We are especially pleased and very much looking forward to the Theology of the Old Testament announced for spring 2022. Professor Schwienhorst-Schönberger shows in his work that the synthesis demanded by Article 12 of the Revelation Constitution "Dei Verbum" of historical exegesis on the one hand and traditional scriptural interpretation on the other (consideration of the unity of Scripture, analogia fidei, etc. following the model of the Church Fathers) has not been a bad compromise, but the only appropriate handling of the witness of Revelation, which comes to its climax and completion in the incarnate WORD of God. Without belittling the insights of historical exegesis, Professor Schwienhorst-Schönberger nonetheless stands for the "rehabilitation of the traditional understanding of Scripture," as it is so aptly formulated in the words of Saint Augustine: "Novum testamentum in vetere latet, vetus in novo patet." This required, however, a "paradigm shift in modern biblical scholarship," which Professor Schwienhorst-Schönberger not only carried out himself but also described with clarity. And so it is inwardly consistent that Professor Schwienhorst-Schönberger is not only a learned biblical scholar, but as a researcher of the "spiritual sense" also a sought-after spiritual teacher and a guide to contemplation. He is thus a worthy recipient of the Premio Ratzinger, for it is one of the central theological concerns of Joseph Ratzinger / Pope Benedict XVI to develop the message of the faith from a whole-biblical perspective.

Das Bundesbuch Ex 20,22 – 23,33, Berlin / New York 1989 (Dissertation).
