The Power of the Good Work Is Perseverance

Care · main message Patience · carrying Responsibility · carrying

Perseverance as a virtue is the decisive force for carrying out good works—particularly the care of the poor and the sick—against resistance and securing them in the long term, and it remains in demand in today's care landscape.

The power of the good work is perseverance

The text is a festive speech on the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the Juliusspital in Würzburg. It takes Julius Echter's motto, 'The power of the good work is perseverance,' as a guiding thread and develops it in several sections: perseverance in pursuing a vision (care for the poor), in asserting it against resistance (the cathedral chapter), in material provision (foundation, monastic and cemetery land), and in personal future security (prayer for the founder's salvation of the soul). The text refers to the current hospital and care landscape and calls for perseveringly working to change the framework conditions even today. It commends the work of the present-day employees of the Juliusspital and thanks the Minister of the Interior as the responsible authority. The text ends with the Knittelvers, 'Who comes after, let them also do the best,' as a legacy and a mandate.

Dear Gentlemen of the Oberpflegamt, Dear Minister of the Interior, Dear colleagues of the Juliusspital, or simply dear "Spitäler", Dear sisters and brothers in the Lord! The motto of Julius Echter "Virtus boni operis perseverantia est" – "The strength of the good work is perseverance". So, according to tradition, was the episcopal motto of Julius Echter. A powerful maxim that guided Julius Echter in all his undertakings – after all, he served as Prince-Bishop for 44 years! Much of what he undertook has endured to this day: the refounding of the university, the reinforcement of the fortress with the Echter Bastion, and the Juliusspital, whose cornerstone laying exactly 450 years ago we celebrate today. An impressive record that few can claim. If Echter had once set his mind to something, he pursued his self-set goal with the perseverance that was characteristic of him, as a virtue that was particularly demanded of Catholics in the time of the Counter-Reformation. Still impressive today, how Petrus Canisius, as a prospective Jesuit, wrote in large letters in his school notebook: "PERSEVERA" – "Hold on!" Perseverance and a long breath were needed to, after the upheavals of the Reformation, as the Catholic Church again gain a foothold and re-establish itself. Perseverance in the Pursuit of a Vision "The strength of the good work is perseverance." Julius Echter persistently pursued an improvement of the city's poor relief. In his view, it suffered from three misdevelopments that needed to be corrected. First, the group of beneficiaries was too narrow. Against the principle of residency, according to which only deserving citizens could benefit from poor relief, the prelate insisted that foreigners and travellers too must be provided for. Second, he complained that the civic poorhouses had over time turned into annuity institutions. This meant that one had to buy one's way into the hospitals. In this respect, it was precisely no longer the poor who were cared for, but those who were financially in a position to secure a place. This clientele system had to be put a stop to. Third, it was proven that the civic institutions lacked qualified medical care, as no necessity had been seen to employ "a special physician". Here too, the Prince-Bishop, as "supreme caretaker and provider of the poor", envisioned placing medical care in the hands of professionals. And in general: it would be best to bring all civic institutions together under episcopal leadership with the establishment of an Oberpflegamt. One can vividly imagine that the equally visionary as far-reaching plans of the lord of the land and city did not exactly meet with open ears. Even though Julius Echter, in a years-long dispute with the city council, was not able to implement all his ideas for poor relief, he nevertheless created with the Juliusspital a model institution that met his demands and with which he set standards for centuries. His exceptionally large hospital was a multi-function institution – or in today's care jargon a "complex facility" – that brought together a nursing home, a hospital, an orphanage, and a pilgrim's hostel under one roof. The discussion of the time on the question of what good care consists of and who can afford it has lost none of its urgency. Whoever here, with a view to the current development of the hospital landscape and in elderly care, does not want to be overwhelmed, knows that today too the Echtersche perseverance is needed to call for the necessary changes to the framework conditions and to enforce them in the long term. Perseverance in the Power of Enforcement Against Resistance "The power of the good work is perseverance." Perseverance was also required in the dispute with the cathedral chapter. The greatest resistance is, as is well known, always from within and never from without. So it was in this case, too. The high lords of the cathedral chapter were appalled at the thought of the bishop's soaring plans. They threw everything they had into argument to stop the enterprise. First of all, they naturally looked at the finances. Who on earth was supposed to pay for it? Who was to bear the enormous building costs? They already sensed trouble coming their way. Second, the prince-bishop must surely consider that in the event of war or defense the enemy could make use of the mighty hospital as a bastion against the city, for the hospital complex was planned to be located outside the city walls. And third, half the city was not large enough to accommodate all the "common beggars." Why strain oneself over such a project? Anyone who knows the good Julius Echter knows that all counterarguments fell flat. The hospital came. And the cathedral chapter had to foot the bill too, nothing could prevent that. Perseveringly the bishop pushed his plans forward. After all, the Juliusspital was in his time not only an institution of welfare care, but before the construction of the Neumann residence it was at the same time the prince-bishop's civic representative building. The prince's building and St. Kilian's Church as the heart of the building complex bear witness to this to this day. Echter teaches us: A great idea alone is simply not enough. To the vision, the power of action must be added. Perseverance is needed here too, for there have been good reasons against poor relief in all times. Nothing has changed in that to this day. But Echter was a man of action. Perseverance in the material provision for the future "The power of the good work is perseverance." This also applies to the establishment and endowment of the associated foundation. Julius Echter endowed a large part of his private fortune for the maintenance of the hospital and thereby made clear how seriously he took this project and how much it cost him personally. But as so often, he also drew on the assets of dissolved monasteries for financing. To be named here are the properties of the former Cistercian nunnery of Heiligenthal and those of the Augustinian canonry in Birklingen. Not a year passed without episcopal additional endowments. To this day these endowments fulfill their purpose. As he drew on the assets of former monasteries, so he also drew on the Jewish cemetery as a building site, after the Jewish community had been expelled from the city in the year 1560. For the building site had to be located outside the city walls due to the sheer size of the hospital. All protests against the choice of the Jewish cemetery were of no avail, nor was the reference to the peace of the dead, which must not be disturbed, especially since the cemetery had been acquired by the Jewish community for all eternity. Thankfully, since 2013 the Juliusspital Foundation has commemorated this Jewish cemetery with a historical memorial point in the inner courtyard. In the choice of his means, the energetic prince-bishop was by no means delicate, which cost him many sympathies. And yet: Perseverance meant for Julius Echter always also ensuring that the good idea is sustainably secured. For only through a sufficient financial endowment could Echter's vision of poor and sick care in the Juliusspital be established in such a way that it can still fulfill the founding purpose of its founder in our days. It is the Oberpflegamt that is to be thanked for having preserved the foundation capital through the centuries, also and especially in these pressing and so changeable times. Perseverance in the personal provision for the future "The power of the good work is perseverance." This ultimately also applies to the salvation of the soul of the generous founder. He did not refrain from washing the feet of twelve poor people on Maundy Thursday in the early years in his hospital, and not twelve members of the cathedral chapter, as had otherwise been the custom. In return, he expected the poor to pray for him, to provide for the salvation of his soul. Perseverance was called for. For even in matters of prayer, the founder left nothing to chance. Rather, the residents of the "great hospital" lived in the manner of a secluded monastic convent. They had to pray three rosaries daily. One for the salvation of Christendom, one for the founder, and one for themselves. To fulfill the prayer quota, the foundation's chaplain had been specifically appointed. Only in this way could the debt of gratitude be discharged. At the same time, the founder had the assurance that someone was always putting in a good word for him with God. So a real win-win situation. It is good that to this day this founder's concern is still observed and gratitude towards God and towards those who devote themselves to the physical and spiritual well-being is cultivated. Perseverance and the mandate: "Who comes after, let him also do the best" I come to the conclusion. "The power of the good work is perseverance." In the family tree of virtues, perseverance appears as the daughter of courage. To persevere means to endure bravely. If Aristotle notes that every true virtue lies between two extremes, then in the case of perseverance these are softness or yielding on the one side and stubbornness or obduracy on the other side. To hold the middle between these two ditches, I at least wish upon the General Directorate. Neither obdurate nor yielding, but rather persevering in the sense of courage, it must hold its course. This way it will succeed in reacting flexibly to the challenges of the times, without getting stuck in a fixed idea or giving up prematurely. Echter's motto may also serve as your guiding word for the coming years. To you all, a happy hand, the love for the poor that animated the founder, and the strength of determination that characterized him. My thanks today go not only to the leadership, but to all "hospitals" who serve in the diverse divisions of the Juliusspital with pride and joy, starting from the hospital through the elderly care facility, the palliative care academy, the hospice, and the nursing school to the forestry, agricultural, and viticultural operations. The Juliusspital rooms, of course, not to be forgotten! I would also like to thank our Minister of the Interior today, under whose protection and care the Juliusspital stands. Remain favorable to us, Minister of the Interior. We shall thank you in turn with the dedication and the striving for excellence that inspired Julius Echter in all his endeavors. As it is so beautifully written on the inscription of the hospital in the famous clitter verses of that time: "The Juliusspital called Built for use in Franconia Takes in the poor citizenry Children, sick, and what is damaged Also otherwise destitute foreign guests Who comes after, let him also do the best" "Who comes after, let him also do the best" – that is what we want to take to heart as both heritage and mandate. In this sense, I call out to you all today: Ad multos annos! To many more good years under God's rich blessing!

Also eine echte Win-win-Situation.
