The year 2025 is perceived in personal experience as a phase of inner development and learning, which is however marked by physical and emotional exhaustion resulting from the highly polarized political situation in Germany and the world.

I noticed, once the election was somehow over, I was properly exhausted. That was at the beginning of the year. Somehow it really occupied me a lot, how all of this would turn out.

The text is a transcribed conversation between two speakers from an Evangelical Reformed congregation about the fourth Advent and a personal year in review. The speakers reflect on how they experienced the year 2025, with one addressing personal points of development such as studies and service, while the other highlights the political tension of the federal election. It is discussed how political events become anchored in memory, with one describing physical exhaustion and the other describing forgetting or linking them with personal moments. Topics such as the Iran conflict, the situation in Israel, and the debate on conscription are mentioned as background noise or current stress factors. The text ends with the question of an image-like core of the year, with the speakers noting that political images are often overlaid by personal impressions. There are no explicit theological interpretations, but a pragmatic reflection on time, memory, and societal mood.

Yes, a warm welcome to Advent Podcast Number Four, Fourth Advent. We want to talk today about... ...a little year in review. We're going to do this together now. What has been going on with us this year? What story are we telling about this year? And perhaps, how do we look at the new year? Exactly, a warm welcome to that with Angelina Viel. And Daniel Fricke. So Angelina, I now have to make a confession. I hate year in reviews. I find it so dreadful. At the end of the year, they're everywhere. In every time slot on television, everywhere there are year in reviews. What has all happened? And then I had suggested that we do that. And I'm surprised at myself. But the idea today is a bit to look at what is actually there. And we made it our rule that we don't agree beforehand on what we're going to talk about, but simply go within ourselves again and think. So now it's really exciting for me too. Tell me, how was 2025? What happened? A lot happened in 2025. And I would say, for me it was also such a relative curve. I would say, 2025 started relatively well for me. In January was my intermediate seminar from my voluntary service. That was a very nice start to the year. Somehow seeing a lot of people again, somehow having a nice time together. It snowed a lot where we were. Even though the way there was absolutely crazy, with six changes somehow on the way there. Then it also got better and better, but it also got more and more stressful. If we look at the Confirmand Project, which also ramped up there, it went into the hot phase. We were thinking about how to make an exhibition for it. We were in very strong contact with the Yichun community there. For me it also meant finishing this publication. The design. I remember in May, April, that was already a very tense time. Definitely with a lot of to-dos. But somehow I found it totally enriching. For me it was a great time. We had the exhibition openings in the Yichun community, we had the Confirmation. I would say, around that time it was somewhat my highlight of the year. Then it went a bit downhill. Because I don't cope well with little work. Then it was over. It was okay. It was not a complete low point of the year, but it is definitely not the highlight. Then a small phase of nothing. Where I was sitting on the scholarship applications, that of course also took up a lot of space. Then, I would say, the last few months, where university had started for me, it definitely went uphill. Of course a new environment, new people. But somehow also totally enriching. People whom you now get to know anew, whom you didn't know before, but who have already become important now. Many cool new possibilities. And you know, it will continue to develop in the future, continue to intensify. Now simply a time where I find, many new options, many new possibilities, which will also continue. I'm simply looking forward to it there. Yes, cool. That was now your very personal year in review with of course many points that I have also somehow picked up on. I was thinking, interestingly, you now started very personally. I was thinking, what remains for me if I would sort this year into such a row of years, you know, I have already a few more years than you. What kind of year was it? And what from this year really stays with me very strongly is this election campaign, interestingly in the spring. We also tried a bit to get involved, a bit also with actions to do something. But I really know that it was somehow an exciting time. We had these winter lectures here, yes also on the topic democracy doesn't fall from the sky, where it came down to compromises. But I noticed, once the election was somehow over, I was properly exhausted. That was at the beginning of the year. Somehow it really preoccupied me, how all of this would turn out. And I went out of it, I felt as if I myself had run a campaign. And I was also genuinely a bit taken aback. Not just because of the results, that of course also preoccupied me in a way, but I simply found it incredibly exhausting. And I think also from the climate in our country. So it was very polarized. So it was somehow very agitated. People also had a bit of a worry, maybe the parties also had worries, how things would go on for them, what it would somehow become. It was declared a directional election. And somehow I really felt an intense tension there. And especially also in the weeks before, what was all happening, also in the media perhaps. And that actually never really happened to me before. So that an election physically took such a toll on me. Otherwise it was always somehow physically and also mentally somehow preoccupied. Otherwise it was like, I just voted and then something changed and then it was all easy. But I really perceived a very, very great tension there somehow. Can you relate to that? You were just looking a bit skeptical. No, because I find it interesting, because I had also been thinking, okay, what remains somehow politically, this year with me, and I say the older one, I completely forgot that it was the federal partial election. So I of course remember the winter lectures somehow. But for me, it already seems so far away somehow. And I also thought about it, especially not only in Germany, but also America. So Trump is also not that long ago. So it already seems to me like half an eternity again. So both somehow, that we now have March as Chancellor, that already seems to me as if it was at least two years ago. That's why I find it interesting that it somehow took such a toll. Because it didn't really affect me that strongly. So I mean, I remember, I did postal voting somehow, but then the topic was also a bit done for me. I followed it further right away. And we also talked about it and discussed it. But somehow once it was over, it was somehow over for me. And then it no longer played such a big role for me. Yes, that is somehow interesting. So I didn't have to dig around for so long when we talked about the topics. There I said, man, I definitely want to say something about the federal election. It was immediately there as a topic, because it stood out so much to me. And after that, there was also a big lesson for me, what was otherwise politically significant. Of course always now and then Trump, always now and then somehow Israel, Palestine, Russia, Ukraine. So but that is somehow already felt like a, yes, like a level that somehow keeps running, but with little amplitude, yes, already a bit where it becomes more diffuse for me. Where I can't really say where it came from, but now a really intense moment. Of course, somehow the peace agreement then in Israel with the Hamas somehow already. I believe I couldn't say now which month it was or at what time it was. That is somehow, that is rather difficult for me. So otherwise there are sometimes also dates like that. There is also a tendency. Dates like October 7, 9. 9. 11, so after September, clear, 9. November. So there are dates that really stand as dates, which is also a form of culture of remembrance, I always notice. So if you somehow like something, gives you the date best. Then everyone remembers and then you can also use it annually somehow to remind yourself. So what I notice is that it all blurs together. So you really need to look up when exactly something was. So I find it interesting, because I can remember things relatively well by associating them with events. For example, I remember when Israel attacked Iran. I remember, I have no idea, in what timeframe that was, date, month. I know it was the moment when we were together in Darmstadt at the archive. I remember that when we arrived in Darmstadt, the news was there that it was breaking news at the time. And so I can do things like that, associate them relatively well. Not through dates or months, but very strongly with personal memories and events. That's something I notice very strongly in myself. Yes, that's right, or sometimes there are, I'm also more of a person who has images in their head, sometimes I still know what I was doing when I heard something. For example, with 9/11, I actually wanted to watch stock market news and was completely surprised. When I then couldn't see it, I was, as a young person, a bit more into that. And that had interested me a lot. And then it happened and then I know, I called my friends at the time, now my wife, and told her, or it was like that, she called me and then I said, Nisse, I can't talk on the phone, the World Trade Center is on fire. And she told me afterwards that she found it completely, that's the dumbest excuse I could possibly come up with. She hadn't really gotten it yet. And I was completely perplexed, but so I understand. I can also remember situations like that very strongly and also often images of when I learned something. That too. But the images from this year, I don't know, can you somehow still recall an image? Also in Germany? So you just said Iran? Of course, that crazy bombing of the nuclear facilities. But is there somehow another image where you would now say, hey, so 2025, the date is above and below is somehow like that, it's anyway a composite image made up of different motifs. Is there somehow an image that has stuck with you? As I already said, I really have more of these personal impressions in my head. So if it were 2025, it would be images from my life and less political. What has really stood out to me again recently is the political, of course, with this debate about the Werflich. Of course it's current, of course it's been kind of simmering for a while. I mean, I think it occupies me mainly because I'm still a few years away from the Knobben. I mean, if you will, I've served my civil service with you. I mean, I know that many people a few years younger than me are somehow occupied with it. I mean, I was also a substitute teacher in school. So the students I had there are now immediately affected. So politically speaking, that's the debate that has stuck in my head the most right now, but of course also because it's very current. I don't know whether I should just get more involved with politics again or whether it really just doesn't stick with me that strongly. But what would be your image of the year? Yes, that's interesting. I now had a bit more time because you asked me the question. I wouldn't know right now so concretely. It's more like more heads for you somehow very much. So guys, so Trump also March, what you said, which somehow people already knew a bit. But where one wondered, what exactly are they like? How do they somehow perform in office and how will it be? And I think, there I now got a clear picture somehow. But such an epic moment, where I would now say, that's exactly it. In the sense of a bow or such an epochal image, then I am actually again rather with the personal things. And there was for me the stumbling stone laying here with our project for Jakob Horowitz and his family, the rabbi in Unterlindau. That was such a very, very dense moment, simply because it was also emotionally dense. We were there together with the relatives really from all over the world and we, the young people there told about it, to speak in English. So that really in advance already thought, that will definitely be emotional. But I was then also really overwhelmed, I have to say, inwardly. Or of course another image now in the Paulskirche, when we there also were allowed to present the project and two of our ex-confirmed there presented it. So that was really moving, so also to notice this whole context, but then also somehow to feel what such a project can trigger. So that I definitely take very strongly with me from this year, also as images. Yes, that is above all with the project is somehow also a crazy development. So I came already in the middle of the project. I remember my first hour, that was still last year, but where you then somehow jumped at the windows and then one of the ex-confirmed somehow went to the front and then somehow explained how the windows looked back then. And I remember, I sat there not, I landed here. I thought, there will be a lot of teaching and now I have to somehow learn other historical facts and something like that. And architecture. And architecture, so nothing is further from me than architecture. But then somehow this very slow development from somehow we'll take a look at the Frankfurt-History-App. We'll then do tours outside. Then somehow as the results somehow became more concrete. The Lego synagogue was finished, the Minecraft synagogue and so on and so forth. And that the idea then came from you, you want to somehow show it. First the Jewish Museum, that was a bit more difficult. But then the Jewish community, which somehow immediately jumped on it, on the Bible House and then somehow this development. So then we were all of a sudden curating an exhibition. And then it somehow always further developed and always further progressed. We did a tour through the West. Then we worked on an exhibition. Then it was somehow finished. We then had the exhibition opening with also the church president Christiane Tietz, which was also simply crazy, in the Ignaz Bubis community center. Then was somehow the confirmation. Then we had the stumbling stone laying and then was again somehow exhibition opening and then we were invited to the Paulskirche. So very, very many things somehow, which somehow added up. Now we also have the report from the Hessian Broadcasting here about the project. So I find it crazy, because I find, that shows somehow, even if it already started a bit in 2024, but we had such a small idea. So I think, was actually such a WhatsApp message, so, hey, do you want to do something about it? How such a small spark can become such a big fire. I found that somehow very, very crazy. Yes, and I think, that is also a bit what I take with me personally, I believe. That was a year of growth also for me very strongly, where I also again I have discovered things and also redone things. So you already mentioned it, where we suddenly made these roll-ups for this exhibition. So that was also beyond my comfort zone, not yet in the panic zone, but so in the growth area, of course, where I moved a lot there and was not just operating in the comfort zone. And I actually found that challenging, really challenging. We really had days where we, yes, then also within a few minutes or half an hour somehow had to quickly sort something out. And I find that, that now sounds a bit self-absorbed, no, but I think we made good decisions. And also sometimes against the advice of others, where we, as I said, have, let's just do it that way. And we both somehow had the one, that is a good idea. And then others said, no, don't do that, it makes no sense at all. No one needs it. And then we did it and in retrospect I would also say, we did a lot right. So definitely not everything. And of course, that doesn't happen either and mistakes also happen. That's clear. But I think overall we managed quite a lot quite well. So I also find that. We somehow believed in it or did it for ourselves. Maybe also. So I think that's also the interesting thing about the project. We didn't say, we want to create a huge public awareness with it, but first of all we had fun with it and the young people too. So a difficult topic. But we really somehow that motivated us. We did it with that, also infected the young people a bit with it, they again enthused us. And then that, it somehow gained radiance through that. So yes, interesting that we now actually want to talk about the year. Now we're fully in the Konkribrojekt. But of course, that was the project for, I think, for us also in this year. Yes, I mean, that started. Actually much earlier, before I came. But let's say, since September, when I was there, it dragged on until the end of May, beginning of June. So until the last exhibition opening in the Bibelhaus properly. Then there was a time when it was a bit quieter. And then came the invitation from the Polskirche and the summer HR and everything. So it somehow doesn't stop. Of course, it simply took up an enormous amount of space. And somehow an enormous amount of work. Especially as already said, somehow so April, May. It was already somehow the time when it was really extremely demanding. And where we really somehow sat together for days and thought about the roll-ups, how we could best do it and prepared things there, corrected things. So I remember how many correction loops it had at the end. So where there were always still somehow things. But yes, but that is somehow also. That shows somehow also how important the project was. Not only for us, but also for the congregation. So that's only become so big because it somehow then also encountered such great feedback. And also greater than positive feedback. So I don't remember any negative feedback in this regard. It was simply great how much positive resonance it received. Not only in the public, but that people said, cool project, we're also contributing something to it. And completely selflessly. So the ones who somehow gave us tips and hints and worked with us. Also accompanied the way to a certain extent. But simply because they somehow had the desire for it. And I actually find that something that was also new to me from a professional context. So that many accompanied it so positively and didn't somehow first have concerns and said have. No, you have to do something else, or I would actually do it differently if I were to do it, but rather really have supported us. I find that, I think that also speaks a little for Frankfurt, I find, where there is a lot of commitment. And where there is also a community that also supports each other. So I find that great and of course, you mentioned the congregation, one has to say that too. So also from here I also had the trust of the people, on which I could build. So also here in our committees, who said, yes, do that wonderfully. And the ones who simply really accompanied that very lovingly. And I find that is for me also something that I learned again in this time. What trust, so trust in the young people, but also from others trust in us or trust in me, also trust in you, what that somehow then suddenly makes possible. And now where you say, I find trust is actually really a good keyword for the entire year. So also if I somehow look at further projects, what was also somehow very big, if we are at the Historical Staying is also somehow the birthday of Sister Liselotte, which we then also somehow celebrated in April, where we then with Mr. Michael Ströder just went to Heidelberg, to interview Johanna Weyer of C'mon. So that is now really coming into focus for me again, what was also somehow a crazy trust, what was also somehow attached to me. So we then did so an interview service, so to speak. Live podcast, as some of the confirmants then somehow said. Must also remind you. And where I then also thought, how much trust in me in the songs was brought, so from the congregation but also somehow from you. So I mean, it is not self-evident somehow in the free space somehow to put on the podium so to speak. And then, that we then somehow spoke about Liselotte Neumann. And somehow like an impact in the congregation, but also somehow insights from the interview with Johanna Weyer of C'mon. What was also totally nice, because she then also traveled especially from Heidelberg here on that day. That was great. I would not have expected that at all at first. And no, that was, the interview alone was great, what we somehow learned there. But also this conversation of ours, this podcast sermon, so that was so spontaneous ultimately. So I believe, we somehow, we did not have much time to coordinate that. And that is what you say. So if one knows each other and can rely on each other, then it just works. So in that sense, the topic of trust, so it is really

Was ist alles passiert? Was ist passiert? Kannst du damit was anfangen? Hast eben schon so skeptisch geguckt. Also das scheint mir einfach schon wieder halbe Ewigkeit. Oktober, 9. 9. 11, also after September, klar, 9. November. Also da müsst dich wirklich nachgucken, wann irgendwie da was genau war. Also hast du jetzt gesagt Iran? Also Typen, also Trump auch März, was du gesagt hast, was irgendwie die man auch schon ein bisschen kannte. Also bestimmt nicht alles. Also ein schwieriges Thema.
