The Christian community must overcome modern individualism and the hardening of the heart by returning to love as the core of the law and by actively cultivating the inner disposition in worship, in order to found a civilization of love.
To love means to fulfill the whole law.
The text analyzes the liturgical readings of the 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle A) for 6 September 2026. It connects the prophetic warning of Ezekiel, the responsibility in Paul's letter to the Romans, and the ethical teaching of Jesus in Matthew. The exegesis emphasizes that divine efficacy does not abolish the personal responsibility of the individual, but honors it. In the present-day section, social media and individualism are named as challenges that are to be met through the 'civilization of love' and a return to the essential core of the Gospel. The text calls for not hardening the heart in worship and for nurturing the unity of the community in order to make reconciliation possible. Concrete calls to action for sermons and parish life are formulated, aiming at humility and care.

Reading from the book of Ezekiel 33, 7-9 If you do not speak to the wicked, I will demand an account of his blood.
Through a powerful image, the Lord illustrates to Ezekiel the role he must fulfill within the people of Israel. Certainly, the figure of the watchman allows one to glimpse the role of the prophet: to detect dangers from afar, to warn the people about them, and therefore to compel those who hear his word to adopt a stance of acceptance or of prevention. However, the divine action exercised through the prophetic word, according to the theology expounded in other sections of the book of Ezekiel, does not exempt the subject from his personal responsibility. On the contrary, it elevates and dignifies it, leaving the final moral decision in the exclusive hands of the individual.
This experience of harmony between the force of prophetic preaching and the response of acceptance or rejection by the people could have become manifest after a profound reflection on the catastrophe of the exile and the stubbornness of Israel and of its leaders in accepting the constant warnings of the Lord made through his envoys.
Twenty-Third Sunday of Ordinary Time (Cycle A)
September 6, 2026
2 Psalm 94, 1-2. 6-7. 8-9 (R.: 8) R/. O that today you would hear the voice of the Lord: “Do not harden your hearts”
This well-known psalm, called by the liturgy of the Church the “Invitation,” exhorts the people to the praise of the Lord in a cultic context. Possibly, along with other similar songs, it was used as part of the hymnbook that served as an introduction to the great liturgies of the Temple of Jerusalem. The tone of the song in its first part is festive. The second part, changing abruptly in theme, contains a strong warning to the people, taken from the experience of Israel in the desert.
The psalmist highlights there the importance of listening to the Lord, making reference to the great Deuteronomistic tradition expressed in the famous sentence of Dt 6,4: “Hear, O Israel: the Lord is our God, the Lord is one.” Nevertheless, through the recourse to the history of Israel in the desert, the author expresses the difficulty of the people to listen and, therefore, to obey the voice of the Lord in the precariousness of everyday facts. The hardening of the heart is seen as a testing of the power of the Lord and as an object of reproof. This inner attitude becomes a cause of suffering for the believing people. Avoiding this obstinate position will become the final objective of any form of worship performed by the people in the Temple.
Reading from the letter of the apostle Saint Paul to the Romans 13, 8-10 To love is to fulfill the whole law.
Paul, making use of his extensive knowledge of the Scriptures, performs a rereading of the Law (the Torah) employing a single essential verse that intends to illuminate the totality of the commandments. After his profound Christian experience—which had led him from justification by the works of the Law, proper to Pharisaism, to justification by the grace of Christ—he manages to express, in a brief synthesis, the core of the divine law.
Following the example of Jesus, he takes as a point of reference the text of Lv 19,18 to find in it the essence of all the other commandments of the Law, which according to Jewish tradition were 613. The reflection of Paul does not point to the most
3 important commandment, but to the deep spirit of the Law. His point of reference is love. This is not understood as an abstract feeling that simply must be expressed, but as the configuring motor of each of the concrete actions of the believer directed toward his neighbor. Love then appears clearly as the source and summit of the whole Christian life.
Reading of the holy gospel according to Saint Matthew 18, 15-20 If he listens to you, you have gained your brother.
These verses from Matthew are part of chapter 18, where one of the five great discourses that the evangelist places in the mouth of Jesus is expressed, seeking to show the most important aspects of his teaching and way of life. This fourth discourse is called by exegetes the “ecclesial discourse” or “discourse of the community,” because it is full of practical references to the way of life of believers within a group of brothers in faith in Christ.
In this case, we find three concrete applications of Christian love: a process of correction, an act of forgiveness, and an invitation to prayer. The unifying characteristic of the three situations presented is the consideration of the believer as a person who lives facing a body of brothers and never as an isolated individual who acts solely in function of their own interest.
The process of correction is gradual, not immediate, respecting the freedom of the one being corrected and allowing for their possibility of conversion. Likewise, the invitation to forgiveness contemplates the freedom of the one who exercises it. Forgiveness thus appears not as an automatic fruit, but as a path of progressive liberation from resentment or hatred, which also has repercussions on the heavenly plane.
Finally, the efficacy of prayer is expressed through the union of the community around the petition. Where the common invocation of the believers is found, an expression of communion in faith, the presence of the Risen One is present among them, who accompanies the intercessory action of the ecclesial body.
4
The believer, sentinel of society: many today seek to influence the decisions of a large group of people or to provide them with accurate guidelines to live in a more assertive manner. Gurus, influencers, and coaches abound on social networks who, with their advice and teachings, seek to effectively guide the most important decisions of life. The first reading reminds us that faith in the Lord continues to be a light that allows receiving a wisdom that goes beyond purely human schemes. With the word of the Lord in the mind and in the heart, the believer is capable of offering today also, as the prophet Ezekiel did, a guide to make more human decisions, which make people more fulfilled and happy.
Return to the essential: one of the ideas that has resonated most in the discourses of Pope Leo has been the return to the essential of the Gospel. It is easy that, in the midst of the complexity of so many proposals that circulate both in society and in the Church, we lose focus and come to lose sight of the essential of Christian faith. Paul reminds us of the very heart of the Gospel: the love of God, expressed in Christ and received by us so that it becomes love for the brothers. It is necessary that, under this prism of divine love, we can measure our acts of faith towards others and enrich them with more love. Thus we can go on realizing the project of God for our society: the civilization of love.
Put the heart back into worship: we rejoice to see our parish communities full and active in the Sunday liturgies, Sunday after Sunday. However, the introductory psalm that the liturgy gives us today invites us to go beyond the simple presence in worship. It reminds us, following the prophetic line of Israel, that true worship is given not only with the body, but above all with the interior: with the mind and the heart. The union between intention, will, and worship must be expressed again with clarity in our preachings, so that each liturgy touches the deepest part, avoiding the hardening of the heart through worships that do not reach the fundamental of Christian existence.
The importance of the other: We live in a cultural environment that privileges individualism in an exacerbated manner and bases life decisions solely on personal convenience. Nevertheless, the Christian proposal invites us to always look beyond our small, self-absorbed world and to approach the richness of the other, with all its complexity and beauty. Our objective in the experience of faith should be the progressive abandonment of the self, in order to move toward the encounter with the other person, with interests, thoughts, and feelings different from our own. In this recognition of life realities different from one’s own, the fullness of Christian love will gradually manifest itself.
6
Entrance Monition Brothers, the Church, on this day of the Lord, invites us to gather as a community called by Christ, who is just and merciful, to allow ourselves to be redeemed, to recognize our dignity as children, and to open ourselves to the true freedom that is born from faith.
As we begin the Month of the Bible, we dispose our hearts so that the Word of the Lord may occupy a central place in our life and in our faith, and so that His voice may illuminate our path as a family and as a Christian community.
In this Eucharist, the Lord wishes to cultivate in us a docile heart: a good soil where His Word may take root, heal our relationships, and bring forth fruits of love, reconciliation, and peace. Let us prepare ourselves to participate with gratitude, listening today to His voice and celebrating the mystery that strengthens our communion.
Monition for the Readings
Let us prepare ourselves to receive the Word of God, which today invites us to listen to the voice of the Lord without hardening our hearts, to live love as the fulfillment of the law, and to assume with humility the responsibility of caring for the faith and the life of our brothers and sisters, so that Christ, present in the midst of His community, may cultivate in us fruits of reconciliation and communion.
As an alternative, in place of the monition for the readings, the solemn enthronement of Sacred Scripture may be carried out in the parish church. (See appendix)
7
Prayer of the Faithful Presider: Let us present our petitions to the Father, so that He may prepare the soil of our hearts, cause faith to germinate, and grant us fruits of communion, justice, and peace.
R/. Lord, cultivate in us the seed of Your Kingdom.
1. For the Pope, the bishops, priests, deacons, and all promoters of evangelization: that, illuminated by Sacred Scripture, they may be true promoters of the Gospel, capable of caring for the faith of the brothers and sisters with patience and of accompanying processes of reconciliation.
2. For the new president of the Republic and the new government: that the light of the Word of God may grant them wisdom, integrity, and a spirit of service, and that their decisions may favor the common good, social justice, reconciliation, and the dignity of all Colombians.
3. For our homeland and for those who work for peace: that, guided by the Word that denounces evil and sows hope, we may learn to uproot from the common soil the seeds of selfishness, corruption, and violence, and to sow trust, dialogue, and shared responsibility.
4. For the poor, the sick, migrants, victims of violence, and those who live in loneliness: that they may find in our communities a good soil, where the Word is translated into closeness, care, and solidarity.
5. For us, gathered in this Eucharist: that, in this Month of the Bible, we may not harden our hearts, that we may listen today to the voice of the Lord, and that we may allow His Word to cultivate in us a living, humble faith, fruitful in works of love.
Presider: Good Father, receive these petitions that Your Church makes to You with confidence; water our faith with Your grace, strengthen our fraternal bonds, and make us bear abundant fruits of love, justice, and peace. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

9 Twenty-Third Sunday of Ordinary Time Cycle A September 6
1. Accompanying What must we do when one of us does evil? If my Christian brother commits a fault against me, if he offends me, I must have charity toward him and, above all, speak to him personally, explaining to him that what he said or did is not good. And if the brother does not listen to me? Jesus suggests a progressive intervention: first, speak to him again with two or three other people, so that he becomes more aware of the error he committed; if, nevertheless, he does not accept the exhortation, it is necessary to tell the community; and if he does not listen even to the community, we must point out to him the fracture and the separation that he himself has caused, thereby diminishing communion with the brothers in faith.
2. Motivating Our capacity to understand the world increases when we are close to Jesus, listen to his word, and follow his teachings. If we learn to see the world with the eyes of Jesus, it will be easier to recognize the truth and to act moved by the merciful love of God.
Before God, we are all sinners and in need of forgiveness. All of us. Jesus, in fact, told us not to judge. Fraternal correction […] is a mutual service that we can and must render to one another. Correcting the brother is a service, and it is possible and effective only if each one recognizes himself as a sinner and in need of the Lord’s forgiveness. The same conscience that makes me recognize the error of the other reminds me even before that I myself have erred and err many times.1
1 Ibidem
10 3. Challenging Jesus proposes to us the challenge of fraternal correction, because God counts on us to make it possible for those who do evil to change their behavior. We are collaborators in the saving work of Jesus; therefore, we are called to warn and correct the brother who does evil and strays from the will of God the Father.
If I must correct my brother:
• Let not pride move me, nor the desire to settle accounts or take revenge for something;
• Let me not seek to demonstrate that I am right or that “I am better”;
• Let me be able to remove the beam from my eye to help the other remove the splinter from his.
Lord Jesus, help me to follow your example in order to help and care for my brothers instead of hurting them; give me the ability not to remain silent and to correct them when necessary.
Amen.
11 Entrance Monition We find ourselves once again gathered in the house of God to respond to his call in the Sunday Eucharist. The Lord teaches us one of the most important criteria for living in community: fraternal correction based on love.
God counts on us to lead to himself those who have strayed from his path.
Let us prepare our mind and our heart to participate joyfully in this encounter.
Monition to the Readings Ezekiel uses the comparison with the watchman and conveys the function of the prophet, who “announces” things on behalf of God and, at the same time, “denounces” and rebukes people or the whole people so that they may return to him. Saint Paul instructs us in the life of the community through love for the neighbor. For his part, in the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus invites us to fulfill our mission as prophets through the practice of fraternal correction.
12 Prayer of the Faithful
Presider: Let us present to God the Father our supplication, trusting in the promise of the Lord Jesus —“if two of you agree on earth to ask for anything, my Father in heaven will grant it to you”— and let us say together:
R./ Good Father, hear our prayer.
1. For Pope Leo and the holy Church of God, that we may be a living sign of unity and practice fraternal correction with wisdom and love. We pray to the Lord.
2. For the rulers and leaders of nations, that they may work tirelessly for peace, social justice, and the defense of life throughout the world. We pray to the Lord.
3. For those who suffer because of loneliness, illness, or sadness, that they may receive comfort and relief in their pain. We pray to the Lord.
4. For all of us gathered here, that we may hear the voice of the Lord, let us not harden our hearts and let us joyfully fulfill the law of love.
Let us pray to the Lord.
President: Lord, our God, who corrects those who fall and calls sinners to yourself, hear our supplications and grant us the joy of remaining in your love. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
