True Christian faith and access to the Kingdom of God consist in the conscious acceptance of a humble, awestruck childlikeness that is lived in service to the weak and disabled.

True and unadulterated childlikeness as a learning goal for adults and as an entry condition for the Kingdom of Heaven!

The sermon commemorates the late Prelate Dr. Josef Schweiger and connects his life's work in the Catholic Youth Welfare Association (KJF) with the Gospel of Jesus and the children. The preacher interprets the call to become like children as an invitation to humility, to wonder, and to untroubled joy, which Schweiger preserved despite his academic education and leadership role. The historical development of the KJF after the Second World War is discussed, particularly the protection and promotion of children with disabilities. Schweiger's work is described as a pioneering achievement that grew a small association into a large social enterprise. The deathbed image of a candle with a cross-shaped wick is interpreted as a symbol of his selfless service and his following of Jesus. The sermon concludes with the hope for the future glory of the children of God.

16.01.2026 20260114_P_Messe_Dr._Josef_Schweiger_end.docx 1 Sermon for the Mass in Memory of Prelate Dr. Josef Schweiger on January 14, 2026, in Regensburg Cathedral Reading: 1 John 3:1-2 Gospel: Mark 10:13-16 “Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, if you do not change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Mark 10:14-15) Or, quoted from another context: “Unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:3) You, dear sisters and brothers, may have thought these were unusual words for a Mass for a deceased person, while the Lord’s Director of Caritas, acting as deacon, proclaimed these words of the Gospel to us. And yet I must say: The longer I reflect on the life’s work of our late Prelate Schweiger, and the more vividly I see him before my mind’s eye, the more this word seems to cast a characteristic light on the deceased. There is already enough to marvel at in Jesus’ words. It is not the adults who are held up as an example to the children, but the children who are held up as an example to the adults. It is not the children who should go to the school of the adults, but the adults who should go to the school of the children. True and unadulterated childlikeness as a learning goal for adults and as an entry condition for the kingdom of heaven! And is it not so: Can we not learn from children how and that one can actually accept a gift with pure joy, without the secret background consideration of how one can repay—meaning “avenge”—at the next opportunity. The wonder of children, the unadulterated ability to rejoice, the heartfelt laughter—entry conditions for the kingdom of heaven! What applies to children in 16.01.2026 20260114_P_Messe_Dr._Josef_Schweiger_end.docx 2 general applies all the more to children with disabilities and handicaps. But let us proceed in order. Let the children come to me, especially those who must bear a heavy cross due to a handicap, whether congenital or acquired. When Josef Schweiger was born into a large family in Riedenburg in 1936 and grew up there, dark clouds had gathered over our homeland, an ideology in power that was deeply hostile, in particular, to the weak, to disabled life. The rulers often did not even shrink from intruding into church institutions to carry out their diabolical work. Many of the children and young people did not survive. Also under the impression of this dehumanizing ideology and its consequences, courageous women and men began after the war to build up and expand church institutions, above all the Catholic Youth Welfare, with the goal of providing every child, every young woman and man with the appropriate support suited to them, thus enabling participation in life. Into this dynamic fits the life’s work of our Prelate Schweiger. Under his aegis, “the Catholic Youth Welfare [...] grew by 75 institutions and services and from about 200 employees to over 2,000. As one of the great pioneers at the head of a socio-charitable association, Prelate Schweiger developed a small welfare association into a significant social enterprise from the 1970s onwards.” Thus, Director Eibl summarized the work of Prelate Schweiger, at least from a statistical perspective, in his obituary. An expansion and professionalization not for the sake of the fame or reputation of a church association, but for the sake of people, for the sake of the children and young people whom the Lord has entrusted to us. “Let the children come to me.” 16.01.2026 20260114_P_Messe_Dr._Josef_Schweiger_end.docx 3 And then: “Unless you become like children...” The “Theology of Childhood,” the significance of “childlikeness,” belongs to the most innovative aspects of the New Testament message, which has still not been sufficiently understood and caught up with. Among the consequences, as I have already hinted, is that adults in the many institutions of youth welfare are often not simply the teachers, but themselves the learners, the pupils. “Unless you become like children...” I do not want to gloss over anything. I also know that there is the “childish,” which must precisely not be confused with the “childlike”: unfeigned, unclouded joy, heartfelt gratitude and attention, an overwhelmed sense of wonder, and much more. Whoever has already had the pleasure of being interviewed by Radio “Sag was,” who has already practiced penalty shoot-outs with the “Bananenflankern,” or even, who has celebrated First Communion or Confirmation with the children of the Pater-Rupert-Mayer-Zentrum, knows what I mean, knows what I am talking about. Far more than paternalistic care, the work of youth welfare is often enough a source of one’s own enrichment, of being gifted. What treasures of humanity does a society deprive itself of, which from the outset seeks to eliminate these dimensions? The more magnificent the work of the KJF, to whose growth and flourishing our Prelate Schweiger has contributed enormously. And when I look at the letters of Prelate Schweiger, and when I recall him once again in the encounters we had, especially in the first years of my episcopate here in Regensburg, then I must say: He, the highly educated theologian, trained at significant faculties in Europe, Innsbruck and Madrid, he, the assertive leadership personality, the clever and skilled negotiator, the – yes, today one says so – social manager, he had preserved a very own childlikeness and humanity. 16.01.2026 20260114_P_Messe_Dr._Josef_Schweiger_end.docx 4 Or did he perhaps also, in his dealings with children and young people, which he always sought and cultivated, did he perhaps even learn and acquire this childlikeness anew? For it is also a fact that our daily dealings can shape and form us. “Unless you become like children...” Dear sisters and brothers, for the death portrait of the KJF for their Prelate Schweiger, a remarkable image was selected: You have it, I think, before you: A burning candle, whose bent wick forms a cross. A wonderful motif. The image has a KJF history: The candle was brought by Mr. Robert Gruber, a long-standing department head of the KJF, from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem and used at a morning impulse in spring 2018 in the Bishop-Wittmann-Zentrum. Mr. Deisenrieder noticed that the wick had deformed into a cross shape. What a sign, what a symbol, what a comment also once again to the ordination motto of Josef Schweiger: “Abide in my love.” Like a candle, he allowed himself to be consumed in service to the Catholic Youth Welfare. He always understood his service as the following of Jesus Christ, which always also includes carrying the cross, the acceptance of the cross. But precisely so he became light, he became a role model and guiding ideal, he conveyed orientation and at the same time warmth. For this, we say to him from the heart once again today: Thank you. May the Lord God reward you, dear Prelate Schweiger. And may the promise be fulfilled for him, which we have heard in the reading from the First Epistle of John: “Now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been revealed. We know that when he is revealed, we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.” (1 John 3:2) Amen.
