Christian action and the biblical beatitudes serve the hope for the ultimate abolition of suffering, not the justification or the acquisition of reward through enduring present suffering.
The text discusses the theological and practical question of how Christian action in the context of suffering is to be understood. The speakers reject the idea that human suffering or hardship would directly purchase a reward in heaven, such as a 'large house'. They emphasize that work with those in need is done out of vocation and joy, not out of the compulsion to bear a 'cross' in order to obtain grace. Using the beatitudes as an example, it is argued that biblical texts give hope for the abolition of suffering without justifying present suffering as meaningful or willed by God. The speakers clearly distinguish between the real suffering of the poor and the inflationary use of the concept of suffering for minor inconveniences. The central message is that God regards suffering as meaningless and has a plan to end it, which gives comfort to believers without forcing them into passive endurance.

Good afternoon and a warm welcome to Schwarzbrot. It’s great that you’re here again. I’m Loll, and today I have Frank with me. Hello. Would you like to tell us who you are? Yes, I’m Frank. I’ve been the pastor of the Church of Nazarinas in Mainz for six years now. For six years already? A freshly graduated theologian. That sounds like I was about to say “freshly become a father.” But that’s not true. I’m not that. I’m a freshly graduated theologian and I work in the congregation that is very much involved in housing issues in the city center, caring for people in need, and I take great joy in that. Yes, that’s who I am. It’s nice that you’re here. I’m glad, thank you. Today is supposed to be about suffering. I think some people are a bit afraid to come. I thought I’d have to practice suffering now. Not really, but what do you have to do with suffering? My experience, yes, so in the church where I work, a lot of what we do has to do with suffering. Simply because of the people we work with. We encounter people who have very different stories in their lives, but all of them are somehow connected to illness, addiction, homelessness, and of course, in some way, to suffering. Yes, we often encounter these people in a situation where they are broken by this suffering or are in the process of despairing, and are somehow searching and asking. So, there is a lot of experience there. I myself, of course, also have, I mean, it’s not that I always want to shift it onto others, but naturally, I have my own experience too. But exactly, in my professional context, I encounter quite a lot of it. Yes, interesting. And so, when you do this kind of work, with people that not everyone would want to work with, to put it that way, you certainly often encounter people saying, “Oh, you do that really well. It’s amazing that you commit yourself to that.” That happened to me once, and it wasn’t even something where I was truly suffering; I was standing in the rain to raise money for a mission trip. That is suffering, meaning that you stood in the rain. Well, it was quite cold and so on. It wasn’t pleasant, but I was standing there, and then someone said to me, “Oh, you’ll surely get a big apartment in heaven for that.” It’s been over ten years, and it still haunts me to this day, because I found it so absurd. Did you ever tell that person? In that moment, I was like, no, I don’t think so. Well, right now there is full transparency here; you had already told me the story before. I thought about it for a long time. I’ve never experienced it that way. Maybe you should approach that person again, I would say. That really is a strange story. But the thought behind it is one I’ve heard quite often. It’s a thought that has frequently come up for me. So, people simply say, “You do such wonderful work,” and it always carries the implication, “But I wouldn’t want to do it. But they do such wonderful work, ah, and in heaven there is the whole reward for that.” I’m completely of the opinion that we also suffer immensely in the work we do there. It is truly terrible for us to hang out with these people, but in heaven, in heaven, then. There, there is the reward for having suffered so much. Yes. I find that an absurd idea. I find it a truly absurd idea. Yes. But mainly, at that point, I actually find it primarily absurd because it assumes how much I suffer. The person didn’t even ask you, “How much do you enjoy standing there in the rain? Are you actually suffering?” I really enjoy hanging out with these people. Some are a bit rough, some smell a bit strong, but it’s somehow a very unique scene, and I, I don’t know, somehow it has something to it, and I am
I am absolutely happy to be out and about with them, because I feel they have a certain way, I don’t know, they simply have problems that we sometimes don’t have; we have other problems, but I don’t suffer from them all that much. I work hard for it, and our volunteers work hard for it, but I believe no one would do it if we framed it as a burden of suffering, I don’t know, like that. To some extent, it is your calling, perhaps also in this regard. Absolutely, yes. But I also believe that for many of our volunteers, it is always a matter of: I want to do this, and I now understand this as part of my Christian responsibility to do it. But I believe no one would do it with us, or at least it has been done for a long time. So they don’t come and think, “Ah, yes, I must now take up this Christian cross and I must simply do it and endure this suffering for it.” I believe with that mindset, you wouldn’t get very far or last very long. Yes. And I also don’t believe that is what faith or what God expects from us. That someone says, “I don’t want to do this at all, I have no passion for it, I must simply do it because I practice the faith. So that I get a big apartment in heaven. I have one, preferably even as a causality, then I get a big apartment.” Exactly, in my opinion, that simply doesn’t work that way. So I have other areas in which I work, where not everything is always pleasant, but even if it is not pleasant, and I can imagine that your work is not always pleasant either. It is not work. It is like that, rather it is a calling. It is something for which one is also enabled, and to endure what is not pleasant, without lying in the corner here with a lament of wailing. Yes, absolutely. So I also find, and I think, one must, especially when we are now talking about suffering for a few more minutes here or already looking at how it goes, it is already important to distinguish. So the people we encounter, we perceive them, if we are now conversing in the situation of horror. Yes. They only perceive themselves as such partially. But we can still say, yes, okay, there is suffering there. So they are sitting on the street, they are addicted, there is pain, there is injury, there are things that are not healed, there is suffering. A volunteer who now somehow has to click through the slides in the service for three weeks, I don’t know, whether that is suffering. I mean, you know. I find that we use this, yes, you must also simply sometimes suffer for the Lord, regardless of the fact that I am of the opinion that that is already difficult, we sometimes also use it for things where I think, no, that is not suffering. No, that is true. It is used inflationarily. Exactly. And and that already sounded in what you just said. It is different what people perceive as suffering. Yes, cool. So both in what they do, as well as in what they experience. Yes, cool. And for one person, it is then incredible suffering that he has to click through the slides for the third week, and for others, it is not. And to put it very banally for now. The Bible also speaks a lot about suffering or about something that we would describe as real suffering. For example, in the Sermon on the Mount, there is this whole, there we have: Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, I would say, that is suffering. For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. So I believe, I have two, I have two thoughts on that. Yes. And the first thought is, in this context with the people we work with, somehow again. They are, spiritually, they are the ones who are in anguish. I believe we must not try to say to the person in anguish now and say, yes, but just look. You are spiritually. Exactly. How spiritual you are. Yes. You
So you don’t have to find your suffering so terrible. Yes. I think we often have the tendency, at least my damage comes, to try to give meaning to the Christian hope, to the suffering that we have here in this world. Yes. So you are, God tests you, yes, God tests, but not every suffering is a test. Yes. But so, you are Ahn, but at least you are spiritually. So we try to give meaning to suffering and I don’t think that is our message at all. So when we talk with people, it is not the attempt to say, look, it’s not so bad, or look, but the loving God does that with it. Yes. So it is always suffering, it is a worldly matter, it has a worldly admiration, it is to be re-justified, and suffering is not without reason, but it has an admiration, but it is always meaningless. Yes. And our task is not to give meaning to suffering. No. But to say, yes, but we believe in a God, with whom it is different and with whom there is no more suffering. And He has a plan to end it. Exactly. That does not mean that what you are suffering here now is good or that it brings you something or that it is somehow meaningful that you are suffering here now, but it is meaningless and God sees it as meaningless and God has a plan to change it. Yes. Yes. And I believe, in this context, this sentence was written. Yes. Blessed are the poor, for now I don’t even know again when they will continue, for they will ... Fire is the kingdom of God is yours. I also. Yes. It stands here. Oh man, I believe the righteous receive it, both receive it. In any case. So exactly. So blessed are the poor, that does not mean and therefore it is good that you are poor, but it is precisely this dissolution of that, you are blessed and the kingdom of heaven will be yours. Yes. That means, even if you are poor, I give you this sentence in this situation and to say, there is hope despite that. Yes. It is a gift of hope. There is hope in that that you are poor. Yes. I think that is also very clear in the next, on the left it says, Blessed are you who hunger now, for you shall be satisfied. The goal is to become satisfied, not to hunger. Yes, exactly. So, the goal is the abolition of suffering, not the suffering. Yes. And I believe, exactly, I believe, one perspective is, we must not try to sell to people in the suffering situation now that your suffering already has a meaning here or so. Yes. It remains meaningless, but you have a hope for afterwards. The other side is, but we must not sell to people who are not suffering now, see, you must become poor so that you are blessed. See, you must hunger so that you can become satisfied at all. I also do not believe that that is the statement that Jesus then gives us in the Gospel of Luke, Luke. I even believe it is the Gospel of Luke. Yes. It is also the Gospel of Matthew, it is the Sermon on the Mount, the Gospel of Luke is the Sermon on the Plain. Yes. Yes, but so we now have these Bible verses, what are they good for then, who are they given to? So if those, they are supposed to bring hope, we have now established, and they are not a basis, a basis for becoming poor oneself. No, but I believe Luke always has this perspective on the people on the margins. Exactly. That is generally known, actually about the Gospel of Luke, what we say, that is just the Gospel for social justice. Exactly. So I believe, he clearly addresses the people in this suffering situation. So who is supposed to read that? Yes, the Arne or the one who has hunger or the one who strives for injustice but is trampled underfoot. Exactly. He is supposed to read that now. He is supposed to read that and for him it is written. Yes, how does one, how does one then deal with people like the rich young ruler? Who did you have earlier at
Were you agitated during our preliminary discussion? Yes, I find it funny, because I, well, I always meet people who say, well, the essence of the Rich Young Ruler or also of the story with the eye of a needle and so on is that we must be poor for it to work. So I have to create poverty in myself or in my life in order to have access to God. Now, I am not really a proponent of the prosperity gospel, so I have to, please, this must not sound that way, but I believe that this is not true. No. I believe the Rich Young Ruler would have known that. The Rich Young Ruler should have given away his money because it stood in the way of his relationship with God. Exactly. The rich man does not pass through the eye of a needle, why? Yes, because something stands in his way, because he has something to which he submits more than to God. And the statement is that you should focus on God. Exactly. You must not let anything else come in, but you do not have to, that is not the only way, becoming poor. You could theoretically also understand being rich as meaning that you should focus on God. Exactly, it does not matter how much money you have in your account, it matters where your focus lies. And if you have a lot of money, then you have a lot of money to lose. Yes. And that is the pivot point, then your focus is on not losing this money. Yes, yes, absolutely. But I do not believe that this is the key for everyone. No. This is often used in this way, so often we take these passages that justify suffering people or that somehow also receive a faith that entails carrying a certain cross. Take up your cross and suffer. The transfer is then to everyone. Yes. And that does not look right to you, we must all become poor in order to be able to believe. Yes. Wow, it really sounds almost like Rollstad, but I simply do not believe that this is true. No, it is not true. The selection of the text is that you must not focus on being rich. Yes. For example, you have such a woman, a minimalist, who says, well, they are so proud that they, I do not know, only have 30 items, because the things are so indifferent to them. But everywhere they go, that is the first thing they tell. Wow, I only have 30 items. I never tell when I have many items. For me, it is indifferent. Yes. Actually, for a minimalist, it is much less indifferent how many or few items you have. At least for those who build their identity on that, that... So the question is simply, what do you build your identity on? Yes. The Rich Young Ruler built it on the fact that he is rich. So he must let it go. Exactly. But you can also simply not build your identity on that. Yes. How much or little you have, or? Yes. What is your focus, that is the question. But what about this taking up your cross? We are already coming to that, and we see it right now in the New Testament, we do come to situations in which our faith somehow leads to us, I do not know, let us use a biblical word, being a stone of stumbling. Yes. So we come to situations, in the biblical situation of persecution. Yes. We come to situations, yes, here in our German regions, to speak of persecution is probably still difficult. But there are places in the world where it is so. And then to say, nevertheless, faith is important to me, I take this suffering upon myself now, I endure it, because faith stands in the first place. Exactly. And that is again a question of focus. It comes back to the focus again. If you have a lot of money and your focus is still on God, then you can also have a lot of money. If you are poor and your focus is on God, that is good. If you are persecuted and your focus is on God, that is then, and you are persecuted because of it, that is right. But to seek persecution, to be persecuted, to throw away money, in order to throw away the money, there the focus
on the persecution, on the money. That is not what it is about; it is about God. Exactly. Yes, so no one, we do not have to all go to North Korea and build your church, so that we become better Christians. I believe some are perhaps called. Perhaps. And I am not. Yes, that is, they are not, because they are in this persecuting situation, they may already remain, better in Christian faith than I am. Exactly. I simply did not have that situation. Okay, but if I had had it, then it would also have been my calling to remain in the suffering. But we should never try to create suffering in order to prove something to ourselves, not even that. And there we are again with the slide clicking, not even in honor round. Yes. So this taking up one’s cross is often so a, yes, but you really have to do something here or fall into the trap for the church, for the faith, for God. We must take up our cross. Take up your cross and work with. No, that is not how work functions. Work with, if you have a passion for it. Yes. Work with, somehow let us do it well as a community, but creating such an excessive culture of suffering, I also find good. And, and that is the converse, which also frequently happens, we do not need to give praise to our volunteers, office holders, because they suffer for Christ. They do it for their faith. Total nonsense. Every person deserves praise and needs praise, and especially when they work with and contribute. And there is this, this passage that is often quoted, where Jesus says, yes, if you are seen by people and then expect praise, then you have already received your reward. And then you will not receive it in heaven anymore. And that is then often quoted. But I consider it a false exegesis to do it that way. I believe it is again a question of focus. It is again a question of focus. Yes, I do it because I want Gisela from the church council to praise me, or do I do it because I am of the opinion that God is of the opinion that this is just good right now. Yes. And Gisela praises too. Then she is also with. Yes. That is cool, moistens me, yes. She may also. And it is also right. Yes. So I have never been afraid when someone says, Frank, I think you are doing a great job. I have never internally contracted and said, ah, now I will not receive praise in heaven. Yes, now run, Frank. But sometimes I catch myself doing it. I do not know if you know that, that I think so, oh God, I am doing this now so that you find it good, because I still have such a beat concern open. So sometimes I really catch myself, how I try to come in with such a condition. Yes, so up top you throw doing in, down bottom comes out. Exactly. And then I recognize myself at some point or actually always directly, that I then sit there and think, ah, because you thought that now, it will no longer be clear. And I feel so, ah, you know, then I usually do it anyway and help and am a good guy. But yes, I catch myself no longer doing it, that I am somehow of the opinion, this must now be complained about. I have now done so much for it. Yes. But that... I have now invested there, now God must somehow also take his part in it. Yes. No. Yes. So I find, I do find that one can make a certain claim on God, if he calls one, that he then also carries one in this calling. Yes, fully. So. And he does that too. My experience is that where I am called, many doors open. I am carried in many places. That does not mean that everything always runs as I imagine it. Usually not. But I am carried in what I do. I do not know if you experience it that way too. But it is... Yes, fully. I am carried, but that delays...
So, no, that does not spare me. That is supposed to be... Exactly. It does not necessarily spare me from the harshness of summer. That can be exhausting sometimes. And clearly. And not every prayer will be answered, just because you are in suffering, that is, because you put yourself into suffering for God. Exactly. There is no correlation there. Exactly. So. No karma correlation. Karma correlation. Exactly. So a karma correlation is when you... When you do good and then good things happen to you. Or when you do bad, then bad things happen to you. That is the idea of a karma correlation. That is actually the idea that my grandmother or every grandmother... My thesis is that every grandmother thinks that. So if you are listening right now and you are just a grandmother and you do not think that, please contact us. Exactly. My grandmother always used to say to me, oh, what have I done, that the Lord now believes that he always has this karma correlation... That is a karma correlation. Why was I so bad, that God now punishes me like this? Or did I do so well, that God now finally... You can also offer a prayer here. The here-problem. The here-problem, yes. Exactly. Where, so to speak, someone who has actually done nothing suffers. Yes. So. And for that, I think, when we talk about suffering, we must also resist, right

Ja, also da ist viel Erfahrung. Also weiß man, ich meine. Genau. Wie seelisch du bist. Ja. Du musst dein Leid also gar nicht so schlimm finden. Ja. Also genau. Also wer soll das lesen? Ja. Genau. Ja. Wie viel oder wenig du hast, oder? Ja. So. Also nee,
