Mindfulness – the conscious awareness of one's spouse's feelings and needs – is the key to peacefully resolving marital problems and achieving the inner peace in marriage that God intends.

Mindfulness means – for man and woman alike – perceiving and understanding the feelings, thoughts, and needs of one's spouse.

The text is a Friday sermon by DITIB from 11.10.2024 on the topic of consciously dealing with marital problems. It begins with a Quranic verse about Mawaddah and Rahmah between people and a Hadith about the best spouses. The core message is that mindfulness – that is, the conscious awareness of one's partner's feelings, thoughts, and needs – helps to peacefully resolve marital problems. The text advises recognizing one's own emotional reactions, actively addressing problems, and seeking professional help when needed. DITIB has declared October 10 as 'Week of Liberation from Sadness, Sorrow, and Suffering' and plans workshops on the topic in some mosques. The sermon closes with a prayer for peace, tranquility, and health for families.

And He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed, in that are signs for a people who reflect. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Conscious dealing with our problems in marriage" (11.10.2024) Dear brothers and sisters! Marriage is the free decision of a man and a woman to lead a life together. This decision creates an extremely close bond between two people, in which mutual love, respect, and mercy should take first place. A loving and at the same time respectful manner of dealing is essential, for only through these qualities can the spouses find the inner peace to which the Quran points in the following verse: "And among His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them…" [1] One of the goals of marriage is that the spouses together find inner peace. Nevertheless, it is a reality of life that problems sometimes arise in marriage. Therefore, I would like to address an important concept in my sermon today that facilitates dealing with these problems: mindfulness. Dear believers! Mindfulness means – for man and woman – perceiving and understanding the feelings, thoughts, and needs of one's spouse. It is about becoming aware of the inner world of the spouse and building a bridge between this and our own inner world. Through this awareness, the spouses can shape their relationship in a mature and responsible manner and manage their feelings appropriately. They do not react to problems with anger, shouting, or violence, but with calm composure. In contrast, spouses who are not aware of the other's needs have difficulty building healthy communication and understanding the other's feelings. This endangers family harmony and makes it impossible to achieve inner peace. So how should we act? To keep our marriage on a solid foundation, it is first important to recognize our own emotional reactions and needs. This step lays the foundation for better understanding the feelings of our partner. In addition, we should, instead of ignoring existing problems, actively address them and tackle them with reason, patience, and a solution-oriented attitude. Here it is crucial that we treat each other with understanding, love, and mercy. If necessary, we can also seek professional help. Finally, we should carry the wise words of our beloved Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in our hearts and strive to be the best spouses, for he says: "The best among you are those who are best to their families." [2] Dear congregation! With the aim of fulfilling such an important purpose, we as DITIB have designated October 10, World Mental Health Day, and the associated week as "Def-i Gam," that is, as the "Week of Liberation from Sadness, Sorrow, and Suffering." In this context, we will this year in some mosques in various cities, under the theme "Methods for Coping with Sorrow and Suffering in Marriage," discuss the method of mindfulness. With the help of experts whom we have trained in this field, we will work together with our members and interested parties on the significance of mindfulness in the family. May Allah grant our families peace, our hearts tranquility, our souls health, and our bodies well-being, and make us good Muslims. The DITIB Sermon Commission [1] Rum, 30/21.
