The Bundeswehr uses liberal identity politics as a recruitment strategy to legitimize its military function while maintaining structural discrimination and queerphobia internally.
The text is an excerpt from a podcast episode in which the moderators and guests discuss the current military situation, the reintroduction of conscription, and the role of the Bundeswehr. One guest, a former reserve officer and trans person, describes their personal experiences in the military and criticizes institutional queerphobia as well as the use of identity politics as a recruitment strategy ('rainbowwashing'). Another guest, a Marxist, positions themselves against pacifism and refers to historical revolutions. The discussion highlights the tension between left-wing criticism of militarization and the pragmatic view of violence as a craft. It is addressed how the military presents itself as diverse while structural discrimination persists. The participants reflect on how the societal attitude toward the Bundeswehr and war in Germany has changed.

I heard that today we are talking about war. Great. Hello and welcome to Queer Rock-Crisis. With a new episode, this time featuring Mina and Jin. You already know Jin. You don’t know Mina, even though she has been actively involved for a long time and does very important educational work. And now in the Network for Violence Protection. Very important work. We need to talk about that again sometime. I also have several questions about that. But today we want to talk about war. And how we, as Queers and as Leftists, deal with it when an invasion takes place, when militarization occurs in our country, when conscription is introduced, when weapons production is increased and exported to wars, what kind of panic this brings about in society, and how we should respond to it. And we have different positions at the table. On one hand, we have a Marxist and perhaps pacifist position. As a Marxist, I am definitely not a pacifist. I think it’s good to clarify that beforehand... The revolution is not peaceful, is it? Well, one could have a pacifist revolution. The revolution is not a children’s birthday party. The revolution is certainly not a children’s birthday party. But if we look at which peaceful revolutions exist, two come to mind immediately: first, 1989/90, though one might consider whether that was a counter-revolution, and second, 1917, a revolution that surprisingly took place peacefully. All the violent nonsense and the intervention of international imperialism. But the October Revolution itself was surprisingly peaceful. I always want to emphasize that at this point. She means that in Russia? Yes. There were also a few more revolutions in 1917. That’s correct. Or rather, they joined in 1918. Came along later, as I recall the name. If I refer to it as the October Revolution, I indeed mean the October Revolution. That’s a point of contention. Did you really do that? Okay, fair. And Jin has a very biographical relationship to this. We haven’t addressed that very often until now. But Jin started her transition as an officer in the Federal Armed Forces. That didn’t happen, did it? No. Let’s clarify. Fake news. Exactly, fake news, sorry. But I do actually have a... ...intimate relationship, unfortunately, with this institution of our country. I actually belong to the generation that still performed military service. And yes, I was a reserve officer. And I have continued to engage very strongly with this topic and have grappled with it. And accordingly, I also... This strikes me very, very strongly, especially in left-wing spaces. I simply have a pragmatic, craft-oriented perspective, to put it that way, on war as a craft or as work involving violence. Hmm, yes, that’s roughly the perspective. I would say, formerly engaged in work involving violence. And indeed also from the perspective of... I have actually been in Ukraine in my life. Or rather, I was a war correspondent. I was in Palestine and Ukraine. We have probably both heard about that from the news. So, I don’t just have this idea that we somehow have to do things a certain way, but I actually have the experience. I was trained by the Federal Armed Forces, but I have experience as a civilian, specifically as a photojournalist, in war. But that might be an interesting point. What year were you born? 1989. I am part of this peaceful generation. As someone born in 1993, due to a scheduling conflict with a theater performance, I was unable to attend my original draft appointment. I just managed to slip through because the replacement appointment they sent me fell at a time when conscription was temporarily suspended. That means I narrowly avoided it by about two weeks. What year were you born, actually? Did you
Did you actually also include the nonsense? I am 20 years old and I have never felt compelled to worry about it. Okay. To build on that a bit further, I actually have a very interesting perspective, because my active service period was from July 2009 to the end of July 2011. And from July 1, 2011 onwards, there was no more conscription. I was there exactly at that time. And I have us ... A fun fact is also one of the positions where relatively little has shifted for me, but society has changed very drastically. And I have also actually therefore a lot of very harsh ... Or simply also a lot of clear criticism of the new ... If we want to go directly into it now, the new conscription law simply also comes along. Mhm. So, that is ... I think, I sometimes come across a bit strangely here, because it was simply such a taken-for-granted reality for me as well. And it is also quite such a ... So, I come from a household or rather from a region where I definitely would not have had to. But I wanted to leave. Were you a true believer? No, I would not say that. I know that the two options for gay people in the rural areas in the Red States are that they either go to study or join the military. So ... There are only two kinds of people ... There are only two kinds of people from Texas. Years and queers, and you don't look like a seer to me. Um ... No, actually it was like this, that I simply ... I wanted to leave, I had to leave. And ... I did not manage to organize that at the same time. I thought to myself, maybe it is a good idea to have consequences in life and to perceive them. And so after a few months it was like, okay, they feed you here, they clothe you here, they do not expect you to think, you are in good order, to take a few thoughts for yourself about what you want to do in your life. It has changed a few times since then, but ... So, I see it, I actually reflect on this time very critically. We have been talking a lot in the media lately about conscription and talk to your sons about what it is like for Germany ... to serve. And then videos are shown of people running around with some backpacks and starting to cry because of it, and learning a lesson about themselves. But also such a blatant whitewashing of it. So, I thought, the era of liberal identity politics as a hegemonic project is completely over. Nevertheless, despite this impressive, astonishing level of good-looking young women, women on social media, who are like, hey, we are totally diverse in the troops, come join our troops. And actually also a rainbowwashing of killing and dying for Germany. How did you experience that in real life? Yes, let's put it this way, you just mentioned that the times of liberal identity politics are over. I actually believe that the Bundeswehr or rather very many ... I would actually tailor that to European militaries earlier, so until before Trump or under Biden, it was still quite similar. Also here again briefly, I actually dealt with this in the media during my studies, so propaganda and so on and so forth. And I would simply say very clearly that the military has discovered liberal identity politics for itself and also noticed, hey, that is actually something not so bad at all, because we actually need a diverse military. And we need ... That is the problem. How many ... How many cannon fodder versus how much ... actually capable material, so human material, do we have and do we need and must we deploy here? That is the logic and utilization logic of the military. That this can work, we see in other high-functioning militaries like the IDF, AIOF, which as the most demoralized media world even has its own course for people with disabilities and which is very successful
incorporates identity politics. Yes, in every case. This does not necessarily stand for the actual moral claim of an army that is currently committing a genocide. But as a recruitment strategy, it works perfectly well. Definitely. And the Bundeswehr is also, I think, relatively ... So, they are completely ... Relatively little has changed there. They, as I said, also follow this very strongly. And it is this thing ... They are still quite involved in it. But how did you feel as a queer person in the Bundeswehr? Well, one must say that the Bundeswehr made me a man. I was extremely square when I joined and then became ... It is always this very peculiar ... I can remember how I became a man. And ... I have a real perspective. My perspective then ... I am not sure whether I would say that I was truly in the military as a queer person. I was indeed in reserve services there again ... in a very early stage of queerness. Um ... But I also had my first homosexual experiences there. So, yes, no, so ... Feeling comfortable ... So, twelve years ago, twelve, twelve years ago, it was definitely not ... What you are describing is ultimately that you did have experiences, but that it was actually not possible for you to develop an identity around that. Because your identity was very clearly officer or ... German. ... I would not necessarily say that either. But no, I was trained as an officer. That means, leader, judge, and father of my men. So, that is also quite gay ... Um ... But don't make it sexual. And that is ... So, the Bundeswehr as asexual, state-bearing, polycur per unit. Fun fact, for the third gender for me in the Bundeswehr was soldier, because it was so ... So ... That is a completely different topic, we have to do an episode about it sometime. The Röhm episode. No, no, we do not call it the Röhm episode. Um ... But ... The Night of the Long Knives does not come if you plethone climate it. The Night of the Long Knives comes in the UfD-Kabuf. Ah! Um ... No, I ... As I said, I also look at ... I am also quite involved in this world, or also look at and ... I know that this situation has definitely improved. But I would definitely not see it as ... that there is a queer army, or that there is an army in which it is accepted. When I ... that was actually ... that was five, six years ago, so during Covid ... this army is a reflection ... quite a reflection of society. And that includes queerphobia and all the other fun. So, it is still ... There is still racism. There is still queerphobia. There are still right-wing networks. I think they are actually a bit more prevalent there than in the rest of society. Say so! Would you say, so, you said they are still ... Do you think it is conceivable that they will no longer be there at some point? Because I also have the feeling that this queer hostility also belongs to this system. So ... Or rather, I think that is also something ... You just spoke about what is so ... the discovery of ... Rainbow-Washing as a recruitment and image strategy. I mean, let us look at one of ... Or if I even take the most militaristic party in the German Parliament, Alliance 90/The Greens, who still massively display their highly militarized homo-nationalism. And at the same time, what the concrete outcomes of their policy and practice are. I think Rainbow-Washing does not exclude at all. For example, massive structural transphobia. It does not exclude at all that this ... How do you call that? Classification into a nationalist,
the militarized “we” along racist, abolitionist transmissugenic and other fault lines that are already socially present, and which are, so to speak, the weakest children. So, this self-proclaimed rainbow-washed, German or European, militarized “we” will necessarily occur through the exclusion of those who are, so to speak, not fit for defense, who are in alternative civilian service, and who are anti-communist, always being necessary. And ... I mean, in the ... so-called Self-Determination Act, we see that, for example, transfemininity is perceived as a major danger, and the fear of the destruction of military force through certification is something that is essentially present even in rainbow-washed, militarized self-conceptions. So, what I believe ... so, a few points. So, yes ... I would not completely endorse everything you say, but I would, I think, certainly go along with the tone. Point one, Euro-homonationalism, yes ... certainly. So, this is indeed something that is embedded in the German, or in the European-German identity, and it does not go away. See also Geert Wilders in the Netherlands. A point that I also find interesting with such a look at trans perspectives, not necessarily as a path or something in that direction. But ... ironically, the Bundeswehr is the only institution of the German state that has clarified its role regarding discrimination under Paragraph 175. Fun fact, this was initiated by Ursula von der Leyen. And the Bundeswehr actually also has a ... so a reparation fund for that. I do not know to what extent it was really ... pinkwashing or something else, but I cannot imagine that it simply arose from ... from the goodness of their hearts. At the same time, and that is the next point, I believe that the good standard by which one can repeatedly see how it looks there, especially with regard to trans perspectives, is that she is, as it were, a biefang. By her own admission, formerly ... Commander in Storco. Now in the most trans-coded basic area of the Bundeswehr, namely ZIR, i.e., Cyber Information Space. We can also talk about that topic again, what else. But she was ... She was held very high for a very long time, also very much in the front row, simply liked to parade around. So this, hey, we are also very inclusive, etc. etc. I do not know if it is from the Bundes ... My impression is that it is from the Bundeswehr ... So mutual or bilateral consent is what she no longer does. And at the latest since Biefang was reprimanded for her frivolity on Tinder, also by the Federal Administrative Court, and the 1950s were called upon and wanted their values back. Female soldiers may not have sexuality if it does not relate to Germany. No, they may have it. They do not have to stand on the world. I only sleep with Germany. No, that is ... That is a bit sharply formulated, but ... Fine. No, the problem here, I believe, is indeed that she is ... very clearly ... So, how was it? In an open relationship and is looking for sex. And this was seen as a violation of Paragraph 18 of the Soldier in a codified duty of good conduct. Because ... One can certainly expect of German officers that they are monogamous. So, if one cannot even expect that they are gay or queer, then at least monogamous. Good, bourgeois sexuality is monogamous, family-oriented. And even if they are not because of heterosexuals, it is at least culturally heterosexual. I do not know a perspective as a Marxist-Leninist on monogamy. But the frivolities and the freedom of the queer community are indeed, I would certainly
to say, an essential component of our lives. I hold that view somewhat in agreement with Alexandra Collon-Thay, even though I would certainly argue with her on other points. But the freedom of sexuality and love is a hare’s goal in the direction of communism. But I find it, I believe, not entirely insignificant at this point, because ideologically it becomes quite evident here, regarding how military sexuality should look or how military relationship formation should look. Also looking a bit at the material aspect, what is the character of the Bundeswehr as a bourgeois army of a bourgeois class state? That is, it is not simply the case that within the Bundeswehr, in the clear air, any ideologies arise regarding how sexuality should look. Rather, it is a bourgeois army for enforcing the interests that the bourgeois nation-state embodies. LVBV. And the ... what? That is simply ... Man, have you not properly absorbed your good Bundeswehr propaganda? I have not regularly consumed Bundeswehr propaganda ... I would have expected more from you. I have not. Great, great. LVBV is what the Bundeswehr calls its core mandate, to which it is now returning again, that is the one concerning value-orientation. LV, territorial defense, BV and ... Ah, okay, good, LVBV. In any case, it is always said that it is about territorial defense in the sense of defending a national value. First of all, it is a geological window dressing for the fact that the state, in its ruling, governing function, is first and foremost an instrument of enforcement and power of the dominant capital interests, which are organized nationally. And accordingly, it is naturally not surprising that, similar to how the police serves as a tool for enforcing property relations internally, the military serves to enforce property relations or property claims externally. What this means in the end is that the Bundeswehr, even in its pink-washed, but ultimately still bourgeois-liberal variants, is nevertheless not outside a bourgeois ideology as a bourgeois army of a bourgeois state. And accordingly, it is then naturally not surprising that one sees, in that sense, such an upholding of a bourgeois sexual, family, and desire norm, in terms of monogamy, in terms of the image of the troops, which must take place within a bourgeois morality. If you are queer, then in a way that functions culturally as heterosexual, quasi. Gay, but in heterosexual ... Yes, I mean, it is the same as marriage for all on the domestic political level, is on the level of foreign policy representation, gay, but in ... I know, just ... Moral heterosexual soldier. I was just at the demonstration for the preservation of the friend on Olga’s in Kuferschenstraße, where the street prostitution is currently being gentrified. And at the same time, the demonstration of the residents’ movement took place, which ... a ... together with the CDU a ... a ... ban on sex work in all of Berlin demands. Mhm. And there I ... So, they all came over to us to stare and gawk. Then I thought, as I always do when people behave strangely towards me against me, I mirror their behavior. And I simply walked over, made strange gawking and photos of them. Um ... And then I was approached by such a gay couple, uh, who told me that ... That was really the counter-wall, that was such a meme. That was so cool. Such a gay couple, they have now bought an apartment there, in such a new building. And they then told me that in the Basic Law ... the protection of property is stated. And that on account of that ... the street prostitution must go away. Because they are being harassed here. Someone defecated in the entrance hall. And, um ... these
People are all shocked; they don’t do it voluntarily, it’s all human trafficking, so you can just ... talk a lot about their class position ... They don’t just pay rent, they own the building entrance. What do you say? You know, this gay couple comes along and says, the Basic Law guarantees the protection of property. Really, I have ... self-exposure is real. Absolutely spot on. I then ... I asked them if they were married. They said, no, why do you ask? We’re just together, and I said ... Yeah, just typical CDU fags, I don’t know. And then they sort of said, CDU ... No, we’re actually for the Greens. Ha-ha-ha. Of course. Yes, let’s put it this way, the Greens, or rather ... I would say, this is the classic case of ... having learned nothing from Stonewall, except that it’s a party. So ... Yes, and you ... You completely failed to understand what Gay Liberation is. You take the fighting stance we have maintained, accept it all nicely, and rejoice that you are emancipated. But you don’t give a thought to the trans women who are still being thrown out of their homes in Hungary and who now engage in sex work there as prostitutes. And then they are Green voters. You have to just say it bluntly. Whoever currently, I say, puts themselves on the street for the Green Party or cheers for it, is simply voting for the most militaristic party in Germany, which the AfD is trying to outflank from the right by saying, the AfD are worse patriots than we are. Alliance 90, the olive greens, stand there and say, our patriotism, our readiness to defend, our “we” for Europe, as ... perhaps also needs to be said. The EU is not simply a neutral confederation of states, but rather the interest, the capital interest, the hegemonic interest of Germany in the

Welcher Jahrgang bist du eigentlich so? Mhm. Also ... There are only two kinds of people ... There are only two kinds of people from Texas. Years and queers, and you don't look like a seer to me. Ja, in jedem Fall. Also, ja, nee, also ... But don't make it sexual. Und das ist ... Also, Bundeswehr als A-Sexual, staatsstragender, Polycure pro Einheit. Also ... Also ... Also, was glaube ich ... also, paar Punkte. Also, ja ... Ihres Zeichens ehemals ... Kommandierende in Storco. LVBV. Great, great. Gay, but in heterosexual ...
