Whoever is entrusted by God with a mission must justify the trust placed in them through faithful stewardship and guardianship; the Church is founded on the rock of the confession of faith and thereby remains steadfast.
The responsibility of Peter recalls the first reading, in which the prophet Isaiah reminds us that to the one to whom the keys are entrusted, a mission is assigned: to administer and to guard.
The text is a liturgical exegesis of the readings for the 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle A) and thematically connects them around trust, mission, and confession of faith. The first reading from Isaiah 22 is interpreted as an oracle concerning two stewards who abuse the trust placed in them through enrichment and unfaithfulness and are therefore stripped of their dignity. Psalm 137 is described as a hymn of praise to the eternal mercy of God. Romans 11 is interpreted as a hymn to the unfathomable mystery of God, who does not reject his people. The Gospel of Matthew 16 is expounded as Peter's confession and as the foundation of the Church on the rock, with the key metaphor linked to the first reading. The text also contains an introductory monition that thematizes prayer for incarcerated persons and their families in the Archdiocese of Bogotá. Finally, practical impulses are formulated: to share one's faith, to answer the question 'Who am I for you?' and to situate proclamation between hostility and hospitality.

Reading from the book of Isaiah 22,19-23 I place the key of the palace of David on his shoulders
In whom do people believe and place their entire trust? In those whom they know. Trust is placed in those in whom there is certainty and faith that they will act correctly, in those to whom great or small responsibilities are delegated. The Prophet Isaiah, in his first book, and particularly in the section of the so-called oracles, takes advantage of an event that occurred in the palace of King Hezekiah to show readers an antithesis of what infidelity is as a betrayal of trust, but also uses part of what happened to invite the people to remain faithful, to hope and to believe in God, whose mercy is displayed.
This biblical text is presented in the form of an oracle, a divine response that reaches people through the prophets or priests, and it recounts the case of two stewards, one a foreigner, Shebna, and the other from the people, Eliakim, son of Hilkiah. Both were clothed with the robe and the cloak, symbols of prestige, and the keys to the royal gate were placed in their hands, a sign of responsibility, power, and trust. However, blinded, they turned their hearts away, allowing them to be corrupted by power and wealth. Shebna accumulated goods and built a majestic mausoleum using property that did not belong to him; Eliakim, who was expected to be a firm nail in the door of his master, enriched himself along with those of his household, betraying the trust placed in him, as indicated in the passage that follows this text. Their behavior and mismanagement lead to them being stripped of their royal dignity, falling into the disrepute of those into whose hands nothing can be placed, of those in whom neither the minimum nor the maximum can be trusted, in whose hands a key cannot be placed. It is trust and faith that the prophet expects as the response of the people blessed and accompanied by God.
Psalm 137 R/. Lord, your mercy is eternal, do not abandon the work of your hands
Although it is recited in the manner of a psalm, the reader is faced with a wonderful hymn of praise directed to God, in which the fulfillment of the word and liberation are remembered. It is expressed in thanksgiving in the liturgy of the temple, recalling the benefits received by the people, from the small to the great, from the kings to the prophets, because the mercy of the Lord is eternal.
Reading from the letter of the apostle Saint Paul to the Romans 11, 33-35 From him, through him, and for him.
Although to the eyes it may seem a small fragment of the letter that Paul addresses to the community of Rome, it is a profound text in which a great concern is expressed and pointed out: the rejection of Jesus, who is not recognized as the Savior. It is not easy for the community to contemplate the face of the Savior from the incomprehensible decisions and from the inappreciable figures in which a complex path is read and one is invited to live and assume a mystery. It is faith, that certainty which knows and leads the believer to a full trust and a profound encounter with Christ, who has a face and whom one follows.
Although the text is part of the conclusion of the passage in which it is argued how God does not reject his people, it closes in the manner of a hymn, a link that unites and invites to an unfathomable contemplation of God, to whom glory is given, who exists, who is everything, who is awaited and professed in the experience of faith. It is a passage that leads to inquiring how to believe without having faith and how to follow without trusting.
Reading of the holy gospel according to Saint Matthew 16, 13-20 On this rock I will build my Church
The path traveled in these last two Sundays has confronted the experience of the faith of Peter and the disciples, who, in the midst of the storm, see Jesus as a ghost, revealing that there is still a lack of depth in the experience of following and an ignorance of the mission of the one who has called them. In contrast, the face of a Canaanite woman emerges, who, without having traveled the road with Jesus, recognizes and professes him as the Son of David, from a simple and profound faith that leads her to contemplate the healing of her daughter who was tormented by an evil spirit.
Today’s passage shows the return of Jesus and his disciples to Galilee, after having been in the region of Tyre and Sidon. Although it does not appear in the account, on the road of return a confrontation arises with the Pharisees and the Sadducees who ask for signs.
Probably this is the reason why Jesus and his disciples take the road that crosses the region of Caesarea Philippi, a region of beautiful landscapes, of lush green, bathed by the springs where the Jordan River is born. In that region, near Mount Hermon, Philip, son of King Herod, built magnificent palaces and a great city. There too was built the sanctuary to a Greek god called Pan, adored by the shepherds who came to a singular cult in which, to the sound of flutes, the goats danced and, in the midst of offerings and songs, asked for prosperous flocks and good offspring.
It is in this region where, while traveling the road, Jesus poses questions to his companions of the journey: “Who does the people say the Son of Man is?” and “Who do you say I am?” Jesus wants to inquire what his disciples have heard and what the people say about him. The answer does not keep them waiting; some identify Jesus with John the Baptist, considered a man of strong words, of a direct preaching, the one who has prepared the way to the Messiah Savior; others identify him with
4 Elijah, that prophet who fought against idolatry and injustice; others compare him with Jeremiah, who called for the practice of a cult pleasing to the Lord, avoiding the cultic celebration of empty practices; for others, simply, he is one of many prophets, like so many who had arisen in that land.
From the answers to Jesus’ question, it is deduced that it is easy, quick, and moving to narrate or give reason for the faith experience of others, but now the question arises that confronts faith, where it will be seen if the path traveled and the deeds lived, along with the words heard, have borne the expected fruit. It is here where it is appreciated if the foundations that are in the heart of the disciples are solid, it is here where contemplation finds sense and companionship and listening to the Master find value: and who am I for you. Contrary to the opinions that arise from the first question, now it seems that a great silence rises over them, is there nothing to say? Is there not an experience to narrate? Where has remained what has been seen, what has been heard? Is it that one does not know whom one follows? Peter, who in the lake asked to walk on the water and proved his faith, is the one who raises his voice to proclaim: “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God!” It seems that this profound profession of faith is born in the heart of Peter, but it is the gift of God, placed in his mouth, that makes him blessed.
In the face of Peter’s recognition of Jesus’ messianism, the text takes a turn; now it is Jesus who recognizes the task and mission of Simon, whom he identifies as petros (stone), and to the Church built upon the petra (rock). The figure of the rock was conceived in the Old Testament as the presence of the strong God in whom faith and justice were built. (Gen 49:2, 32:1; Ps 18; Is 51:1). A Church founded on the rock will not be destroyed; it will face strong winds, ideological stances, scandals, doubts regarding the experiences of faith on the part of the believers themselves, shaken by the waves of indifference and lack of commitment, by the lack of faith of many, but nothing will defeat it. Peter’s responsibility recalls the first reading, in which the prophet Isaiah reminds us that to whom the keys are entrusted assumes a mission: to administer and to care. The invitation to Peter and to the disciples is to be guarantors of the entry of the brothers into the solidity of faith, which is why it is necessary to carry the key that opens the door and the locks of unbelief. At the end of the text, Jesus forbids that anything be said to anyone about his messianism, until the time in which the mission is fulfilled.
It would be worthwhile, in the face of this reflection, to return again and again to the question: “And who am I for you?” What answer would be given. The Christian of today has an experience of faith to narrate to his brothers, who, in need of the testimony of the believers, build their faith upon the rock. What must be said to the world? It is clear that one must know the Lord better in order to follow him, for one does not follow whom one does not know, and one does not know whom one does not love.
6
• It is important not to lose the sense around the experience of faith that has been manifesting itself over the past Sundays from the lived experience of the disciples and the Canaanite woman.
• To provide keys for growing in the experience of faith, which is questioned and which one is invited to share, so that others, starting from the mature testimony of those who have walked the path, find in their particular way of life the seeds of hope that encourage them to believe.
• It is important to remember that on the path of following, one can fall into the temptation of not being aware of whom one follows and what is the mission to which he invites, so the insistence lies in answering the question: “And who am I for you?”
• To remember how every action that entails the preaching of the Kingdom moves between the hostility of those who close the door and the hospitality of those who receive the message, so faith must be founded on the firm rock.

Entrance Antiphon Dear brothers and sisters, today we join in solidary prayer for our country, placing in the hands of the Lord the life of all who suffer. Furthermore, we bring to this celebration the reality of persons deprived of their liberty and their families, recognizing their dignity as children of God.
As the Archdiocese of Bogotá, we accompany this periphery with the presence of Priests, Deacons, and Volunteers, who day by day carry the message of love and hope to the prisons, and give themselves through the service and accompaniment of those who need it most.
Let us prepare ourselves to live with joy our Eucharistic celebration.
Antiphon to the Readings
The readings of today invite us to contemplate the mysterious designs of God, who calls and chooses those to whom he entrusts the mission of guiding his people. In a special way, we contemplate the election of Peter, constituted by Christ as the visible stone upon which he builds his Church, and to whom he hands over the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Let us listen.

Prayer of the Faithful
Presider: Brothers and sisters, let us raise our petitions to the Lord, trusting that his love and mercy always hear the cry of his people. To each petition we join in saying:
R/: Lord, help us to be Samaritans on the road.
1. For the Church, mother and caregiver, present in so many existential peripheries, so that her mission may remain among those who need it most, carrying the message of Christian love.
2. For the people and the national government, so that we may continue to be a witness amidst pain and human vulnerability.
3. For those who commit themselves as good Samaritans on the road to accompany and make their presence felt in the midst of the peripheries, particularly the evangelizing volunteers in the penitentiary field.
4. For persons deprived of their liberty and their families, so that the Lord may grant them the necessary strength amidst their reality.
5. For those most affected by the recent earthquake in Colombia, so that our solidarity may assist them and sow in them hope in the face of the trial.
President: Hear, Father, our prayers, you who gave us Jesus Christ as Messiah and Lord. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
9 FINAL PRAYER PROPOSALS (This prayer is suggested to be recited at the end of the Eucharist)
Lord Jesus, you who know human pain, loneliness, and suffering, look with love upon those who today live deprived of their liberty.
Enter their hearts with your peace, strengthen their hope, and remind them each day that they remain your beloved children.
Heal the wounds of the past, comfort those who feel forgotten, and open new paths of reconciliation and dignified life.
Bless also their families, those who accompany them, and all who work in the penitentiary centers.
May faith never be lacking, nor the opportunity to start anew.
Mary, Mother of mercy, accompany with your tenderness each person deprived of their liberty. Amen.
10 Twenty-First Sunday of Ordinary Time Cycle A August 23
1. Accompanying The followers and those closest to Jesus have lived many things with him and have seen his works. Therefore, one might think that they know him well and have completely understood his mission. However, the answers are varied and confusing (John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah, one of the prophets). In short: they do not know who Jesus is.
Today the same thing happens with many people (not only with Jesus): we do not know who the other person is or what to think of what they do. This can lead us to confusion, because we may take for good people who are not, or distance ourselves from good people because people say things that are not true.
What should we pay attention to so as not to be confused?
2. Motivating “Who do people say that I am?” (Mt 16:15). This is the fundamental question, the most important one: who is Jesus for me? Who is Jesus in my life? … Peter’s answer could be summarized in one word: following. Peter lived in the following of the Lord. “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God” (Mt 16:16). That answer is the fruit of a journey. Only after having lived the fascinating adventure of following the Lord, after having walked with Him and in pursuit of Him for so long, does Peter reach that spiritual maturity which, by grace, leads him to such a lucid profession of faith.
In fact, the evangelist Matthew himself tells us that it all began one day when, on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, Jesus passed by and called him, together with his brother Andrew, and “immediately, they left their nets and followed him” (Mt 4:20). Peter left everything to follow the Lord. (cf. Homily of Pope Francis, June 29, 2023)
11 3. Challenging The challenge consists in listening to the voice of God the Father, who reveals to us many important things, among them who He is and who is His Son. Jesus trusts that each one of us will recognize Him in the same way that the apostle Peter did, who was attentive to what the Spirit of God told him within and did not hesitate to say:
“You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
Peter did not answer Jesus’s question based on the rumors of the people, but based on what he lived and learned with him, allowing himself to be guided by the Spirit of God.
• Can I recognize Jesus in the same way that the apostle Peter did?
• Do I identify Jesus as my best friend, as a brother, as a teacher?
Remember:
As children, we have that close person whom we consider a friend; we know what they like to eat, what their favorite game is, the clothes they like to wear. Therefore, this week I will write them a letter expressing gratitude for their friendship, and I will share with them what I like most about Jesus.
12 Entrance Monition Let us celebrate with joy this Sunday encounter, where the Word of God reminds us that He has chosen each of us for a special purpose, just as He did with Jesus.
Let us open our hearts to receive His mercy and let us live this moment with gratitude and hope, knowing that we are called to walk together in His love.
Monition to the Readings The readings we will hear today help us to cultivate faith and place at the center the question that Jesus asks of his disciples, and which He also directs to us today, so that we may reflect on whether the path of our faith retains dynamism and vitality, whether the flame of the relationship with the Lord is still burning. Let us listen.
1 Cf. Leo XIV - Homily on the Solemnity of the Apostles Saint Peter and Saint Paul, June 29, 2025
13 Prayer of the Faithful
Presider: Trusting in the love of our loving Father, let us ask that, through Jesus Christ, His beloved Son, He may hear and grant our petitions. Let us say with faith:
R./ Good Father, hear us.
1. For Pope Leo, that his words and actions may announce to humanity that Jesus is the Son of the living God. Let us pray.
2. For all humanity, which endures various realities of pain, that in the midst of them they may discover Jesus as their Savior. Let us pray.
3. For the boys and girls of our Archdiocese of Bogotá who suffer from loneliness and illness, that Jesus, the good friend, may protect their lives, accompany them in their pain, and be their safe refuge. Let us pray.
4. For ourselves, that, following the example of Peter, we may confess that Jesus is the Son of God and open our hearts to welcome Him as Lord of our lives. Let us pray.
Presider: Merciful Father, receive our petitions and bring to a good conclusion your saving work among us. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

(Gn 49,2, 32,1 Sal 18, Is 51,1).

2. Motivar «¿Quién dicen que soy?» (Mt 16,15).
Escuchemos.
