On the Blessing of Serving

Christians should acknowledge their replaceability before God in order to grow beyond the ego, and in doing so trust in the power of the Holy Spirit, which enables them to fulfil all assignments.

When you have done all that you were commanded to do, say, We are unprofitable servants. We have done only what we were obliged to do.

The sermon analyses the parable of the unprofitable servant in Luke 17 in order to correct a modern misunderstanding of humility. The speaker explains that the parable, in its ancient context, describes a normal working relationship, which today is mistakenly read as exploitative. He emphasises that Christians, through the Holy Spirit, have the power to fulfil all of God's assignments, and encourages them to serve with confidence. The seemingly derogatory term 'unprofitable servants' is interpreted as an expression of replaceability that breaks the ego. The central message is that serving is not a means of self-elevation, but a path in which the blessing of God has a share. The text calls for accepting one's own inadequacy without falling into self-deprecation, and instead acting in the certainty of divine companionship.

Welcome to the sermon of FGG Dresden. We wish you a beneficial time. More information about our congregation can be found at dresden.fg.de. This morning, I have written down some thoughts for this sermon, titled "From the Blessing of Service." The warrior has already said this, and if I read you the text I have chosen for this purpose, or which serves as its basis, I will probably surprise you quite a bit. I think this is a truly annoying text. Just reading it could make me angry. And perhaps you feel exactly the same way. Let’s take a look at it, and I have brought a few thoughts on why I still find it so helpful. So, I am reading from Luke 17, starting at verse 7, and I have deliberately chosen the Luther Bible at this point, because I find that, in terms of the sound and wording of the words, this parable is rendered truly excellently. Jesus says, "Who among you has a servant plowing or tending sheep, to whom he would say, 'When he comes in from the field, come here at once and sit down to eat'? Would he not rather say to him, 'Prepare my supper, gird yourself, and serve me while I eat and drink; and after that you may eat and drink'? Does he thank the servant because he did the things that were commanded? So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded to do, say, 'We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we ought to do.'" For me, this parable belongs to what are called "outrage parables." At first glance, it simply hurts when you read this parable. The poor servant, who toils all day, then has to prepare food for his master before he may do anything for himself, and at the end does not even receive an extra thank you. A piece of rubbish, isn't it? So one can get angry about it; can one really treat people like that? That is just impudence. But before you set this parable aside in annoyance, I would like to explain it to you a little more closely, and perhaps one or another perspective will change for you during these explanations. This parable actually describes a rather typical middle-class man of that time in the then-present era. And that is precisely the point why this parable was relatively easy for Jesus' listeners to understand. What Jesus told them, they knew from their daily life. That was what they said, "Yes, of course, that is always quite normal with us." There is no point in elaborating on it. The situation described here was simply totally familiar to them. And this master did not appear to them at all as it might be with us, where we think, "Man, he is quite hard on his employee. One could make that a bit smoother." The people back then did not think that at all when they heard the parable. I think it is already important to first perceive this difference. This man in the parable has farmland. He has livestock, and the whole setup suggests that he has only one single servant. So he is not the big middle-class figure, but simply the one who says, "Yeah, I have a little something, I cannot do it alone. I have my employee for that." The servant's task was initially simply to work the farmland, then to feed the livestock. Quite normal. Everyone thought, "That is how it is." And when he was then finished with both, then, because the master did not have a specific house servant, he simply took care of the little that also came up in the household. One might perhaps understand it that way. And you see, he had quite a lot to do. There is not that little in the household either. In the evening, this man returned to the house from his tasks. And it is not so that his master is harassing him in some way. So one does not even hear that the master says to him, "Where are you coming from now..." first? I certainly sent you off this morning already. The work today was really nothing, none of that. Everything here runs quite smoothly. He comes home. Everything is fine. It is a completely normal employer-employee relationship, as it was customary back then. And since the master has no other servant, it is also quite normal that the servant first goes and prepares dinner for his master. And afterwards, he can also eat. Here too, one does not somehow hear that the servant is then missing something. One might also think, has anyone from my circle of acquaintances ever addressed me in such a way, saying that at our home there are two refrigerators. One with the good stuff for my parents and the other with the not-so-good stuff for us children. Some people have a rather peculiar setup, I would say. So here it is not like that either, there is the good refrigerator, that is for the master the fine steaks, the remoulade sauce, and the fried potatoes. And for the master there is perhaps a few moldy Liberspuller meatballs. So none of that is read. On the contrary, after the master has eaten, he withdraws and the servant can sit at the same table. Eat the same food and drink the same stuff. All okay. So it is also not, in that sense, a two-class economy, that he is perhaps treated poorly as a servant or mistreated or receives bad food. None of that. One has the feeling that the two run like a synchronized chassis. The master has as his tasks to buy livestock, sell grain, and so on. And the servant has as his tasks to feed the livestock, look after the grain, harvest the grain, fill the barn, and in the evening also provide for food. It runs totally smoothly. Because for us, for these conditions back then, for us everything else is anything but normal, I think, we get a bit upset about it. Above all, that he does not receive extra praise. But that was not at all necessary for the servant. Therefore, that is my daily business, that is what I am here for. First the field, then the livestock, then the master. Done, I eat. So there too, it was not that he had the need to be praised extra. Nevertheless, it is of course nice when one praises one’s people once in a while, right? I always say in our congregation, people, when you walk through the congregation, look around and always, whenever you find something to praise, praise it. That is good for the work climate, I find. So, it is not bad that he did not receive it, but it also does not mean that we may not do it. It is indeed nice when we do it. But Jesus says with this that there is now not necessarily an immediate necessity or even a right. Rather, Jesus says, the guy does what he is supposed to do, what he is here for. And with that, everything is fine for now. That is the parable. And perhaps you have to swallow the first time already, but you will swallow much more today, believe me. There is a whole lot more in it. Let us continue. I notice two moments in this parable. The first moment is when Jesus transfers the parable to his people, that is to us, he says first, if you have done all that you were commanded to do. If you have done everything ... There are ... Do you also know Christians who sometimes say, I can do nothing, I am nothing. And everything I do is not enough. So, I always think, next you take the head off and shove it under your arm and so on. So such a ... Why do I say that? That is a misunderstood, humble understanding. Exactly not what the warrior just described. Courage to serve. But ... So, what is written here is first of all, this does not speak for a weak Christianity, but here it is simply said first, if you have done everything that I commanded you have. And that means, you can do it. Jesus trusts you to do it. Jesus says, I give you assignments. And these assignments that I give you will never be too big for you. They will also never be too small for you. Rather, they will always be fitting. So that you can truly fulfill these assignments. You can do everything I tell you. And that is no wonder, why? Because Jesus says, I have finally placed my Holy Spirit in you. And therefore you can do everything I assign to you. You will not fail at it. You do not have to fail at it. You may claim my power for yourself. For everything I assign to you is possible for you in my power. And "everything" here means everything. So, we must not shrink back from anything. That it is possible to do everything has to do with the fact that Christ has given us his Spirit. And that means, we are truly allowed to be strong and self-confident as Christians, walking through this world. And to do what Christ tells us or shows us in his power. We do not always have to have that feeling of not being enough. I simply want to encourage you at this point. In the past, people always said, "Put your stomach in, your ass out." So, you may walk upright through this world. You may rejoice over Jesus' assignments and simply get to work, implementing them in the certainty that it will succeed for you. Christ says, you can do it. When you have done everything I have commanded you. And the second moment seems to run completely counter to this first one. One thinks, oh no, now we're getting another one. It continues, when you have done everything I have commanded you, what has been commanded of you, then speak, we are unprofitable servants. We have done what we were obligated to do. Okay, so we Christians are unprofitable servants. Some translations are always quite interesting, just to look at how the individual Bible translations render this. I would say, they were always striving to avoid this word "unprofitable servants," because it does not sound so nice in our ears nowadays. And they tried to replace it with other words. But let me tell you what is originally written in the Greek. It is even stronger: useless, of no use, wretched, unworthy, not worthy of praise. Yes, one could actually say, interchangeable. You are interchangeable servants. Hit the target, right? Boom! That is just not necessarily what one wants to hear on Sunday in front of me, when one comes here comfortably to the service, is it? It sounds quite different. But Jesus says it that way. And perhaps you have already heard the saying, God has no other hands and feet than the backs of the faithful. So Jesus says with this parable, whoever claims that, that is not my line. That is not my line. Jesus has other hands and feet. If that were our motivation, that we think he cannot manage it in this world without us, we would have a rather wretched image of God, I would claim. I believe God can do everything, always, anytime and anywhere. And if he were to decide to do it without us humans, he would manage it too. I mean, he is God. Why should he need us? But the brilliant thing about God is that he says, I do not want to be without you. I want to be with you and through you. I want you to receive some of this blessing of serving that I have placed in serving. You will notice that you can blossom in service for me. So, to return to this word, we are indeed interchangeable, even though God values us so much on the other side. We are interchangeable. And I believe that hurts our ego terribly at first. And if you have allowed this pain and little to take effect on you, then let us think a little further in this direction, so that we personally discover this blessing of God, which rests upon all who are ready to serve God. And I thought, I could just tell all sorts of things now, in a rather general way. But that doesn’t bring it personally as close to me as when I have a very tangible example. And so I thought, I will be your very tangible example today. I will take myself as the basis for what the blessing of service means for me. And what it means to be replaceable in the end and yet to be allowed to serve in the blessing. So, what will you as a congregation do when I retire as a pastor in a few years? Right, you will appoint a new one, replacing me with a new one. What else? That is perfectly normal. Or is it? Another person will take over my position. Is that mean of you? I mean, I will have served you for over 30 years and you will simply replace me? Isn’t that nasty? Where are we going? No, it is not. It is quite normal. That is how it will happen. And probably someone will find a few warm words. Most likely someone will dig out a few embarrassing photos. We will all have fun again. That is also perfectly normal. And the very next day you will all return to business as usual. And the next Sunday someone else will stand there. That is how it will happen. Is that mean? Is that ungrateful? Is that hard-hearted? No. It is simply normal. In a few years I will be replaced and the younger ones among us will be replaced in their turn a few years later. That is how it is in this world. It is quite normal. We will then have done what we were assigned by God until then. I have served the congregation, you have a profession and in the congregation and in society, depending on where you are active. We will then have done what Jesus has assigned to each of us. We will have accomplished it wonderfully in his power and then another person will continue in our place. That is all quite normal. It was so for the useless servants before us, it will be so for us, and it will be exactly the same for the useless servants after us. Is that now a reason to become depressed? I do not think so. It first makes us humble in a good sense. So it lets a little air out of the big ego, like when you bite into a puff pastry. But then the substance comes through, even in a puff pastry. It first makes us humble. But I believe it is also worthwhile that this humility takes hold in us, because that preserves us from pride and from false arrogance. And I believe it makes us empathetic and ultimately capable of service. And that is permissible and that is also appropriate. But we do not have to be depressed, because precisely on that rests God’s blessing. And I invite you to discover it with me. I will start with the most obvious. So if I have this formulation, useless servant of Jesus, what would be the opposite, useful master of the devil. Well, that would be an alternative, but not particularly desirable for me, I would say. Why? Well, I do not like the reward. As a useless servant of Christ, glory with God stands at the end of my life. As a useful master of the devil, hell stands at the end of my life. To put it simply and briefly to the point. So from that perspective, being a useless servant of Jesus is clearly, clearly more beautiful, clearly more preferable for me. Therefore I would rather do that. And the other is, of course, also my daily business. As a useful master of the devil I would contribute to the advancement of hell in this world. But as a useful servant of Jesus Christ I am allowed to always bring a little piece of heaven to earth. I find that much more attractive, much more beautiful. And that brings us to the second point. Useless servants of Jesus do not need extra praise, because the designation is already correct. Namely, our reward is God’s nearness on earth and in the end the glory in heaven. And let us be honest, warm words on earth, sure, they are always nice. And how said, we should not skimp on it. But you will not get full from it in the long run. Eventually, they will stop again. They are good for the workplace atmosphere, for sure. But in the long run, we must be honest, you cannot live on that. But from the nearness of Jesus here on earth and then in his glory in heaven, that is a good life to live. The reward fits and is clearly better than the alternative. And thirdly, I am repeatedly amazed about the fact that Jesus blesses us so richly. Do you know why? Let us start from the very beginning: Who gave us life? God. Who has forgiven us our guilt and enabled us new eternal life? His Son Jesus Christ. Who has equipped us with gifts so that we can make a difference in everyday life, and who gave us spiritual gifts so that we can also make a difference in the kingdom of God? God, or rather the Holy Spirit. And when Jesus says to us with regard to our service, “without me you can do nothing” in John 15, that shows where the entire effect and the dynamics of what we are allowed to accomplish in service come from. I can try this morning to expound this Bible text to you, to bring it almost to you. And then I am done. What it stirs up in you, what you do with it, that is already a matter between God and you. I will not be able to exert any influence on that. Without him, I can do nothing. If this sermon appeals to you or does not appeal to you, that has to do very much with whether you open your heart, your heart, to God, open to the Holy Spirit and give him room, and let him come to you, and allow God to do his work in you, or whether you say, well, whatever that guy up front is talking about, no, that is what determines it. Without me you can do nothing. Without me there is no sermon, says Jesus, no sermon, no service, not even a helpful service, no practical service. Without him, all of that is worthless. We can do nothing, we will move nothing spiritually. This morning, just a few minutes ago, the service on the theater square started, with 120 singers in the choir, a huge city festival service, there will probably be thousands there this morning. And many weeks, many months of intensive work have gone into it. And that is great, also the praise concert later from 1:15 p.m. Great, it will come to that. But whether it bears fruit depends solely on our Lord Jesus. Without him, we might perhaps put on the most spectacular stage show. But it will move nothing spiritually. And therefore we have been praying for weeks, praying for this service, that God would lead our preparation, lead this service, and that these thousands of people, that they would be moved. I have repeatedly asked and looked up to the sky; at half past eleven it was blue over there, so the theater square will be dry. And that makes me happy, because then the people can sit there in peace and listen to the gospel. Without me you can do nothing, says Jesus. So, all effect, and that is the generosity of God, all effect comes from him. And therefore I find, I am gladly a useless servant in this sense, knowing that the true working comes from God. Of course, I give my best, of course I sat down at home, I prayed, I asked, what do we want to say to the people? What is important to you? What do you put on my heart? What may I pass on this morning? Of course! And nevertheless, there comes a point where I have to let go and say, Lord, from now on it is yours, without you I can do nothing. And it is like that for each of us in everyday life, wherever you say something from Jesus, once you have said it, you must let it go. And whether it has an effect on the other person is a matter between Jesus and the other person. Without him, we can do nothing. And I find it so beautiful that God says, but with me all things are possible to you. All things are possible to the one who believes, Jesus once said. All things are possible to one who believes. Of course, what I want to see made possible must align with the will of God, logically. God does nothing where He sees no sense in it. But if that is given, friends, there is no barrier, no limit. To constantly be aware of this: I am allowed to be the unprofitable servant of this Lord. He gives me tasks that I can carry out in His Spirit, and He provides for the effect. I mean, where else is there such an employer? You would have to search quite a long time, I would say. Fourthly, I find it simply brilliant that my life has real added value. In everything I do, and especially in the use of my spiritual gifts for Jesus, I am allowed to build the Kingdom of God with Him. I do not have to be content with the things of life, which are undoubtedly beautiful, but simply do not last. I was recently at a celebration, and one person had a car, friends, the most expensive Porsche. With everything, it is already beautiful, right? Does that only excite me? Well, I felt it. I like cars, I like fast cars, and I like the 1,000 features on cars, honestly. Sometimes I just walk through car dealerships when I have two hours of free

Alles in Ordnung. Also von all dem liest man nichts. Also so ein ... Sondern ... Du kannst alles tun, was ich dir sage. Ja, man könnte eigentlich sagen, austauschbar. Ihr seid austauschbare Knechte. Treffer versenkt, oder? Boom! Was denn sonst? Was ist dir wichtig? Was legst du mir aufs Herz? Was darf ich weitergeben heute Vormittag? Alles
