Work ethic is a moral obligation in Islam that equally concerns both employees and employers and preserves social balance through mutual respect, justice, and honest work.
Regardless of the position or task we hold – whether worker or employer, supervisor or employee – we all face the same moral test.
The text is a Friday sermon by the DITIB preaching commission that presents work ethic as an expression of Islamic morality. It emphasizes that believers should carry out their work conscientiously, honestly, and with awareness of divine responsibility. Employees and employers are described as interdependent parts of a whole, held together by mutual respect and justice. Specifically, it calls for working diligently, avoiding waste, paying wages in full and on time, and not wronging anyone. The sermon links earthly work to the goal of attaining the Hereafter and frames professional life as a moral test. It concludes with a supplication of the Prophet for lawful sustenance. The contemporary relevance lies in its application to the everyday employment relationship between employees and employers.

Work Ethic and Awareness of the Rights of Others
(01.05.2026)
Dear brothers and sisters, esteemed believers!
Islam is the religion of noble morality. One of the areas in which this high morality is manifested is work ethic. As in all areas of life, we also bear responsibility in professional life – a responsibility that we must conscientiously fulfill. As believers who believe in Allah and place our trust in Him, we live with the awareness that the best sustenance is that which we earn through our own work and honest effort.1 While on the one hand we strive to attain the Hereafter with the means entrusted to us by Allah, on the other hand we also work in this world, without forgetting our share in it2 – we make efforts, contribute, and create benefit for people. Let us not forget: Regardless of what position or task we hold – whether worker or employer, supervisor or employee – we all face the same moral trial.
Dear brothers and sisters!
By divine order, we were all created with different abilities.3 Some of us have become employees, others employers. Some are craftsmen, others engineers or teachers. However different our roles may be – we are all indispensable parts of a whole, members of a body that are interconnected. Just as the organs of a body can only function in harmony, so too in professional life are employees and employers equally dependent on one another. This social balance can only be maintained through mutual respect and justice. Let us therefore internalize the fundamental responsibilities that both bless our earnings and preserve this delicate balance:
Dear working brothers and sisters!
Let us begin our work each morning with the Basmala, that is, in the name of Allah. Whatever activity we engage in – let us always perform it carefully, with high quality, and conscientiously. Let us be disciplined, reliable, and attentive. Let us devote ourselves to our work with dedication. Let us preserve what has been entrusted to us as if it were our own property, and let us avoid waste. Let us not misuse the opportunities given to us. Let us earn our livelihood in a permissible way and ensure that no unlawfully acquired morsel comes to our family's table. Let us not forget: Wherever we are, we represent not only ourselves but also our faith, our culture, and our values. Let us never allow worldly interests to overshadow our dignity as Muslims.
Dear employers!
I would also like to address you: Always assign your tasks to qualified and competent people. Treat those who work under your responsibility with understanding and respect. Consider them as people entrusted to you. Value every drop of their sweat as something precious. Never disregard their rights. Pay wages in full and on time. Conduct your accounting with awareness of the Hereafter and ensure that you do wrong to no one. Avoid unlawful means of profit.
My brothers and sisters!
Let us not forget: This world is transient, while the Hereafter is eternal.4 What matters is to pass this trial of life with a clear conscience, having not violated the rights of others, and to stand before Allah with heads held high.
I would like to conclude my sermon with a supplication of our Prophet: "O Allah, grant us lawful sustenance! O Allah, protect us from the forbidden! O Allah, make us dependent on no one but You!"5
