A History of (Polyphonic) Silence - 1st Advent

The collective silence after the Third Reich was a complex process of shame, pain, and humility, the overcoming of which through the telling and preserving of stories is necessary to uphold the truth and shape the future.

I believe that is an important point, being able to carry on. And it is quite remarkable how people manage to find their way out of crises and then find a way to go on.

The text analyses the 'polyphonic silence' after the Third Reich, which affected perpetrators, victims, and helpers. The speakers discuss the psychological and historical reasons for this silence, such as shame, pain, humility, or the desire to draw a line under the past. It is argued that forgetting is dangerous, as people need stories to make sense of their lives. Using the example of helpers who enabled escapes, it is shown that these often acted out of Christian duty and humility, without seeing themselves as heroes. The text criticises the quick re-interpretation of 'traitors' as heroes after the war as whitewashing. It emphasises the complexity of historical narratives and the difficulty of placing one's own actions in context. Finally, the necessity of dealing with the past, rather than simply forgetting it, is stressed.

Welcome to the Advent Podcast. This year we want to think about stories, about narratives. What are we actually telling? What is worthy of being told and what are the stories? And what are perhaps also the stories that we are not telling? What are the reasons behind the silence, both on a personal level, but also historical and theological? And today we are dealing with the topic of multivocal silence. Anyone who has been in worship service in recent weeks with you, Daniel, may have even heard this term before; it has come up relatively frequently lately. What do you understand by this term? Well, it is the question, especially after the Third Reich, how is it with the stories that happened there? And when we look at that, we notice that there was indeed multivocal silence. So on the one hand from the perpetrators, which one can perhaps best understand, who may have been ashamed or simply had their reasons. We can also think a little more about what those reasons are. But the strange thing is that the victims also remained silent, perhaps because they felt every pain. And that something else comes on top of that, and about that we have also just spoken, that the silence of the helpers, that is, those who helped, who helped people to flee, who worked in the Underground, that they did not open up their stories either. So not after the war and sometimes not even their whole lives. And I have actually been asked more frequently about why that is, why everyone is actually silent. So not only the Third Reich, but Schelina, what do you think, why do people remain silent about what they have experienced? I believe there are many different reasons for that. I believe one aspect is also this reason of forgetting, that one perhaps wants to forget things. I mean, regarding the Third Reich, especially at that time, if one was a victim, if one was a perpetrator, if one perhaps was also a helper, one simply wants to check off this time and forget it. I mean, especially as a victim it is of course also a kind of feeling of shame that arises. One does not want to be a victim anymore, but one wants to build a new chapter of life. For the helpers it is perhaps also a matter of humility. One does not want to make a big deal of it. And of course as a perpetrator one wants to forget one's deeds, regardless of whether one feels remorse for them or not. So there is an SS man, there was a documentary about him, who is 96 and does not regret a single deed. But there are of course also the people who somehow regret their deeds and therefore perhaps do not want to be confronted with them anymore, because it is also in a way a story of pain, in one way or another. I believe that is an important point, being able to move on. And it is quite astonishing how the human being then manages to come out of crises somehow and then finds a way to go with it. And if we also think of the rubble women or similar, that is, Germany after the war completely destroyed, there was little to eat and one really had to fight for survival. It was cold, there was almost nothing, there was the worry about the men who had remained in the war or were missing and where one did not know. And there were many refugee flows, where people were on the move, it was really a fight for survival and it was also, I would say, not the time to tell. Or one did not take the time for it. I believe that is really a great lack and I mean, what you just said about this, one does not even want to tell it oneself anymore, is also a bit like drawing a line under it, perhaps for oneself. That is also something that we have frequently been in the historical discourse in recent times. So perhaps you can say something more about that to say. Yes, of course, I mean, right now in this time there is frequently the discourse, can't we simply draw a line under the Holocaust and can we, I mean, that's 80 years ago now, can't we simply forget it now and just start with something new. Because I mean, the perpetrators are dying, the victims are dying, so somehow there just aren't so many points of contact anymore and of course, one continues to learn about it in school, but for many people the topic has also somehow become too present. But there is of course also the question of what happens when we actually forget. So what if we drift into a history of non-narration, so can't that also somehow become totally dangerous for us today? Yes, so that's a bit of my point too, where I think, so we human beings need stories. That's also why this series, so the question, what does it actually do to us, so what also helps us to interpret life. And I think, for that we always need stories and the question is, what do you make of the experience? You can see it one way or another. So if someone helps you across the street, then you can say, wow, that's an extremely nice person. You can also say, what a strange type, who wants to help me as a young person across the street. So the question, it's the same situation, but what you make of it, either it's a nice gesture or it's a complete favor that someone does you. So I mean, now it's still a relatively simple example, but of course, if you think about it further, then it shows that so historical circumstances, which are mostly quite complex processes, and then to look at who actually did exactly what there? And you also brought up such an example, we have many of them, so those who in hindsight, when they were questioned about their deeds, as stated, but I was the smallest, the smallest cog in the whole thing, I read a report from someone who at the Großmarkt was responsible for the deportation and sat at such a kind of counter, that was generally planned, as were deported here in Frankfurt, and who then precisely documented with sketches, in order ultimately also to prove how bad others were and how unimportant he himself was. But so to speak, alone, when you see these sketches and this report somehow looks at it, which he deposited there, and then you think, crazy, so how someone is an important part of the whole system, who also somehow knows a lot and notices a lot and in hindsight wants to totally talk himself out of it. Yes, that would be this story of narratives, so what you said, how do others perceive my story, but how do I also tell my story? I mean, it's also exciting, alone this classification of the Germans back then into different perpetrator groups and of course then also somehow the question, where others saw your deeds and then somehow assign in a story or in a degree of severity of the story, but also how you then see it yourself and where you would classify yourself, so, or how we also with our today's view would classify the people. There were people who were now classified as runners, where we would say today, hey, they deserved much more punishment or something like that. Perhaps to now also come more to the view of the helpers, we had now here in our community hall the exhibition by Pietra Bonavita about the Bock and have a network, so a network from the WK Heinz-Welke and the Erste E. Parkal, which in June helped with the flight and who then but interestingly after that no longer spoke about it, but that was only decades later somehow first often covered up. And even today still much is somehow unclear, because actually that is a clear story, what one could have can tell, to also show him, so, hey, there were also good people there in that time. What do you think, why? What could be a reason for that, that one had such heroes, remains silent? So I think, that is so this, yes, a form of humility perhaps also. One does not want to make oneself so great, because it was for one perhaps also, perhaps also from a Christian motivation a duty, that one has fulfilled, to act differently there. And one did not perhaps see it in the situation so much as a heroic deed. In every crisis he also considered, I find, a very strong need for heroes. In every situation, after September, when you look at that, there was somehow a firefighter who ran back there somehow. There was now in the Harzenriver somehow a pilot who landed there with such a machine. That was absolutely impressive. So actually a tragedy that happened there and someone manages to take the helm and somehow act differently. I feel that way and I think you too, that one has such a very strong need for that. Also in this terrible time, to find such stories. But I think, you yourself, if you had been a helper there, perhaps do not feel it so, but also find your way with it. And I also know the people who really suffered under the Third Reich and who afterwards were still sad that the war had been lost. So you also have somehow ambivalent feelings, that is not quite so straightforward. So of course, I know Karls and I do not know whether Welke was also there. But also Otto Fricke, my great-uncle, they first toasted after the war ended and celebrated. I mean, they were probably much fewer there and they did it quietly. They did not go out into the streets, did not set off a huge fireworks display. Also there, because they probably would not have only reaped applause and one had to also look out. So the people who perhaps three weeks before had denounced you or could have denounced you, that they suddenly somehow very strongly change their opinion. So I think also there we are not so flexible as human beings. It is also fascinating, this narrative shift in the time of the Third Reich. Now, if we have the example of Bock, we have that left out. Those were actually, if one has so many traitors to the people, who stood up against the regime, against the Führer, the holy Führer. I mean, Welke or also Otto Fricke was also in prison. Especially Welke, he was also heavily mistreated. And somehow then suddenly after the war they could have been celebrated as heroes. Of course, they did not live. Or now the whole thing is coming up a little again. I mean, we see that with so many. Also last year we spoke about Trix-Bonne-Hüfer, who died under the NS rule. And today we celebrate him somehow as a hero, perhaps even a saint. When one thinks about how short this shift actually was. And sometimes I have the feeling that, one acts as if it was such a hard cut between the Third Reich and then after the liberation all of a sudden everything in democrats and everyone all of a sudden celebrates those who two weeks before would still have denounced them. But that was actually a much, much slower process. And to this day we still see that not everyone has followed this process. Of course, so I think, it was then quickly somehow a whitewashing, one somehow tried. So I also know from that time in North Hesse the stories in the villages, the big National Socialist, he then took his flag and first with pig manure so to speak, soaked it, to erase it. So, there were quite practical things that people then did, also to radically change their history. And perhaps explains That also a bit of this silence. So, it was a kind of rupture that happened, but which, so to speak, internally was hardly able to keep up so quickly. So, an outward change, so what was, so to speak, still forbidden yesterday, what was said, Otto Fricke was in prison. And in the next moment the Americans come and they celebrate him and he somehow gets a car made available to him. In the Vogel free, anyone could have done him harm, that would have been nothing. And then suddenly he somehow, he has something to say, so what that is also for a challenge, for oneself, to somehow keep up mentally. So also regardless of which side one then, I'll say, had been standing on, if one can say that. And we are speaking here of perpetrators and victims and helpers, but what we also noticed, it is also a lot of grey in between. So, there were also the extreme National Socialists, because Valentin Sänger will tell that, a doctor, who is really a convinced National Socialist and who recognizes him as a circumcised Jew and treats him and does not let him be exposed. There is also somehow outwardly one thing and inwardly perhaps a certain resistance, perhaps he did not save 1000 people, but they are one at this point somehow already. That one has to see that too. So we also wish for the world very much to be black and white. But it is mostly in between and I believe also the feelings or how do you think about that? In any case. Just when we somehow look into the kitchen, the known kitchen, those were the good ones, the German Christians, those were the bad ones. There was a study, that was conducted in Schleswig-Holstein, where the result was that over 80 percent of the bicycle riders of the known kitchen were in the end, who had not performed any resistance or even like the yet the NS-rulership somehow were loyal in one way or another. And there were somehow German Christians, who then somehow helped or also to some extent showed resistance. So as you said, it is not always black and white, so both then National Socialism as also to this day. Yes and I mean, that is also a bit the storyline of today's podcast. I truly believe that earlier, when we look at the time of National Socialism, that we also wish for such stories and then perhaps also black and white stories, also the heroes, we also find that totally interesting. So we also want to answer a bit and we want the world to be relatively good, manageable and controllable. Many of these stories were unfortunately not told, but there is just a great need for stories. And I believe, that is where populist narratives strongly dock on, which also this wish for such a simple classification and a bit, I know where I stand, I know who the good ones are, who the bad ones are, I can locate myself there, so that that is very, very clear. And then one somehow seeks a group onto which one pushes everything. And those are of course narratives that we from National Socialism know all too well. So where one has also managed it, it is crazy that people have hated other people. So they learned to hate their neighbors. I would find it exciting today to hear from you again, what is there actually for a story that perhaps totally moved you or that simply made something clear to you again, perhaps also about yourself, perhaps about God or about others? What you have already mentioned, this story of Valentin Sänger, I find really exciting somehow. Or also a German Jew, who wrote your book, or I was Hitler Youth Alamo, who just, and that is the exciting thing there, survived through luck and who then posed as a Hitler Youth. And who then also somehow through luck, but also just as a Jew among the Finen has survived. And then somehow later Sender Damian came along and hit upon it and said, yes, I was a Jew, what did you do to me? And I mean, that's already fascinating, because you also mentioned neighbors who become Finen. And somehow, that's so in between, so earlier that would have been my friends, now I'm somehow the enemy, but I live among the Finen and actually everything is normal. I am treated normally like the other one, but only because they don't know about my secret, that I actually don't belong to them, and if they were to find out, I would probably die or something like that. And I find that somehow a fascinating story, because it somehow also shows how absurd the whole thing is. So from somehow judging other people because they are supposedly somehow different. But if you don't know that they are somehow different in this narrative, then it's just somehow irrelevant. Interestingly, I have to think of The Black Clownsline, because what you said, much of that also occurs there. That is a black head who then so to speak gets into the Kuckungsclan and simply writes a letter there and then investigates at the cover, and of course, he has a white colleague who then goes to the real meetings for him, but he conducts the phone calls and he conducts these conversations with this boss of the Kuckungsclan in America and then he asks them, how would you now recognize, because you know that I am white, and then he says yes, it's a certain language, certain speech patterns and swearing and everything. And then he starts, so the One Star Wars, the investigator, then starts to incorporate into the phone calls exactly these patterns that the other one told me about, how one can recognize Black people, and that doesn't work. It gives him an incredible amount of fun, to let this undercover aspect flow in at that point, without the other one noticing. And the fascinating thing about Black Clans, one is also the white police officer who then goes to the meetings, he is also a Jew, so also an enemy image in the eyes of the Kuckungsclan, but also as you said, one imagines how the Finen are or also Jews, who are sometimes portrayed with somehow big noses and somehow a bit dim-witted, but at the end of the day one doesn't recognize them at all, when they stand in front of you, not even as the boss of the Kuckungsclan. Yes, exactly, that is precisely, that shows these prejudices one has and also these narratives, and sometimes it doesn't fit and then one is also again, yes, you are just different from the others, but one doesn't change the narrative, so that is also a point. Yes, you are one of the Guden, the others are just not like that. Exactly, but exactly, so you are, exactly, there one then tries to explain the exception, so that the ways remain. I also see our great interest, now, I mean, as a hobby historian and also others, to bring a little light into the darkness, and that comes to me as if sometimes a door opens a crack wide and then one has to somehow peer in, and one doesn't get to so many things anymore and it is always a great luck when one then finds something that gives a glimpse behind. I have in my research also found a reading diary of a great-uncle of mine, who then actually wrote a review about my Kampf. I found that so fascinating, because everyone said, no one read the book, and he writes for a great book, I can just super imagine Hitler, so very vividly, how he is just presenting it to someone there, and he also connects exactly to these Christian aspects, that occur in my Kampf, positive Christianity. That Hitler has said there, yes, we want to rebuild the people on the basis of also a faith, and I think that convinced him. So it is exciting, just to find a review like that, where a lot of people, I mean, didn't stay silent, but told something else and had an alternative interpretation in the establishment and didn't stand up for what was there. We recently had a descendant of a Holocaust survivor here for a lecture, Bertil Oppenheimer, who lived here on Bockmann-Heimer-Landstraße, and the exciting thing again was how the son told that his father or his mother, I don't remember exactly anymore, the parents started there, they wanted to live about it and then got a box where there were changes of clothes from that time and then broke off after one sentence. Now, whether that is also a physical limit, now, whether it really takes effort to cross over this threshold, this wall that one perhaps also builds, to what is there, what has hurt, what was a difficult time. So it seems somehow really like an obstacle. And the question is how one can jump over this obstacle. But perhaps it simply also needs time. And not my Bertil Oppenheimer, he then researched the family history and learned a lot. Perhaps it simply needs different generations who can then somehow start to demand and then somehow bring to light. I mean, we with our confirmation year to the Sinergrüne and Mr. Lindow 23 researched and you also said it so beautifully, it was somehow the right time now and somehow the right place. And I believe that it would not have worked at every time and would have met with such a great echo. But now it is just the time where one can tell stories again and where people are also open for such beautiful stories. I just had to think again where y

Was erzählen wir eigentlich? Was verstehst du denn in diesem Begriff? Also vielleicht kannst du noch mal da zu was sagen. Was glaubst du, warum? Ich muss interessanterweise an The Black Clownsline denken, weil also was du gesagt hast, da vieles auch so vorkommt.
