The sexualized violence by Pastor Wiedemann was not an isolated incident but the result of systematic abuse of power and institutional failure within the HuK, which is now being addressed through reflection and prevention.

This was not a matter of individual failings but of sustained conduct. A dark figure must be assumed.

The press release informs about the publication of a study by the Hochschule RheinMain commissioned by the Evangelical Church in Rhineland. The study examines sexualized violence by Pastor Hans-Georg Wiedemann in the Markus Church Congregation and the Working Group Homosexuals and Church (HuK). The HuK acknowledges that it was a case of systematic abuse of power and spiritual abuse, which was enabled by institutional failure and ideological framing. Wiedemann was active in pro-paedosexual networks and for years shaped the debate in the HuK uncritically. Specifically, physical assaults, sexual coercion, and the facilitation of contacts between minors and paedophiles are mentioned. The HuK emphasizes that since 1997 there has been a consensus that there is no consensual sexuality between children and adults. Since 2021 the group has been working through its history of guilt and has developed prevention concepts. The HuK asks those affected for forgiveness and calls for further accounts of experiences.

Düsseldorf, May 18, 2026 – On May 12, 2026, the RheinMain University of Applied Sciences presented, on behalf of the Evangelical Church in Rhineland, the study “Male Friendships” – Sexualized Violence against Men and Boys in the Düsseldorf Markus Church Congregation and the Working Group Homosexuals and Church (HuK). The Ecumenical Working Group Homosexuals and Church (HuK) e.V. supported the study intensively and states: It involved systematic abuse of power and spiritual abuse with sexualized violence, primarily against adults, but also against minors. Key findings: Hans-Georg Wiedemann, a pastor in the Markus Congregation and an active HuK member, used his diverse roles (counselor, therapist, adjunct professor, author) for a network of influence. His actions can only be understood against the background of individual responsibility, ideological framing, institutional failure, and societal blind spots. Wiedemann was active in pro-pedosexual networks (including DSAP, AHS), promoted non-violent sexuality between adults and children, and disseminated anti-feminist theses. Within the HuK, he shaped the debate uncritically for years. Specific cases: Physical assaults in counseling situations, a multi-year relationship with sexual coercion involving a significantly younger person, and the mediation of contacts between a 13-year-old person and pedosexuals. Failure and processing: The HuK acknowledges its institutional failure: By downplaying, looking away, and providing a platform for theses that Wiedemann and other pedo-activists were able to publish, among others, in the members' magazine until the mid-1990s, sexualized violence was enabled. As part of the (sexual) reformist forces of the gay movement in the Federal Republic of Germany, the HuK closed its eyes to power relations in sexual relationships; it generally welcomed the life of homosexual relationships. Critical voices, especially from the women's movement, were not heard. Since 1997, it has been consensus within the HuK that there can be no consensual sexuality between children and adults. Since 2021, the group has been processing its history of guilt – including through studies, internal discussions, and prevention concepts. Current measures: Prevention and protection concepts against sexualized violence have been developed and are being implemented. Call to those affected and witnesses: The HuK requests further experience reports and asks all those affected for forgiveness. Quote from HuK: “It was not about individual failings, but about continued action. A dark figure must be assumed.” Contact: Ecumenical Working Group Homosexuals and Church (HuK) e.V. Wiedemann war in pro-pädosexuellen Netzwerken (u.a.
