Saint Meletios Pegas: The Confessing Patriarch of Alexandria
Hagiography - Figures
15.09.2026
Lambros Skontzos, Theologian
In the difficult times of Ottoman slavery, Divine Providence willed that great spiritual figures should emerge, who served, illuminated, and supported the Church of Christ and rendered invaluable services to our enslaved nation. One of these was Saint Meletios Pegas, Patriarch of Alexandria, a distinguished figure of the 16th century.
He was born in Chandax (Heraklion) of Crete in 1549 to pious, virtuous, and wealthy parents, who instilled in his soul deep piety and a virtuous life. From a young age, he showed a great inclination for letters, and therefore his parents ensured that he received the best possible education, under the most distinguished teachers of his time, among whom was the renowned hieromonk Meletios Vlastos. Under him, he learned the Greek and Latin languages, grammar, philosophy, and rhetoric. Also, under this great teacher, he learned the virtuous and moral life, which accompanied him throughout his entire life.
After his general studies in Crete, and at the age of eighteen, he went to Italy, to the renowned University of Padua, to complete his studies. He studied philosophy, theology, medicine, and law. But the spiritual climate there was extremely hostile towards Orthodox students, who faced strong pressures to accept the Western heretical principles, and unfortunately many yielded, and upon returning to Greece, they engaged in proselytizing in favor of Papism. Despite his young age and the unbearable pressures of the Papists, Meletios remained immovable in the Orthodox faith, and did not consider yielding to their heresies.
He also had to face another serious problem. The Papal universities, in order to confer academic degrees on graduates, required an oath of submission to the “Pope”! Meletios found himself in a great dilemma, but ultimately he did not yield to the blackmail, refusing to declare submission to the “Pope” and faith in the Papal heretical dogmas. He angrily rejected every blasphemous thought of denying Orthodoxy and embracing Papism. He preferred to be deprived of the university diplomas rather than the treasure of the Orthodox faith, the only saving faith! It was his first great confessional heroic act, which marked his subsequent turbulent course. Very characteristic is the statement of G. Valesta: “This bravery of his, this severe trial of his conscience, national and religious, opened before the eyes of the young student the whole dark depth of Papism and made him set as the primary goal of his life its combat and the liberation of his homeland from its destructive influence. Then he formulates a life program: to don the monastic robe and become a soldier of Orthodoxy, to save his island and Greece and the whole Orthodox East from the danger of Latinization, which at that time caused greater anxiety and fear among educated Greeks than the Turkish yoke…” (Meletios Pegas, Chrysopygi, Athens 1958, p. 28).
After eight years of studies in Italy, he returned to his native Crete and embraced the monastic life at the age of 25. He was ordained a monk at the Holy Monastery of Angarathou, where the hegumen was Silvestros, later Patriarch of Alexandria.
From an early age, he displayed worthy zeal for the monastic life and a virtuous way of life. At the same time, he decided to utilize his knowledge and virtues for the sake of his enslaved compatriots. With the blessing of the hegumen, he would leave the Monastery and travel through the cities and villages of Crete, encouraging the persecuted Romans, teaching the Orthodox faith, and fighting vigorously, repelling with strong arguments the suffocating propaganda that the ruthless Papist Jesuit missionaries (hierarchs) were carrying out, who were literally ravaging the island and converting Orthodox in droves to heretical Papism by illegitimate means, even by force. The basic axis of his teaching was unwavering faith in Christ, freed from Western heresies, adherence to Orthodoxy, the only true Church, and Hellenicity. For this reason, he became a target of fanatical Papists, who sought to silence him, but also his physical extermination!
After the election of his hegumen, Sylvester, as Patriarch of Alexandria, between the years 1565 and 1569, Meletius followed him and settled in the Holy Monastery of Sinai, where he was ordained a hieromonk. But Patriarch Sylvester, appreciating his zeal for Orthodoxy, his education, and his other qualifications, called him to the Patriarchate to work missionarily and to organize the clergy and monasticism. And indeed, he responded successfully to the ministry entrusted to him.
Meletius, a restless spirit and consumed by fervent zeal for the unity of the fragmented Christian world, made honorable efforts to convince the heretical Westerners to abandon their errors and return to Orthodoxy. He focused on and addressed primarily the Protestants, who had recently (1519) split from the Papal “church,” protesting against Papal abominations, abandoning the Papists, considering any discussion with them futile. He opened correspondence with the theologians of the University of Leiden, who, as is known, had opened communication with prominent Orthodox figures and exchanged letters. Among them was Meletius, who in his letters tried to convince them that the truth lies in Orthodoxy. But unfortunately, as is known, these contacts did not come to fruition.
Naturally, his life was not easy in the great Egyptian metropolis. Papists, Protestants, Copts, and other heretics caused him serious problems due to his anti-heretical activity. But Meletius remained steadfast in his work, disregarding and facing with patience and strength the obstacles and problems they created for him.
In 1582, Patriarch Sylvester appointed him as his representative (envoy) in Cairo, to work missionarily and to organize the parishes there. Meletius accepted his new ministry willingly, performing there as well worthy pastoral and missionary work.
The fame of his personality and his actions reached far, even to Russia, where the emperor called him to Moscow to establish the Russian Church. Meletius accepted the proposal, but while traveling to Russia, he passed through Constantinople, where he observed the tragedy that the Orthodox there were experiencing under Turkish oppression. He was persuaded to remain and work for the storm-tossed Church. He obeyed, remaining for three years, working with unusual zeal for the relief of the oppressed and persecuted Romans.
In 1590, after the death of the Patriarch of Alexandria, Sylvester, he was called to assume the vacant patriarchal throne, with the consent of the clergy and the people and the approval of all the faithful. He proved worthy of his election. With moderation and prudence, he continued to work in his new position. Through appropriate and delicate maneuvers, he managed to obtain from the Sultan the release of the Patriarchate from unbearable debts and, through collections, mainly in Crete, he strengthened the finances of the Patriarchate.
In 1593, he went to Constantinople to take part in the Permanent Synod under the patriarchate of Jeremiah II (1536-1594). At this synod, Meletius proposed the declaration of the Orthodox adherence to the decisions of the Ecumenical Councils and the annual convening of a Permanent Synod. Then the Synodal Tome of recognition of the Patriarchate of Moscow was sent. With this adherence, this great ecclesiastical man fortified the Orthodox faith, in an era of terrifying spiritual fermentations and challenges from the activity of the Westerners in the Orthodox space of the East.
At the same time, we have the appearance of the Union in Eastern Europe and mainly in Poland, which, with unspeakable persecutions, massacres, and violence, transferred a multitude of Orthodox to Papism. Meletius, when he learned of the serious problem there, sent his nephew Cyril Lucaris as Patriarchal Exarch, who cooperated with the exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, in order to confront the spread of the Union and Papism. But in 1597, Lucaris was forced to escape from Poland to avoid his imprisonment and execution by the fanatical Unionist Papists. In the year 1599, Patriarch Meletius again sent Lucaris to Poland, where he remained until the beginning of 1601, after which he went to Moldavia to support the Orthodox there who were being battered by the Latins.
From his care, Meletius did not neglect the heretical Copts of Egypt and Ethiopia, trying to bring them back to the Orthodox faith and to include them in the true Orthodox Church, without unfortunately spectacular results.
In 1594, the Ecumenical Patriarch Jeremiah II fell asleep in Christ, and Meletius received offers to assume the Ecumenical Throne. However, this humble ecclesiastical leader refused, preferring to remain on the second throne of Alexandria. He served only as regent of the Ecumenical Throne between the years 1597 and 1598.
He fell asleep in the year 1601 at the age of 52, and the Church, evaluating his holiness and his enormous work, included him in its hagiographical records, setting his commemoration on September 13.
Saint Meletius is included among the Confessing Patriarchs, who spent his life in the consolidation of the Orthodox faith. His zeal for the unity of the fragmented Christian world and his efforts for the conversion of the heretics to the Church led some of his contemporaries to consider him as a "phil-Western," which is not true. As a deep knower of the Papal and Protestant heresies, he became a fierce critic of them. This is witnessed by a surviving letter of his, written in 1538 to his friend, the learned bishop of Kythira, Maximus Margunios (1549-1602), in which he develops anti-unionist argumentation. He particularly resisted, with vigor, against the Union, which is, as is known, the "Trojan horse" of Papism, for the capture of Orthodoxy.
He also developed a rich literary work, such as: "On the Uncorrupted Mysteries," "Catechism on the Pope," "Orthodox Teaching," "Stromateis," "Discourse Against Luther and Calvin," "Chrysopyge," etc., which breathe the aroma of Orthodoxy and have a confessional character. It is also characteristic that, while in his writings he used the learned language, in his sermons he used the vernacular, so that his listeners could understand him.
He is generally regarded as a rare personality, a chosen vessel, for the service of the Church and the Nation in those dire years. Some consider him one of the most significant and admirable churchmen after the fall of Constantinople (1453).
