God's salvation is not a deserved reward for work performed, but an unconditional gift of his mercy, which is given to all people regardless of their performance.

The love of God and salvation are the reward that is given in full and unconditionally to all (the last and the first).

The text is a liturgical exegesis of the readings for the 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle A). It begins with Isaiah 55,6-9 and emphasizes that God's plans go beyond human conceptions and that his mercy overflows. Psalm 145 is interpreted as a praise of divine kingship and goodness. The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard (Mt 20,1-16) is treated as the central text: God does not reward according to performance or merit, but grants the Kingdom as grace to all who accept his call. The text criticizes a meritocratic attitude and sets divine generosity against it. Quotations from the Catechism of the Catholic Church and from the post-synodal exhortation Christi Fideles Laici are cited. The message is directed to the assembled community and calls for conversion and trust in God's grace.

1 From the Book of Isaiah (Is. 55,6-9) My plans are not your plans This proclaimed passage concludes the second part of the Book of Isaiah (Second Isaiah). The prophet, who has shown how God brings comfort to his people throughout the book, now makes a solemn announcement of redemption by God for the exiles in Babylon, in a call to conversion; God surpasses every human plan and project and is an overflowing compassion and generosity. Therefore, he recalls that seeking the Lord and letting oneself be guided by his fruitful Word soaks our life with his will. The vehemence of v. 6 of "seek the Lord" pushes toward that time of grace and of conversion as an always active opportunity. It is an exhortation to participate in the goods of the new covenant (vv. 1-5) to convert while there is still time (vv. 6-11). The image of the rain and the snow that descend from heaven to fertilize the earth (vv. 10-11) is nothing other than the fruitful blessing of the Lord in his Word. The liturgical emphasis will fall on vv. 8-9 as a great distance between the sovereignty of God, his capacity of mercy and forgiveness, above any human thought. Therefore, God does not convert man if man does not orient himself toward him. Twenty-Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time (Cycle A) September 20, 2026 2 Psalm 145 (144), 2-3,8-9.17-18. R/. 18a The Lord is near to those who call upon him This last didactic and alephatic (alphabetic for us) psalm of the Psalter brings us the most recurrent apothegm (synthetic sentence) to speak of the attributes of God: the Lord "merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love." This goodness falls upon those who know how to trust. "He is near to those who call upon him sincerely." The attributes of God and his actions deserve all praise for his unfathomable greatness. The body of the psalm, in its two sections (vv. 3-12; 13-20), develops the themes of the introduction (vv. 1-2): the divinity and the kingship of the Lord. The centrality that the divine kingship (the reign of God) has in this psalm must continue to grow. God is King! But a king who puts all his power at the service of his love and pours out his blessings upon humanity because he cares for his creation and in it diffuses life. The tenderness and mercy of the Lord overflow toward us if we seek him sincerely. From the letter of the apostle Saint Paul to the Philippians (Phil. 1,20c-24.27a) For me to live is Christ This last didactic and alephatic (alphabetic for us) psalm of the Psalter brings us the most recurrent apothegm (synthetic sentence) to speak of the attributes of God: the Lord "merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love." This goodness falls upon those who know how to trust: "He is near to those who call upon him sincerely." The attributes of God and his actions deserve all praise for his unfathomable greatness. The body of the psalm, in its two sections (vv. 3-12; 13-20), develops the themes of the introduction (vv. 1-2): the divinity and the kingship of the Lord. The centrality that the divine kingship (the reign of God) has in this psalm must continue to grow. God is King! But a king who puts all his power at the service of his love and pours out his blessings upon humanity, because he cares for his creation and in it diffuses life. The tenderness and mercy of the Lord overflow toward us if we seek him sincerely. 3 Acclamation before the Gospel (Acts 16,14b) Open, Lord, our heart, so that we may accept the words of your Son. Paul, who was preaching in Philippi, and in an experience of encounter with some women, caught the attention of Lydia, to whom "the Lord opened her heart" to the message of salvation proclaimed by Paul. The liturgical acclamation is set in the form of a supplication to arrive at that disposition on our part. From the Holy Gospel according to Saint Matthew (Mt 20,1-16) Are you envious because I am generous? In the narrative construction that we have had liturgically, after the teaching of the community with the correction and the forgiveness proclaimed in the preceding Sundays, follows a section full of images in parables. The three following Sundays we will be contemplating parables, all of them recreated around the work in the vineyard. For our case of the celebration of this Sunday, where the texts of the same gospel have previously placed their emphasis on "the reward for having left everything" (Mt 19,27-29), for the presentation of the current parable we find ourselves with a literary inclusion that becomes the interpretive axis of the same: "many first will be last and many last first" (Mt 19,30; 20,16). The formulated presentation does not differ from those of chapter 13: "The Kingdom of heaven is like…" with the forcefulness of seeing that the Kingdom of heaven "acts like…". The protagonist is the master of the house or owner (in the following Sundays we will see him as a father of a family or a tenant of his vineyard), who analogously reflects God the Father. 4 The centrality for the present will be given at the moment of the payment (which demonstrates the reason for the inclusion). All the characters are surprised or uncomfortable, not by the way of carrying out the payment, but by the value delivered: a denarius. The interpretation that has been given throughout the Tradition and teaching of the Church has always been directed, from its aspect of parable, as the reward of "eternal life" and not a quantitative or material reward. And if it were of this latter mode (which is not entirely its purpose), the same parable tries to balance that economic imbalance by speaking of how only with those of the first hour of the dawn did he agree and adjust the value of the payment (v. 2). It is never a case of injustice. The vv. 13-16 respond to the dissatisfactions and discomforts of "the first ones"; the owner is not unjust, he "puts in their place" those who claim and manifests his goodness and generosity toward the rest, especially toward "the last ones". He reproaches the envy of the first ones for his goodness with "his affairs". "The Kingdom is a gift of God and not a wage for the works of the Law; salvation is not a reward owed almost by contract; it is, above all, a divine initiative made of love and of communion, in which man is invited to take part with joy and without restrictions" (G. Ravasi). It is never quantified by the efforts and works done, as on the basis of meritocracy, but is received as a blessing for the acceptance of the call to salvation. The vineyard turns out to be the participation in the Kingdom of heaven. Another aspect of the mercy and generosity of God, in the figure of the owner, is his insistent convocation to participate in his vineyard (a figure that easily is related to the field of God, the Kingdom). From the dawn, at the third hour, at the sixth, at the ninth and at the eleventh hour (hourly differentiation that marks a workday in the Jewish environment). This variety speaks of the diversity of vital moments of a person or of the diversity of people in their age, as alluded to by St. Gregory the Great. The postsynodal exhortation Christi Fideles Laici opens its message precisely with this 5 text to recognize the call to all to the building of the Kingdom of God in the world (ChFL 1-2). By way of conclusion, the call to participate in the Kingdom is for all and the blessing delivered is the Kingdom itself, eternal life. The love of God and salvation are the reward that is given fully and unconditionally for all (last and first). 6 • The logic of God surpasses our thoughts, which in many occasions are measured by merits or by profiles with which something is considered won or achieved. For God, the gaze is not made in effectiveness, the yield or the productivity, but in satisfying the human need of salvation by his infinite mercy. • "The vocation to eternal life is supernatural. It depends entirely on the free initiative of God, because only He can reveal Himself and give Himself. It surpasses the capacities of the intelligence and the forces of the human will, as those of every creature (cf. 1 Co 2,7-9)." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1998). • "The term 'merit' designates in general the retribution due by a community or a society to the action of one of its members, considered as a good work or a bad work, worthy of reward or of sanction. Merit corresponds to the virtue of justice according to the principle of equality that governs it. In the face of God there is no merit on the part of man in the sense of a strict right. Between Him and us, the inequality is immeasurable, because we have received everything from Him, our Creator. The merit of man before God in the Christian life comes from the fact that God has freely willed to associate man with the work of his grace. The paternal action of God is the first, inasmuch as He impels, and the free action of man is the second, inasmuch as he cooperates, so that the merits of good works must be attributed to the grace of God in the first place, and to the faithful, next. On the other hand, the merit of man also falls back on God, for his good actions proceed, in Christ, from the graces that go before and from the aids of the Holy Spirit." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2006-2008). • To "cultivate the faith" it is necessary to exercise the care, growth, and strengthening of the faith, in me and in others. Our faith is never finished and perfect, but it is worthy of being known, loved, and served with greater perfection. Listening to the Lord, who calls us to the cultivation of our faith, involves all of us and leads us to the same goal: salvation and eternal life. • "Your strange justice unsettled me, that way of measuring that forgot the hours worked. I got angry with those who did less, believed less, sacrificed less, and I was indignant with you, who seemed to see nothing. I tried to negotiate a better pay, some recognition, a medal or two. The injustice of your wage hurt me. The illogic of your prizes surprised me. The claim and envy bit me, the luck of the day laborers of the last hour. Until the day when I was the last, the most foolish, the most fragile, the worst, the most loved… and I began to understand." (Curious way of paying us, José María R. Olaizola, SJ). O God, who have placed the fullness of the divine law in the love of you and of the neighbor, grant us to fulfill your commandments, so that we may merit to arrive at eternal life. (Collect Prayer of the Mass, Twenty-Fifth Sunday). 8 Entrance Monition Brothers and sisters, welcome to the Eucharistic celebration. The Lord of life calls us together in liturgical assembly to commemorate the mystery of our salvation and to pour upon us the divine grace that keeps us on the path of conversion. Therefore, let us rejoice in God and participate with joy, because our life is in Christ and in Him it reaches its fullness. Monition to the Readings The Word of God is light on the way and a source of conversion for the believers. He who meditates on it will find the way of truth, and he who practices it will live according to the will of God. Let us listen with faith. 9 Prayer of the Faithful Presider: To the good God, who goes out in search of man to call him to take part in the tasks of his vineyard, let us present our prayers. R/: In your clemency and mercy, hear us, Lord. 1. For the universal Church, that she may be a companion on the way of those whom the Lord wished to call to his hours. 2. For the Archdiocese of Bogotá in this triennium of the faith, that, through its evangelizing actions, it may nourish the faith of the faithful. 3. For the rulers, that they may seek the Lord who allows himself to be found and invoke him with sincerity of heart. 4. For those who are mistakenly led along paths of evil, so that, aware of the Lord's goodness, they may take the path that leads to salvation. 5. For us, so that, living in the world, we may keep the desire to share in the life of heaven. President: You, Lord, who are near to those who call upon you, receive our prayers and grant us what is most beneficial for us. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. 10 XXV Sunday of Ordinary Time Cycle A September 20 1. Accompanying For most of us it is difficult to understand that the things that are beneficial for us, that do us good, that are healthy, do not necessarily coincide with what we like or what we find pleasant. Such is the will of God: it is not something we necessarily desire or that gives us quick benefits. However, welcoming it and trusting in it helps us to grow, to mature, and exercises us in love. 2. Motivating It is important to consider that the things we find bothersome also represent opportunities to gain great learnings and to grow; and that they can arise at any moment. There is no exact moment to cooperate and to do what God invites us to. God comes to meet us at any hour of our life to provide us with the good we need, like the owner of the vineyard of whom Jesus speaks. The footprints of the will of God are discovered through good habits, for example: a. healthy eating and self-care, b. control of screens, c. study, d. the duties of the house. 11 3. Challenging We like to think that we can do everything without anyone's help, without listening; that no one should tell us what we must do. The truth is that we do not have the appropriate answers for everything. The challenge is to be attentive to the voice of God, who speaks within us and indicates to us the path of good through the correction and the teaching of those who love us, even if at first we do not understand or feel upset. We propose three small challenges to encourage constancy and diligence. 1. You are going to take on a small responsibility at home, it can be something simple but that is constant. 2. When your parents give you a task or responsibility you are going to respond immediately without making them wait. 3. Every day, before leaving for school, you are going to tell God that you are willing to do his will with joy. 12 Entrance Antiphon Be all cordially welcome to this Holy Eucharist. The journey of the believers is accompanied by a powerful word: that of God. Today we will hear that it is not easy to be led by it; it does not always correspond to what we desire or to how we think things should be. Allowing ourselves to be guided by it opens new horizons and purposes full of mercy, justice, and peace for all. Let us begin the Mass together with joy and devotion. Antiphon to the Readings The prophet Jeremiah will tell us that the ways of God are not our ways and that our desires are not always what God wants for our life. This is not bad, quite the opposite. God wants us for great things and wants our life to have a purpose. It does not matter at what moment he calls us or how he does it; what is important is to accept his invitation and to be generous with the response. Let us listen. 13 Prayer of the Faithful President: Dear children, let us ask God that, hearing his sweet voice, we may respond with generosity to his call. Let us respond together: R./ Good Father, may we do your will each day. 1. Let us pray for the Church, for Pope Leo and Archbishop Luis José, so that we all may follow Jesus with joy, perseverance, and love, and accept with generosity the mission of carrying his message to those who need it most. Let us pray. 2. Let us pray for our teachers, catechists, and those who help us to grow, so that God may give them wisdom, patience, and joy to accompany us on our path. Let us pray. 3. Let us pray for our families, so that we may learn to trust in God and, although we encounter difficulties and setbacks, we may remain united and never give up. Let us pray. 4. Let us pray for all who have come to the parish, so that each day we may learn and embrace the path that God has prepared for us. Let us pray. President: Good Father, hear these prayers that we present to you with faith and trust. Help us to live in your love, following the path you have prepared for us, and to sow seeds of love throughout the world. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
