The reduction of reality to numbers and key performance indicators obscures the living dimension of faith and community; true freedom and joy in life arise only in the following of Christ and in the cultivation of genuine relationships.
You cannot get to faith with statistics. Numbers do not make for joy in life.
The text begins with the question 'How many?' and highlights the dominance of numbers, key performance indicators, and rankings in modern society. The preacher criticizes that through economization the word and language have lost their value and that living dimensions of reality are no longer captured. Using the example of the profession ceremony of the Franciscan Sisters, religious vocation is understood as an answer to the question of God, in which it is about conformity with Christ. Francis of Assisi is presented as a model of poverty and of freeing oneself for God. The text calls for the cultivation of relationships and brotherhood and sisterhood and refers to the universal community according to Pope Francis. With Bonhoeffer's blessing and Bonaventure's praise of creation, the text closes with a thanksgiving to the religious women for their witness.

On Numbers and on the Joy in God Sermon at the Profession Ceremony of the Franciscan Sisters of Vöcklabruck 5 September 2026, Monastery Church, Vöcklabruck
How many?
Yesterday (4.9.2026) I returned from a solidarity trip to Iraq, specifically Kurdistan.
In many encounters with parishes, in kindergartens, schools and universities, refugee camps, with bishops and patriarchs, the question kept coming up: How many? How many Christians are there (still)? How many have emigrated? How many have been murdered and killed? How much do people earn? How many priests are there? How many students and children? Etc. – Even in our latitudes one often hears the question: How many (still) go to church? How many children and young people? How many have left the church? How many Muslims or people of other faiths? How many religious vocations or ordinations? How many callings?
When one asks about the changes that are currently leaving the deepest traces on the face of society, one speaks of the increase in numbers. What do the various areas cost or bring? Is cost truth given, or how can it be improved? Are the current calculation approaches correct? Balances and utilization data can be produced. One can create scales or rankings. Quotients decide in the media about quality or failure. That was a radical devaluation of the word and of language. Through economization, the word has become marginal; the political has lost in value. In the beginning was the number? What is important is explored through key figures, benchmarks and rankings, not through language, nor through images. The general translation of reality into numbers, which has become necessary in modernity, makes it unlikely that all dimensions of reality are communicated equally.
Logic and mathematics can hold onto the dead, but cannot taste and savor living bread. The language of longing has been felled, words for personal encounter and for faith have been bled dry or betrayed by the multitude of non-committal speech. What about the face, about the countenance? Numbers cannot explore the first love of a religious vocation. With statistics, one does not reach faith. Numbers do not yet make for joy in life.
What am I in my innermost self? – “Child of God” (so I say; however, I first thought: “Nothing”).1 – We celebrate at this profession of Sr. Isabel and at the jubilee professions what we are in our innermost self, what constitutes our dignity.
I am nothing anymore. That is what old people say. And to young people it is said: You will amount to nothing. Or: No future.
Nothing is?! If I have the feeling that I am good for nothing anymore, then it does good when I am praised. This applies to children, who otherwise do not grow, this applies to a successful job, also to good food; men also like to hear it. Especially young people grow when they are thought of positively. A nagging age, dissatisfied with everything, produces sick people. Without praise, the human being becomes sick. One cannot be a human being in the long term, right and healthy, if one cannot praise oneself and is not praised. Giving and receiving belong together there.
1 Peter Handke, Am Felsfenster morgens (and other local times 1982 – 1987), Berlin 2019, 78. – I owe these notes to Erich Ortner.
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (Lk 12:34). Francis of Assisi writes in the ‘Earlier Rule’ from the years 1210–1221: “The Rule and Life of these Brothers is this: … to live and to follow the teaching and the track of our Lord Jesus Christ. He says: If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you will have a treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” In renouncing care, it is a matter of the “first” of the Kingdom of God, of the question of God: God or idol. “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth.” (Mt 6:19) – Francis of Assisi wishes to follow the poor and naked Christ in poverty and nakedness. In a beggar’s existence without anything of one’s own (sine proprio), Francis knows himself to be intimately close and exposed in everything, dependent on God and on neighbors, and gifted by them. Francis knows the obligation to work, but without a claim to a (just) wage. He lives from the joy of receiving and of giving away. The goal of this poverty as total liberation for God is conformity with the beloved Christ. In the vocation to the Order, it is radically a matter of the question of God. God alone is the fulfillment of human longing. And he is the ground of human freedom. From God, the human being becomes free from all dependencies, addictions, and fixations. The center of the Franciscan Sisters is the love for Christ and the consequent following of Jesus.
Let us cultivate relationships!
Fraternity has a good ring to it. One associates with it communication on equal terms, relationships free from domination, perhaps also the separation from the parents, the overcoming of a gradient between generations, freedom and not obedience. Of course, reality looks different from the idea. Holy Scripture knows, besides brotherly love, also sibling rivalry, egoism, desire, and greed: Cain and Abel, Jacob and Esau, Joseph and his brothers, the prodigal son and his brother (Lk 15). It is also known that Romulus kills his brother Remus. Between Cain and Abel, it is the hatred toward the brother, the envy of his advantage, and the anger over the disadvantage.
Pope Francis speaks, in the wake of Francis of Assisi, in his encyclical “Laudato si” 2 of a universal community and fraternity. Indifference or cruelty toward the other creatures of this world reflects much of how we treat other human beings. Any cruelty toward any creature “contradicts the dignity of the human person.” 3 Everything is interconnected, and all human beings are, as brothers and sisters, together on a wonderful pilgrimage, interwoven with one another by the love that God has for each of his creatures and which also unites us in tender love with “Brother Sun,” “Sister Moon,” Brother River, and Mother Earth.” (No. 92) “In a time that tends toward acceleration and fragmentation, the human body continues to require care and recognition through hands capable of tenderness, through attentive people, and through friendly words. The digital culture multiplies

connections and offers new possibilities for encounter; nevertheless, the human heart preserves an indispensable need for closeness. I invite you to hold fast to places and times where physical presence matters: at the shared table, in the Christian community that gathers, in visiting lonely people, and in serving the poor.” (Leo XIV, MH 239) Our real, existing families and communities are not an idealistic paradise. In concrete reality, there are disturbed, destructive, and destroyed relationships, disabilities, burdens, offenses, and power dynamics in our interactions. The neurotic distortions and disabilities are, for Paul, material of relationship and community.
He boasts of his weaknesses (2 Cor 12:9; 1 Cor 1:18–31). It would be precisely the challenge to deal relationally with the light and shadow sides, with strengths and deficits, with gifts and disabilities, with the roses and neuroses.
Blessing and Prayer Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906–1945): “The response of the righteous to the sufferings that the world inflicts upon him is: to bless. That was God’s response to the world, which He nailed to the cross in Christ:
Blessing. God does not repay evil with evil, and neither should the righteous. Not to judge, not to rebuke, but to bless. The world would have no hope if this were not so. From the blessing of God and of the righteous the world lives and has a future. To bless means to lay one’s hand upon something and to say: You belong to God, despite everything. So do we with the world that inflicts such suffering upon us. ... We have received God’s blessing in happiness and in suffering. But whoever has been blessed himself can no longer do otherwise than pass on this blessing; indeed, he must be a blessing where he is. Only from the impossible can the world be renewed; this impossible is the blessing of God.”4
Conclusion “Who is not illuminated by the splendor of created things is blind; who is not awakened by this loud calling of nature is deaf; who, impressed by these wonders of nature, does not praise God is mute; who is not directed by these signals of the world to the Creator is foolish. Therefore, open your eyes, turn your spiritual ear to them, loose your tongue, and open your heart, so that you may discover, hear, praise, and love your God in all creatures..., so that the whole earth does not rise up accusingly against you!” (Bonaventure)5 – Thank you for your witness as religious sisters, that God Himself is the center of human existence. You have left many traces of love, sympathy, and goodwill.
I thank you, the Franciscan sisters, for the traces of fraternity, respect, and peace. Through you, the canticle of praise, the Canticle of the Sun of Francis of Assisi, has become alive.

Usw.
Was kosten bzw. bringen die verschiedenen Bereiche?
Was bin ich in meinem innersten Inneren?
So sagen Alte. Oder: No future.
Nix is?!
