Community · main message Hope · carrying Responsibility · carrying

One can find strength and hope even in difficult situations such as illness or high pressure, if one does not define oneself solely through one thing and values the community around them.

I believe we simply have a wonderful world in women's football, where all people are welcome, where little girls and boys come to the stadiums with their parents and can cheer on their role models, and where good football is also played.

The text is a podcast episode of the Diocese of Münster, in which football goalkeeper Mala Grohs is a guest. She tells of her path into competitive sport, her Catholic upbringing, and her cancer diagnosis a year and a half ago. Grohs describes how she has learned to deal with pressure and nervousness without judging herself too harshly. She emphasizes the importance of community, both in the team and in the family and in the church environment. The text connects athletic performance with personal experiences of illness and recovery. The core message is that one should not identify oneself solely through one thing and that one can find hope and strength even in difficult situations. The present-day relevance lies in the current sporting situation and the personal life story of the host.

Most of the time, when it was a goalkeeper’s error, you can see that it then becomes a great burden, one that you can also carry with you. You really have to work hard on not being so hard on yourself. I actually like it when that nervousness rises, because I have also experienced that it simply makes me better, sharper, and more alert, and therefore I simply do not have such feelings of fear about it. I believe that we simply have a wonderful world in women’s football, where all people are welcome, where little girls and boys come to the stadiums with their parents and can cheer on their role models, and where good football is also played. Welcome to a new episode of Kannste Glauben, the podcast of the Diocese of Münster. I am Angristin Lardermann, glad that you are with us. Today we have a woman as a guest, whom many probably first associate with football. Malagros is the goalkeeper for FC Bayern and has already stood in goal for the German women’s national team. And she has now achieved the Double-Perfect with her team. The FC Bayern women have become German champions for the fourth time in a row and are now also DFB Cup winners. At the same time, a great chapter is also ending in these days, because after seven years, Malad is leaving FC Bayern. Malad originally comes from Münster, from a, I would say, Catholic-influenced environment. Her mother works for the diocese, Malad herself was an altar server, and she also attended a church-affiliated school. Today she is 24 years old and lives in the world of professional sports. But she is also studying mechanical engineering, and she had to learn how quickly nothing is taken for granted even in high-performance sports. Because a year and a half ago, she received a cancer diagnosis and then fought her way back onto the football pitch step by step. I am now speaking with her about team spirit and responsibility, about pressure, and the question of how one copes with situations that one suddenly can no longer control. And also about what sustains people when life throws them off track. Malad, welcome, glad that you are here. Yes, thank you for the invitation. Malad, so just a few days ago, you were able to celebrate the championship title with your team for the fifth time, and that was also your last home game with FC Bayern. I can only, I can only imagine how hectic and turbulent the last few days were. Perhaps you could say what was going on inside you in the last few days? It was certainly a very special day, and it was also such that the days before were characterized by the fact that I naturally roughly knew what was coming for me with such a last home game day in a season with the handover of the trophy. That is actually always a really nice day. I also told my family afterwards, man, somehow the sun always seems to shine when this day comes. And it is somehow always a really nice day with the home game. So far I have also had the luck that we have always won these games. So also on the weekend. Yes, it is simply a nice conclusion. The families are there, the fans are also really in a good mood. And therefore I looked forward to it very much and was of course also a little nervous, because I also did not really know how my emotional state would look in that moment. And I believe that I managed it quite well, that I could really enjoy it. Yes, it is probably always mixed feelings. But if the setting is right, the sun shines, you win the game, the family and friends are there, that sounds very fitting. When people hear your name, then many, I believe, first think of football. That is also with football, especially here in Münster, where you come from. But if you had to describe yourself, there is more to it. So What are you trying to say? What makes Malakroos who she is? Yes, it is always a difficult question to put it on point. But I believe that my versatility, together with this goal-orientation that has also brought me into elite sport and perhaps also to where I am standing now, is what defines me. But yes, I simply try, and this is very important to me, not to identify myself solely through this one thing. And that there are always several things in my life that are simply important to me and that I can also focus on. Because yes, I am truly of the opinion that it is not healthy if one focuses only on one thing. Yes, and therefore, I simply like being on the go, I also like being present at the various events that take place around. I like exploring the city in which I then live, like Munich now. I love coming home, meeting the homeland and old acquaintances and faces again, I also feel very at home there. And that is, I have been focused, concentrated. I would describe you, if one perceives you from the outside, as rather the quieter type. Would you say that in professional sport it is sometimes a disadvantage to belong to the quieter characters? Or is it as a professional somehow so that one must be a kind of, I’ll call it now, show-off? I believe, of course, one must be able to perform under pressure. Or that is simply a very large share, because one must, so one must simply love this pressure a bit and be comfortable dealing with it. I like it when this nervousness rises, because I have also experienced that it simply makes me better and sharper and more awake, and therefore I simply do not have these feelings of fear about it. I believe, but that is something different from this quieter personality that you describe, and I would also see it that way. So I see it for myself as an advantage, or I know, when I am myself and can confidently be with who I am as a person. Then I am at my best and then I can perform best. And I have really tried over the years to take in and implement these tips and hints that one should perhaps, so also coaches who have demanded, is such a show-off, a bit louder verbally present, perhaps also more aggressive in terms of statements, so always, always separate. But one simply noticed, that is me. And then I am not on the field as I imagine myself, but I am simply rather a focused, mentally very present player. And I also speak clearly with my teammates on the field, but of course very calmly. You grew up in Münster, come from here, this is your home in a family in which I would now say, church and faith were probably somehow a matter of course. Maybe we can take a look at how this was concretely in your home, on this topic? So, matter of course is, I believe, a good word. I would say, also only in hindsight does a lot become noticeable that perhaps also shaped our family and is somehow shaped by faith, possibly something where I always thought, that is just how it is, but in other families it is not so. Exactly, with my mom, who while I was growing up, yes, mainly worked as a pastoral referent in the parish, we were afterwards, as before, very rooted and every, were every Sunday in the family service. My brother and I, we were in the altar servers. In the leadership group there, the leadership group is still our closest circle of friends, in which we simply feel at home. So it is simply lived normality somehow, and especially the colleagues around Mom’s, with whom we of course also grew up and are also Friends of the family were involved. I believe you also attended a denominational school, the Marien-Schule, a girls' gymnasium, and you were also part of the team here at the cathedral that streamed services to the internet, right? Yes, that's correct. I actually didn't do that for very long, as it simply rarely worked out schedule-wise, unfortunately. But I did get involved and streamed a few services, exactly. And the Marien-Schule was also my home. Essentially, there was already a very different, large space for you early on, namely football. Why the position of goalkeeper? I mean, why does one voluntarily stand in goal? I think many people rather avoid responsibility, but I obviously found it attractive in some way. So what was the reason, how did you come to this position? Well, I had to get used to the position a bit. At first, I simply tried it out, because it was somewhat my ticket into the team for my brother; he was also the goalkeeper, and I said I could do it. And then I found it really cool, and it worked out well. And that was somewhat my entry point. In the years that followed, I also spent a lot of time on the pitch, in various positions, and I always enjoyed being in goal. I also found it much more boring. Boring. Yes, at the beginning I did have some respect for it. I had to come to terms with carrying this responsibility. Yes, but the selection coaches then placed me in goal. It then became clear that if I wanted to continue here, that was somewhat my path, and I then played for a year in the U17 Bundesliga with the girls' team of VfL Bochum in the Bundesliga. And that was somewhat the year in which I simply, I was the captain and, yes, I believe I played a very good season as a footballer, and I somewhat realized how cool it can be in goal. Also holding onto a win and what one can do there, and how one can fill the position quite well, and I somewhat lost my respect and my fear, which I think was very important, otherwise I don't know if I would have done it for much longer and if I would have always felt more comfortable. And then, fortunately, specific goalkeeper training eventually began. I hadn't done much of that in youth. And there I could really get into these extra things that come with the position. And that gives me a lot of pleasure now, and it makes me very happy where I am. It is, of course, really a position that forgives no mistakes at all. At least you see directly if you make some kind of mistake. But that is indeed a special position within a team. Yes, absolutely. Of course, with the mistakes, that is the most obvious thing, even for a layman. Exactly. So you usually see if it was a goalkeeper error and can thus directly attribute those conceded goals to one person, and that is already a great burden one has to carry. One really has to work hard on not being too hard on oneself. That is the most important point for me. Because of course, eventually the media get involved, and many people then assume or say something about it and complain about it. But for me, it is rather about not beating myself up over it or feeling ashamed. They are mistakes, because I actually know that I didn't do them on purpose. But this little detail, that is the moment, one has to get it right, because some can really be nerve-racking. Yes. You naturally become part of a team, but what becomes to say, how do you actually notice that a squad has become a team? I think it’s those little moments, when you manage to constantly be in communication as a team, when no one just goes through their actions on the pitch for themselves. And you always notice it when there is a lot of eye contact, for example, in the big stadiums, you can hardly talk anymore. This much eye contact, that when someone ends up on the ground, there is always someone from your own team to help that person up. And you think that things just happen, but that’s not the case; rather, it is really work that you put in. And I truly believe that it happens when you are very attentive to your teammates around you and then at some point no longer just work through your tasks for yourself, but do it together. It is now very much thought of in terms of the pitch, but it applies just as much to everything around the pitch and in the training room. If you simply have the feeling that you look left and right and no longer only at yourself. So, the keyword is communication, I find that totally fascinating. And what do you want to say, are there learnings for people also outside of sports from such a collaboration within the squad? So, what can one take away? What experiences you have in a squad? What can one take from that, how important it is to be a team? Yes, I think a lot. So, probably it is still very much more normal for us and we sometimes cannot really see the specialness in it, because we are also very used to it. But how we do it, then one already feels in which moment a team is fully present and also productive and truly works on common things together, and when that is not quite right and when the connection is missing. Yes, I think in sports, we can truly be role models. Yes, definitely. I also always think that when something goes so well, you can always see quite clearly that success is not created by one person alone, but that everyone somehow contributed to it, and that not everyone has to shine all the time, but that it is just a team matter and that then together, when each person does their part, it somehow comes about. Totally, but it is also, so I actually think the most important thing is, if you really do not want to lose anyone, that you must not make everyone feel seen. It simply cannot be done any other way and it does not just happen. And there, the paths are also really demanding for everyone and yes, we must then also carry it together. Because I know that too, because I am perhaps also a personality who really always wants to put the team very much in the foreground. And if I now experience a personal setback, then it is also important to me that I do not bring that into the squad. That is a skill, I believe, that not everyone has and that is also praised. But sometimes, as one of these players, you no longer really want to hear that. I can no longer bear to hear it when someone tells me, that is kind of you to do that for the team, but then it is also about a little bit of this frustration that perhaps one half of the team feels, not being on the pitch and not just talking it away, but rather, everyone must really feel seen and yes, that is not so easy at all. Keyword personal setback, but not in the sporting sense, but in your personal area, right in the middle of the squad’s preparation, when in 2024 you suddenly went public with a diagnosis that naturally shocked you, the team, but also your fans quite a bit. Would you like to tell me how that was for you back then? Of course, it was a shock. So, primarily a Shock, because I was actually feeling well at the time, and that is, with a diagnosis like that, which comes out of nowhere but is life-threatening and somehow demanding, I think it’s no wonder and also very normal. I tried a bit to finish up the usual things. And that worked very well for me, and simply step by step to work through the individual things that were ahead of me, and at the same time, what was important to me was to be transparent about it, and not just somehow disappear from the scene, but it was also important to me that people know, that I can make a clear statement. So, telling it really only did me good. At such a young age, as you were, what happens to a person who then suddenly is no longer a performer, but suddenly also simply a patient in a clinic. You suddenly feel very grounded in reality. On the other hand, I really succeeded in handing over the responsibility for it. The thing is, you can do nothing about it. And it is simply such a contrast to the other side, where I am exposed as an athlete, that I naturally have to, may, and should watch every mistake again on my video, and one is confronted so strongly with what performances one has delivered. And in this case, I really, truly, with full conviction, could say, I can’t do anything about it, and that’s just how it is, and I also don’t have to solve the problem, but someone else has to do it, someone who knows what they’re doing. And I could find quite a lot of freedom in that, and I succeeded well in trusting the people around me. And it was okay. So, I think afterwards I realized how much effort it also cost. And it didn’t just happen easily, but that this whole positive energy that one tries to channel also simply comes from somewhere, but in this case, I was really okay with being a patient. It took a lot off my shoulders. It also has a lot to do with trust. As you already say, you have to trust the doctors, because you can’t somehow control it yourself. What gave you, in this time, perhaps also hope? So, support and hope, what does that mean for you today? So, I have a lot of inner conviction that I, and also a lot of trust that first of all, everyone there naturally takes the best possible care of me. And I naturally ended up with the best people, and I know, I can rely on my family, and yes, I am simply held. I feel 100 percent comfortable and safe there, regardless of my condition, and this trust, it is within me. It is certainly a strong imprint over my entire childhood and my life so far, a lot of work from my parents, a lot of positive work from everyone around us, whether it’s also the grandparents, friends, and from the family. And yes, I can also really, really draw on a lot of capital. Yes, that probably makes itself quite noticeable in such a situation. So, you first notice that, how one is imprinted, what then is important. Did any questions arise to you during that time, which perhaps had no place before, because you also simply had a super full daily routine, somehow a full life. So, did any questions arise about, so, questions or life in general, also about spirituality or faith or something like that. Did anything like that become important to you in that time? Not specifically, I would say. So, I think it was really rather this of falling back on my familiar routines in that moment. I realized afterwards, when I was actually physically completely fit again and on the pitch, and I noticed that this, that the mental exhaustion, I have also spoken about how the soul needs to heal after such an oath, that perhaps in this time, in which I felt this very strongly, I simply spent a bit more time there, reflecting on it. It made me feel a bit lost as well, I wanted to do quite a lot at the same time, so somehow get fit, recover, prepare, ideally finish my studies in the oath semester. Because I, all of a sudden, and there I just occupied myself a bit more with my inner world and tried to bring some order into it. But I believe that overall I got through it very well. Perhaps back to sports, to football. You can see with many female and male athletes how important rituals are. So some, I don't know, pray, some put on their left shoe first or their right shoe. Do you also have such rituals? Do you have them in your life as an athlete as well? I would say small things. I actually try to keep myself very free from them, but rather take the path, in terms of my performance, of making it clear to myself that it really depends on the preparation before that day and event, what I can perform today, and not on one or the other little thing. But I of course want, these routines are already important and they also provide structure. And if I have the opportunity, if it is a home game, then I eat my favorite cake before the game, which is also simply delicious. It also reminds me somehow of being at home. And I already enjoyed that. But for me, the rituals that are important are more things like coming home for Christmas. So that is simply very important to me. I would also never want to take a vacation during that time, but that is something that gives us such an anchor, also throughout the year, which flies by so quickly. They are small things that I do in my homeland. I also prefer to be there for Easter, for example on Easter night. If it somehow works out, unfortunately it has never worked out in recent years, but yes, rather these points that also simply come from my youth from home, which also take me out of a football everyday and on which I simply place a lot of value. What do you think, why do people need rituals? So why do they calm us so much? I do not exclude myself from that. So I believe that every human being has such rituals. I believe it is simply security and that one today simply in this wild world no longer, so sometime

Also was willst du sagen? Was macht Malakroos aus? Also warum stellt man sich freiwillig ins Tor? Also was kann man da mitnehmen?
