The German media landscape has systematically obscured the victims of October 7, particularly German victims, while personal remembrance and the togetherness of the community represent the central strength in coping with the loss.
My only explanation, really, is that it was not intended for a German sense of being affected to come too much into focus, at least from the media, which I later had to learn are not very pro-Israel
The text is an interview with Sonja Bohl-Dencker, who lost her daughter Caroline on October 7, 2023, at Kibbutz Nir Oz. The mother describes Caroline as an empathetic, cheerful person who smiled at people regardless of their origin or religion. She recounts the painful course of the day, during which she first received reassuring messages before contact was lost. Bohl-Dencker criticizes the German media landscape, particularly public broadcasters, for one-sided reporting and the obscuring of German victims. As a sign of remembrance and community, a bench made from a tree trunk was erected in the home village, which became a place of mourning and remembrance. The mother emphasizes the importance of remembrance and of being together in grief.

My daughter was a carefree, cheerful, and empathetic young woman, and I would rather speak of this: look at what this woman stood for back then, be empathetic with one another, look at people. Hello to a new episode of the Orthodoxy Podcast for the undecided, with me, very eleven. Today I have a very emotional conversation ahead of me, and I will be speaking with Sonja Buldenka, who lost her daughter Caroline on October 7, 2023, when she was murdered in Kibbutz Nir Oz by Hamas terrorists. Yes, dear Sonja, first of all, thank you for being willing to speak with me here. I can imagine that every single interview is difficult for you, and therefore I thank you all the more for coming to the community to speak with me. Thank you very much. You lost your daughter Caroline, who was murdered on October 7 by Hamas terrorists in Kibbutz Nir Oz. What would you most like to talk about when you think of your daughter? Well, she was a little ray of sunshine, always laughed, and of course at home you also hear some bad moods, and the teenage years are classically something parents who have or had teenagers certainly know, where one doesn’t always laugh, but she was fundamentally a very positively disposed person. It did not interest her whether someone was Black or white, what religion they had, what skin color, as I said, what was decisive was the heart of people and whether she could connect with them. She loved making people laugh, even wild, strange people, and she repeatedly reported that people then smiled back. And yes, and she loved to conjure a smile into the faces of people, of wild, strange people. And that is how she was. And I noticed this again very clearly when I read all the condolence cards, where everyone else also confirmed that she was a simple ray of sunshine. Others wrote that the sun rose when she entered a room. And that is how it was. She always smiled, laughed. And these blonde hair, this beautiful young woman, it was simply. Yes, and we had a very close relationship. That is personally the most difficult thing for me and what I miss most, that we regularly had contact, almost every day, even though she had later lived in Berlin for her studies, and she regularly came home and liked being at home and enjoyed enjoying the quiet after city life with us in the countryside. Yes, I simply miss her incredibly. I get goosebumps when you speak about your daughter. So that I feel, since I do not know her, what kind of special person she was. Therefore, thank you for sharing that with me or with us. Your daughter, Caroline was, as already mentioned, on October 7, 2023, in Kibbutz Nir Oz. What do you remember exactly from that day? The day started very early for me. I was on vacation and we wanted to leave early. I was in Denmark and then, of course, it was not just a natural thing, but the message from Caroline came. She always messaged me, always somehow contacted me when there was a problem. So also on that morning, and she wrote: Something has happened now. That can be explained, because when I heard, saw that the kibbutz where they were was so close to the Gaza Strip, I already somehow worried, although I knew nothing about Israel. But somehow the Gaza Strip sounded so completely foreign to me. One must clearly say that at the time, at least, it seemed somehow strange. And then she even called me once and then wrote, told me, I think I have to know my Mami. That is how she always called me. Once
to calm down. Here, everything is fine and everything is safe. And yes, and then this message came in that morning. Something had happened after all. I didn’t even know that she was still at the kibbutz, because they had actually planned to drive on the 6th, the night of the bright wife, or rather on the 7th, the flight was scheduled, and they had changed it at short notice, so that on that morning they were still at the kibbutz. And then we just wrote back and forth via WhatsApp. They, of course, didn’t know anything either, like hardly anyone did, at least among the civilian population who had to witness this horror, they didn’t know what was going on and were then in the safe room, and we tried to pack in the meantime, because we also had to leave, and we were then in the car, and then suddenly this message from her came in, saying that she loves me everywhere and thanks me for everything, and that was already so, for God’s sake. That surely wasn’t a farewell message. But one doesn’t readily give up hope. She had written that she is in the bunker. She referred to it as a bunker. And then I thought, well, maybe no network, no electricity, no whatever. But then I had no further contact with her, and then we drove back from Denmark during that time. It also takes about four hours. And yes, and after that I just constantly sat on the phone, trying to reach the Foreign Office. The embassy in Tel Aviv, yes, I did reach them, but some kind of, I don’t know, phones, people who had no idea. No one was organized who might perhaps be able to provide more information. Only a callback was offered or promised. But nothing happened. And then one tried to contact the family. And yes, that was October 7th. But I still somehow tried not to give up hope that same day. And the next day, contact was established, my daughter, two half-sisters from her father’s first marriage. The older one, together with her husband, located the family of Danny, with whom she had been there. And they had contacts to Israel. Yes, and then they also had contact to Nea Ostereck, because Danny is a dual Israeli-British citizen, so part of the family is in Israel and part in England. And and they know, they also know how to establish contact with Nea Ostereck. They also had contact with Danny’s good friend, and the army only arrived in Nea Ostereck that night, actually. And then they went through the place again and then found the bodies of Danny and Karolin and reported that already on Sunday evening, so not officially, but rather through our private contacts. I have to swallow hard for a moment there. What did you particularly miss in Germany after October 7th? How do you explain, above all, that in Germany, I would say, hardly or not at all was spoken about the fate of your daughter, although she was the only German tourist who was murdered that day? Yes. Well, I have often thought about that, my only explanation is actually that it was not desired that German concern would come too much into focus, at least from the media, from whom I later had to learn that they are not very pro-Israel, including the media I did not expect that from, like the public broadcasters, so especially the Tagesschau and which in my view have the mandate to simply report objectively and from both sides and not one-sidedly and and also not to present their own opinions without explicitly labeling them as commentary. Yes. There are, of course, also media that, thank God, see it differently, but because there is little of that, that at least one
I heard from Karolin, perhaps it didn’t reach their ears either; I don’t know, I never looked into it more closely. But the major media outlets, which are on the ground and, in my view, should have known—and certainly did know—didn’t want to report on it. That’s my assumption. So it’s only a guess, but I have no other explanation, because, well, whenever major events or shocking incidents occur, German concern is always mentioned to some extent. So, did any Germans die or not? Now, before we turn to the general reaction in Germany, I’d like to return to your daughter. In your home village, a bench was erected as a memorial. First of all, how did that come about, and what significance does this bench hold? Well, it came about because Karolin, in her generation, directly in her class, her cohort, had mostly boys in our village, and they had a very good relationship. They had been together since kindergarten, they were out and about, they played at first, and then they became close friends. In particular, there were three boys who had been in Utasen for a longer time, and a young man who joined them later, whose grandfather lived in the village and who then also ended up there. And yes, those four were deeply affected. It’s also the case that it’s not only we who are affected; especially the close friends are deeply affected—many people are affected. But in our area, of course, everyone or many people learned about it. But the close friends are, of course, even more deeply affected, and some of them had real, significant problems processing it at all, because, who, as a young person, has to endure losing a good friend or a good female friend in such a way? There are only very few such cases, and in every instance in Germany, it is rather unusual. And yes, those four decided that they wanted to build a bench. They wanted to do something, and then they chose this bench. Something handmade, and they also knew that Karolin would have liked it. It is a very cozy, natural bench. They simply took a tree trunk and cut it across, and they deliberately chose a very rustic trunk, because they knew that Karolin would have loved it. Although she loved Berlin, she was, in the end, still somewhat of a country girl. And yes, that was just her way of processing it, spending the day together in Karolin’s memory, because it certainly took at least a day, and then they planted a tree, an apple tree next to it, and yes, I found that totally moving and very touching. And we then consecrated it together when they were all there. They are, after all, partly studying elsewhere, and yes, it has very, very reassured me, and I found it very beautiful. At first, I thought about walking past it once, because it’s on the route where I walk with our dog, and I often pass by, but now it has also become a beautiful place of remembrance for me. And the boys often sit on it around Christmas, because they meet there, and even though it’s cold, with a fire basket, they remember her and talk about her. So it has now become a special place. What does remembrance mean to you personally? What does it mean for you? Well, that’s a good, good question. Especially since I am now experiencing two kinds of remembrance. The Israelis, or Jewish people—I don’t know, yes, Jewish people in Germany also have a completely different culture of remembrance than the Germans. We recently held a small reading concert
held. A reminder about Caroline, which appeared in the newspaper two and a half years after her death, still reminds the family of their daughter. Yes, so perhaps the journalist who wrote it didn’t think much of it, but in Germany there is also a bit of this opinion. Well, so with a child it might be a different matter, but who knows? At the latest with a husband, a wife, the one who loses them. Yes, after a year it must also be okay at some point. And I even hear this from parents who have lost their child, perhaps not after a year, but after a few years it must be okay. I do not believe, at least according to my experience with other people, that it ever becomes okay when one loses one’s child. And with the Jewish fellow citizens and in Israel I experience it differently. There, even after 40 years, one still remembers one’s sister. And there is a special memorial day, which is truly observed and not according to the motto that after ten years it is now okay with that. So that, and I find that very, I find that very beautiful, and I feel much more at home there, because I do not believe that I will not want to commemorate my daughter in ten years. It simply is, it is proper, and I find this culture, this culture of remembrance, very beautiful, as I now experience it from the Jewish fellow citizens. You just mentioned it. You had, and one must say, that is really interesting. You had nothing to do with Jewish life and with Israel before October 7, and then suddenly through this, through this, through this terrible October 7, you were thrown into it, so to speak. What frightens you most in the handling of Jewish life, of Israel since October 7, right here in Germany? The worst is the way many Germans deal with October 7 and thereby also project a hatred, as if there were a kind of collective guilt of all Jews for what happens in Israel, in the Middle East, apart from the fact that I also evaluate what happens there. But even if one would evaluate it that way, and even if it were the case that Israel commits genocide there and whatever else is being accused of them, there is no collective guilt, and I could drive out of my mind that this is being done here, that antisemitism is rising here, and it makes my life fundamentally more difficult, because I cannot understand it. I have said from my grief that I first want to know why it happened like that and wanted to know the backgrounds, that was actually the reason why I then engaged more closely with it, and what I have learned and had to learn makes me speechless, well, perhaps for a while, but now I want to do something. I also feel obligated, that is nonsense. I think it is a must for every German citizen, and I am ashamed of every German citizen who sees it differently. Has your view of the world changed overall as a result of what you have experienced here in Germany since September? I cannot say that so spontaneously right now. It is just that my focus has changed very much. What has already changed is that I can no longer follow at all the little things that people grumble about, where I say, your child is perhaps alive, you are perhaps healthy, do you perhaps have other worries? So I am then a bit sarcastic sometimes. For example, the fuel prices. For example, the fuel prices, most beautifully the butter prices. And above all still with people. I can understand it with people, with those for whom it is a matter of existence. So no idea, one is told, those who really consume a lot of fuel,
not earn much. Perhaps with some farmers or freight forwarders, or whatever, with small freight forwarders who are truly on the brink of ruin. I cannot judge that. If that were the case, it is, of course, understandable. But I know that many complain while going on vacation three times and still driving their motorhome on holiday despite fuel prices. And there I have zero understanding. That is simply, I can only shake my head and say, as I said, do you have no other worries? And we are one, I must clarify once more, it just occurs to me, that I always return to these things. I am ashamed of the Germans. That is always the case. It was about the Jewish fellow citizens, who are, of course, also German. So for the non-Jewish German fellow citizens, I am ashamed in that area I mentioned earlier. Let me say, there have been, or there were since October 7, 2023, so many different reactions. But you are one, you are the mother of a murdered young lady. You are therefore right in the middle of it. No. There are so many reactions from people who think they have understood the world, who have understood the Easter flight, who have understood Israel. But they know nothing. To put it plainly, they know absolutely nothing. Therefore, you, as someone who is truly in the middle of it, who was, still is, how do you experience the general reaction to that day, to everything that has happened since? Yes, that makes me come out of my skin again. Just now these so-called, whom I particularly cannot understand, the so-called armchair intellectuals, "bio-Germans" in quotation marks, who now think they must somehow express themselves on everything and everything, and with their half-knowledge or zero knowledge somehow express themselves, especially outwardly. I would grant everyone their opinion. But if one expresses oneself in public, whether via social media or in any interviews on television in the media, then one must have dealt with such a statement like "Israel is committing genocide." And one must have examined it a bit more deeply. And not just rely on the so-called showcase Jews, showcase Israelis, whatever. Of course, one can also find someone in Israel who claims that Israel is committing genocide. There is now a nice film by the United Nations where they interviewed this showcase Israeli professor, who now says Israel is committing genocide. That exists, but that is not enough; rather, one must also look beyond one's own horizon and deal with it, and only then can one put on a bold front. And that is what I criticize most about the loudmouths, above all. I am jumping a bit around with my questions here, but I think it all belongs together. Therefore, my next question. What helps you in dealing with grief? Because I am asking this question at this point because I find that, precisely the reaction after October 7, essentially makes your grief, which is absolutely understandable, more difficult. But when so much hatred also rains down on you, with the motto, your daughter is to blame herself for being in Israel, such things certainly exist. Therefore, I can only imagine, and I can only truly sense it. I must also say this very clearly, very clearly, that because of that, the grief becomes much heavier than it already is. Yes, that is exhausting. So I wanted, I wanted. I could, of course, have said, I am now rotting at home and sitting on the sofa staring into space almost every day. That is just not who I am. And I cry little anyway. My grief, it feels completely different and is just inside me and you do not see it on me. But it is
there. And if my daughter had died in the traffic accident, I would perhaps, I would of course perhaps also have wanted to know the course of the traffic accident. But that is of course not so complex either. I wanted to know what happened, and what I then found out actually makes the matter even worse. Because I naturally still empathize with the Jewish people and the Israelis I know. And they are, on the one hand, totally warm-hearted, and it is also really good that I was accepted into such a community and truly and really included so warmly in this community. On the other hand, I know what they have gone through and perhaps feel especially with them for that very reason. And yes, and that is an additional burden. And all of this only because of people who, from my point of view, are totally nonsensical. Truly people where, upon questioning, one asks where the intellect and the empathy and the humanity remain. And that makes me lose my temper from time to time. What do you want to convey to people? I mean, you give many interviews and you also appear, if I may say so, in the context of lectures. What do you want to leave with people here in Germany? What is your intention when you speak with people? Well, my intention is above all, please take a look. My daughter was a privileged, cheerful, empathic young woman, and I would like much more of these. Take a cue from this woman and be empathetic with each other, look at people and get to know them. That is, for example, also important from my point of view, that when you get to know someone or when you engage with each other and talk with each other, many prejudices can also be dismantled. And this shouting around without sense and reason, just because one takes in certain sentences, claims, and assumes them to be true, we will not get anywhere, therefore more empathy, more humanity and more togetherness and regardless of which religion and which political color. To conclude, I have been asking the following question repeatedly to my podcast guests since September. I will say, our society is sliding into the extremes, both left and right, especially since September, extremely so. What still gives you hope for a perhaps generally better future? Is there anything at all that gives you hope in the current situation? Yes, well, for me personally not, because I will always, from my point of view, remain in this situation where I grieve for my daughter. But I am only a tiny grain of

Da muss man ganz klar sagen damals jedenfalls irgendwie merkwürdig an. Jetzt ist doch was passiert. Oktober vermisst? Was bedeutet Erinnerung dir persönlich? Oktober 23 so viele verschiedene Reaktionen. Du bist dadurch also mittendrin.
